Tonight: Son Of The Sun

Beloved but dearly departed Buffalo band Son Of The Sun is getting back together for one night only tonight at Buffalo Iron Works, and they’re bringing their musical progeny with them to open the show. Zak Ward’s new band First Ward will be joined by The Soft Love featuring Jeremy Franklin and Joe Stocker and Brandon Delmont’s  A House Safe For Tigers project with Mark Constantino will be convening to show us some of the future of the local music scene before getting back together onstage to remind us of what Son Of The Sun was all about. Tickets are $10 at the door and doors are at 8pm. Almost Not There by Son of the Sun

Tonight: Speakerfire

It’s hard to believe that it’s been eight long years since Speakerfire last graced a stage in Buffalo, NY. Their distinct brand of alternative rock is stuffed full of pitch-shifted guitar noise and late-aughts emo sentiment, which made them a mainstay in the Buffalo music scene a decade ago. With support from fellow Buffalo rockers The Traditional and The Soft Love, they’ll be reliving the glory days tonight with a straight-up reunion set at the Waiting Room. Tickets for tonight’s show are $10 presale, $12 at the door. Doors are at 8pm, music starts at 9pm… It’s gonna get loud, so bring earplugs or prepare yourself for some well-deserved tinnitus.

Tonight: The Jaguar Club

Brooklyn new wavers, The Jaguar Club, are in town this evening for a show upstairs at Mr. Goodbar with DC out synth rock outfit Incredible Change and local hard rockers The Soft Love. Propelled by soaring keyboards and even more soaring vocals, The Jaguar Club is straight up English New Wave with a rusted out sensibility that’s sure to please, while the spaced out synths and electronic distortions of Incredible Change will be sonic champagne in your ears. The dark, heavy duty post rock jams of headliners The Soft Love however are ideal for headbanging. The show starts at 9pm and $5 gets you in.

Tonight: M.A.G.S. w/ the Soft Love

While Elliot Douglas has been part of the Buffalo music scene for quite awhile, but it wasn’t till his formation with Adam Lilley and Andy Wesner as M.A.G.S. that it seemed as if everything came into place. The trio finds itself in a middle ground between garage rock and post-punk but with hooks to rival any major pop act. This is a band that can be absolutely blistering live while still delivering sugary sweet singles. Tonight, the band continues to ride the wave of momentum its been on since the release of the Cellophane EP earlier this year. Joining them will be the Soft Love, the much-buzzed new kids on the block who’s debut single “ALL OF IT” introduced the world to their particular gritty and aggressive blues rock sound. The band has gained a glowing reputation for its live shows at local clubs and this year’s Herd Fest. This stellar[...]

Quiet Country Audio

For the second year in a row, our buddies over at Quiet Country Audio have curated a wonderful showcase for our Herd Fest festivities… They have handpicked a collection of acts that have worked in or recorded with QCA. Tonight’s show will feature the garage-pop of MAGS and their close, albeit hardcore-influenced buddies in The Slums. Rounding out the evening are the grungemen in The Soft Love, the alt-rockers The Naturalists, and American Low. Just like the rest of Herd Fest, entrance is free with an official Herd Fest wristband. Otherwise, DBGB’s will be collecting a reasonable $5 for your entrance fee. Tonight’s showcase starts at 10:00pm. See you on Allen.

Tonight: The Demos

If a crowded Canalside isn’t your scene tonight, then stick to Allen St for a weekend pre-game bill made up of a trio of WNY rock acts. With a Genesee Live session on the way, in addition to a new EP set to drop sometime this summer, now is as good of a time as any to catch Rochester power pop act, The Demos, as the band is set to visit Nietzsche’s later on this evening. The band has been making a habit of visiting Buffalo lately, but with some new material under its belt ready to be road tested, you might as well start digging through your couch for $3 in change now to cover tonight’s door. Joining The Demos this evening will be The Soft Love and The Naturalists, two acts that will be a part of Quiet Country Audio’s Herd Fest showcase in a couple weeks at[...]

The Soft Love Drops Debut Track “ALL OF IT”

Over the last couple months, the Soft Love has been making the rounds around Buffalo clubs, with each band mate dipping their toes back into the live scene after a couple prolonged absences. Made up of former members of the Thermidors, Fairweathers, and Son of the Sun, the four piece released its debut single, “ALL OF IT,” early last night. Recorded with go to Buffalo producer Jay Zubricky of GCR, and polished off over at Paul Besch’s Quiet Country Audio in Alden, “ALL OF IT” is a brash rocker that recalls acts like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Oasis, and even a less brooding/more agressive Interpol, certainly meant to be downed with a few shots of fine whiskey, or at least whatever is at arm’s length. The band can be seen live twice this weekend: tonight as part of the Tins’ Kickstarter Benefit Show at Mohawk Place and tomorrow, somewhere within[...]

Tonight: Mooses

Tonight, Fred-town four piece, Mooses. will play the Mohawk with a strong bill of local and non local bands including The Naturalists and The Soft Love from Buffalo and Thick, out of Brooklyn. The blissfully fuzzed out psychedelia of this Fredonia quartet promises to balance out the garage rock of Naturalists and Soft Love and the intense punk of Thick. It’s always a treat when these guys play Buffalo. Doors open at 8pm, music starts at 9pm. Cover is probably around $5

Tonight: The Soft Love

Don’t miss new-kids-on-the-block The Soft Love playing Nietzsche’s tonight at 9pm The young local group, which played its debut show at the same Allentown venue on Jan. 17 of this year, brings together members of the Buffalo-based rock groups Son of the Sun and the Thermidors. With The Soft Love being so young – and with next to no recorded material of theirs yet released – it’s still anyones guess what exactly they will bring to the stage tonight. But the Thermidors have a clear affinity for classic rock, blues and garage rock. Meanwhile, Son of the Sun – now defunct – were more informed by shoegaze and moody post-punk (think Interpol or Joy Division with more traditional rock vocals). Desert rockers Johnny Nobody and the garage rock trio, The Naturalists, will open the show. Nietszche’s is located at 248 Allen St. Cover is $5.

Tonight: The Soft Love

What the hell is The Soft Love? The band has no recorded material to its name, has never played a show (although that will end after tonight), and yet, at the time of this posting, has over 80 RSVPs to this evening’s event page. Well, we do know some info about the band. The four-piece is made up of members of the recently departed Son of the Sun and former Mohawk greats, The Thermidors, so the pedigree and benefit of the doubt is certainly on the band’s side. And according to member Jeremy Franklin, the quartet will be tapping into some of that darker garage sound ala Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, so he’s got me listening. You can find out what the hype is all about tonight at Nietzsche’s as The Soft Love will make its live debut supported by Rochester’s The Absolutes and DJ Lulu, so I suppose we can[...]

Guest Post: Jeremy Franklin

For our Best of 2014 coverage, we once again decided to reach out to some friends of the blog to get an idea of what made the year in music so great for them. For the next installment in the guest series, Jeremy Franklin, former member of the late Son of the Sun and current member of the Soft Love and Kurt & the Loders, submitted his year end list. The Soft Love, comprised of former members of the Thermidors and Son of the Sun, will make its live debut on January 17th at Nietzsche’s. It seems as though some of the industry shenanigans in 2104 are as noteworthy as the music itself.  As music evolves, I feel it is only fair to summarize a “year in review” as moments, in addition to concerts, songs and albums.  Let’s start with the most unfavorable and work our way to a few[...]
