Just Announced: Hooray for Earth

With Sugar City’s official grand opening weekend just around the corner on Friday, August 15th, the newly relocated DIY collective is wasting no time in locking in some great shows to lead another great Buffalo summer to its triumphant finish. On Wednesday, August 20th, the new Niagara Street home base will be hosting NYC pysch-tronic act, Hooray for Earth. The band will be on the road promoting their at-the-time newly released album, Racy, set to drop next Tuesday, July 29th. Keep an eye out for tickets prices in the very near future.

Moverealfaststop at Allen Street Hardware

This past Friday night, local DIY collective, Sugar City, took over the front and back rooms of Hardware as a part of our Herd Fest weekend. Kicking things off in the back room was Moverealfaststop, a new(er) group that features members of Cross Stitch and Lesionread. A product of the Queen City Music Lottery, the frantic three-piece helped lay an energetic groundwork for what turned out to be one of the best showcases over the long weekend. You can watch a clip from the band’s set, complete with some special guest spoken word and a gnome, below.

Herd Fest: Day 1

This past weekend, buffaBLOG threw its inaugural Herd Fest: a two day, nine showcase festival scattered around Allen Town (and just beyond). With showcases at College Street Gallery, Nietzsche’s, Duke’s, and Hardware, each fit a certain taste and scene in Buffalo. Whether you like punk, roots, emo, or indie, Friday night had something for you. Check out some of our favorite pictures from Day 1 below and head over to our FB page for the full gallery. Tonight: Herd Fest Day 1

I am not sure what more there is to say about Herd Fest tonight so I will give you the basics: 2 Days, 9 showcases, 43 acts, 1 city. We decided to go big this year for our summer party by bringing in the heavy hitters of the Buffalo music scene and work together to make something different, something special. If you missed any of our spotlights on tonight’s showcases, lets get you up to speed: Steak & Cake Records @ College Street Gallery The Good Neighborhood @ Nietzsche’s Quiet Country Audio @ Duke’s Sugar City @ Allen Street Hardware Steak & Cake kicks things off at 7pm tonight. Spolier: College Street is on the smaller side so get there early to get a spot. Music will be running all night long. Bounce around, find a new favorite band, and have fun. Thank you in advance for supporting this project.[...]

Sugar City

Sugar City deserves a lot of credit for the ceaseless work they have done to provide an open and collaborative space for all types of art in Buffalo. Over 5 years old, the arts collective is responsible for fostering a significantly stronger community of artists, musicians, and community activists. Even after losing their original space in Allentown, the organization regrouped and continued their work, sure to go even further now that they have a new space on Niagara Street. Perhaps the key to their continued success is their commitment to  being inclusive, welcoming and offering space to anyone with an idea and the wherewithal to make it a reality. They cannot be thanked enough for making a lot of wonderful things, including last year’s amazing Metro wide art and music show a reality. So, of course we tapped them to organize a showcase. Sugar City will be taking Hardware over[...]

Tonight: Sugar City’s Soul Night

With the recent revival of Sugar City’s new space on Niagara St., things are up and running again for the do-it-yourself Buffalo group. Tonight, they invite you to shake up your hips and let loose to the tunes of the soul movement. Talk with your groove and speak with your inner funk. Kicking off the night is Handsome Dan, followed suit by a crew of individuals who will surely bring the tempting, soothing sounds all evening long: DJ Press, DJ SALINGER, Boss Matto, and Czubie. To encourage safety, they’re granting free admission to bikers who come down wearing their helmets. Get buckled up and fly down to Milkie’s so your toes can stretch and knees get a little freaky. Use 5 charms to get in the door. This event is also 18+.  Now do yourself a favor and enjoy this live Marvin Gaye song!

Tonight: Horse Lords

If you have been looking for an excuse to head over to Sugar City’s new location (1239 Niagara Street), and have been itching to catch a show at their headquarters after the 2+ year hiatus, then tonight you may cross both of your list as the DIY collective will be hosting Baltimore instrumental act Horse Lords. A last minute addition on the quartet’s tour, tonight’s set should feature a groovy brand of krautrock that can go from minimal to beat heavy to brash at any moment.  You can get a better idea by listening to their most recent mixtape below. The show will be a part of Sugar City’s Across The Way: an art adventure event also occurring tonight starting at 5:30pm. Horse Lords are set to go on at 8pm sharp, and while there is no cover, donations are accepted and welcomed.

Just Announced: Herd Fest

Spring has arrived in Buffalo, and just like that, things are on the up.  With summer in the city nearly here, we are happy to announce our next big party plans. Rather than do another stand alone showcase, we decided to be a bit more ambitious this time around.  On June 20th and 21st, the first weekend of summer, we are proud to present Herd Fest. What is Herd Fest? Well, think of it as our own version of CMJ/SXSW. Nine showcases over a two day period in Allentown (and slightly beyond). And for this party, we invited a few of the blog’s closest friends around to be a part of the festivities by hosting their own showcases and personally selecting some of their favorite Buffalo acts to play. While final lineups and schedules won’t be released until May, here is a taste of what Herd Fest will be offering:[...]

Queen City Music Lottery Band, Nail School, Debuts First Song

On the eve of the Queen City Music Lottery Showcase, one of the randomly assembled acts, Nail School, has released its first track via bandcamp. Featuring members of JOHNS, Merchants, and Space Wolves, Nail School’s “Russian Bride” is a cut of dark, aggressive garage-punk that doesn’t sound too unlike some of singer John Toohill’s other projects, including the recently debuted Alpha Hopper. You can catch Nail School, along with Plosive, Move Real Fast Stop., and a handful of other brand new acts, tomorrow night at the Foundry (298 Northhampton St) starting at 6pm.

Sugar City Finds A New Home

Nearly two years after they closed up shop at the former Wadsworth location, Buffalo DIY collective Sugar City has found a new home. Located on the West Side at 1239 Niagara Street, the venue (pictured above) will continue to offer all ages, alcohol free events in various shapes and sizes under the art realm. Luckily, the group has not been dormant during their long search for a new space as their Ride the Metro, Queen City Music Lottery, and mainstay event, Soul Night, have gone on/continued despite not having a central hub. The art space, which should hold around 170 people, is currently under renovation and is projected to (hopefully) open sometime in the early summer.  Sugar City will be hosting an informal meeting at Niagara St. location on Thursday, March 27th at 6:30pm in hopes to recruit new volunteers, discuss community involvement, show off the new space, and maybe gain a[...]
