Herd Fest 2015: Day 3 (Part 2)

Herd Fest 2015 returned to Allentown Saturday night with three more loaded showcases sprinkled on to the block. With Silo Sessions setting up shop at Nietzsche’s, Quiet Country Audio taking over Duke’s, and the Wax Museum crew manning both rooms in Hardware, the final evening of the 2015 edition of the festival featured something for everyone. Tireless festival photography, Candace Camuglia, was able to capture the evening. Check out some select shots below, and for the full gallery from Day 3’s night time showcases, head over to the festival’s Facebook page.

Silo Sessions

Today is going to be a busy Saturday. If you’re looking to get the most out of your all-access Herd Fest bracelet, your itinerary will take you to Record Theatre in the afternoon, Black Dots in the evening, and the Buffalo bustle of Allen Street to cap off your fat schedule at a number of Allen’s finest watering holes. And if you tough it out and stay up and at ‘em for the final show of the night, you’ll find yourself at Nietzsche’s for the stacked, jacked and packed Silo Sessions showcase. Thanks to weekly videos of Silo Sessions—one of the local music scene’s newest and most unique upstarts—the cavernous natural reverb of Buffalo’s old grain silos has proven to be a valuable sonic entity in one of the city’s coolest new music spots. Since its inception last year, Silo Sessions has recorded over thirty musical performances in the Silos,[...]

Tonight: Sam Moss

Tonight, Sam Moss will become the latest artist to have his musicianship echo off the walls of Buffalo’s storied grain silos. Moss, a singer/songwriter from Boston Massachusetts, has been lauded for his haunting spin on roots music. His ghostly vocals, rhythmic string playing, and intensely personal performance style are sure to make this Silo Sessions, the first to be filmed with a live audience, one you don’t want to miss. Obody and T.J. Borden add to the musical delights. Because this show is the last of a series of fundraisers that benefit the Public Picnic, you have no excuse to miss it! Show will be held in Marine A at Silo City (look for signs when parking on Silo City Row), with performances beginning at 7pm.

Tonight: The Public Picnic Fundraiser

The Public Picnic, a new collaborative project between Silo Session and the Public, will host its first fundraiser tonight at Mohawk Place, hopefully shedding a bit more light on the summer, Silo City located events curated by the live session series and still fresh, weekly publication. One tap tonight for musical merriment will be a trio of the city’s finest songwriters: Alex Berkley, Sonny Baker, and Laura Buckley. The Evil Things, a long time duo featuring Pine Fever band mates Andy Pothier and Levi Van Cleve, will come out of a long hibernation for a special performance this evening as well. Music begins this evening at 8pm. Event runners are asking for a donation of $5-$8 at the door.

Just Announced: Landlady

We are having one of those slow days in the office again, just staring out the window, watching Buffalo continue to freeze, but luckily, an under-the-radar show just got added to the Mohawk Place calendar that we think is worth your attention. Brooklyn’s off kilter Landlady, a band which combines elements of Dirty Projects, TV on the Radio, and Yellow Ostrich, will be making its return to Buffalo on Wednesday, April 22nd, at Mohawk Place. Those in attendance at the Silo Sessions launch party this past summer saw the five-piece put on a stunning performance as the sun set along side the grain elevators while on tour in support of the fantastic 2014 release, Upright Behavior. Speaking of Silo Sessions, the show is in support of a new collaborative project between the video series and the Public, so keep an eye out for further details. Tickets are available (we think), and[...]

Silo Sessions Premieres Latest Installment feat. Aaron Folmsbee

One of my favorite, although short lived, bands to emerge out of Buffalo over the last couple years was Marine Biologist, a emotional post-rock outfit that featured a revolving cast of musicians all based around singer/songwriter Aaron Folmsbee. Folmsbee, who also was a member of Bourbon & Coffee, recently moved out west for a year to serve as a musical apprentice (I think?), but before leaving town, managed to record a haunting clip for the Silo Sessions series, which has continued to release quality clip after clip on a weekly basis. Watch Folmsbee in the video below perform “Ballerina” while sitting on top of a ladder. P.S. Folmsbee recently hinted he may start recording some new Marine Biologist material so keep an eye out and fingers crossed. Silo Session 28 : Aaron Folmsbee from silosessions on Vimeo.

Silo Sessions Debuts Latest Clip feat. Bryan Johnson

We like to check in with local video blog, Silo Sessions, every so often. Since mid summer, the site has been premiering a new session, filmed within the grain elevator walls, of mostly local musicians delivering stripped down performances on a weekly basis. The last few weeks have featured some great clips from Andrew Biggie, T.J. Borden, and Mink, to name a few. For the 20th installment of the series, Bryan Johnson, lead singer of Bryan Johnson & Family, performed selections from his band’s forthcoming EP, Cool Your Jets, set to drop next week via Admirable Traits. Watch the Bryan Johnson session below, and for past installments of the series, click here.

Silo Sessions Premieres New Installment Feat. JOHNS

Just over a month into the new video blog series, Silo Series, and we have already been treated to some fantastic clips from musicians like Nat Baldwin, Jax Deluca, and Julie Bryne. Today’s latest installment, the sixth in the on going series, featuring an acoustic set from Buffalo garage act, JOHNS, in addition to bonus songs from JOHNS’ members Nick Gordon and Sean Kader. What makes Silo Sessions so special is pairing the unusual space with a variety of musicians, genres, and sounds, and in featuring JOHNS, the musicians have left the normal comfort of West Side basements to perform in one of Buffalo’s most unique venues. Watch the full clip of JOHNS, with Nick Gordon and Sean Kader below. You can also brush up on past sessions here.

Silo Sessions Debuts Nat Baldwin Performance

After this weekend’s successful launch party over at Silo City, Silo Sessions, a weekly live video blog, launched its first installment featuring Nat Baldwin of the Dirty Projectors. The blog fittingly kicks of its series with the artist whose performance was one of the inspirations of the project. The stand up bass extraordinaire, who has made it a habit of performing in Buffalo over the years, delivers a stunning and haunting performance in the site’s inaugural session. Silo Sessions will be releasing a new session, all filmed within Silo City’s grain elevators, every week over the coming year, featuring performances from both local and touring acts, many of whom played Saturday night’s event. Follow Silo Sessions website for future installments. Watch the full session with Nat Baldwin below.

Silo Sessions Announces Launch Party

Since closing up shop at the Vault last year, former venue runner Kevin Cain has had his hands in various projects, including the former Monday night Inventory Series at Hardware, curating diverse local showcases all over Buffalo, and performing with a cast of musicians in all forms and sounds. On Saturday, June 14th Cain’s long time pet project, Silo Sessions, will finally make its debut. Cain has spent the last year recording and taping musicians in the Perot Grain Elevator at Silo City. Julie Byrne, Dirty Projector’s Nat Baldwin, and Sam Goodwell are among the sessions first installment of intimate performances, which are planned to be released as a video blog. In honor of the session series, Cain will host a launch party, featuring many of the Silo Sessions contributors, in addition to local acts like Mallwalkers, Jack Toft, Alex Berkley & the Atlanta Falcons, and more. The event will consist of three[...]
