Big Day In at the Haunt (12/05/15)

What more is there to say about Big Day In? Year after year, the one day festival hosted at the Haunt in Ithaca never disappoints with outrageous lineups , but I really think that this one takes the cake.  Due to a scheduling constraint I was only able to catch the latter end of the festival, the last six or so bands, and I’m really bummed, as I have heard nothing but good things about all bands featured on this year’s bill.  The festival not only featured some incredible local acts, but boasted some insane touring bands as well.  Check out some photos from the last five bands of the night below, and click here for a full gallery of photos from those bands. Modern Baseball at the Opera House (12/03/15)

Well, I learned three things at this show. One, that Jeff Rosenstock needs to be elected president. I’m not really sure why, but he does. Second, that there is nothing like the absolute MADNESS of a sold out PUP hometown show, and third being that stage diving is a dangerous game. Almost right from the get go with Tiny Moving Parts, the crowd was in a frenzy, passionately singing along to the band’s deeply personal, hard hitting lyrics.  Jeff Rosenstock then took the stage and initiated a total party, screaming at the top of his lungs, and even with being the one band on this tour that COULD be considered the odd one out, seemingly had won the entire crowd over by the end of his set, following a great cover of “Dancing Queen” by ABBA. Then, things got real insane real quick.  It’s almost hard to explain how the home town[...]

Sleepy Hahas at Dreamland (11/21/15)

Local art space, Dreamland, was host to a great bill of a mix of electro, psych, and post-rock this past Saturday night. Sleepy Hahas headlined the bill, while Moody Cosmos, Tomoreaux, and Space Cubs provided support. Check out some of the shots from the show bellow, and click here for a full gallery. Sixties Future EP Release Party at Nietzsche’s (11/20/15)

Those in attendance on Friday night’s show at Nietzsche’s were treated to what I am probably going to have to call my favorite locals only show of the year. Cooler kicked the night off right, and with only a few shows under their belt, they played an incredible set, sounding like they’ve been at it for years. Rochester natives Skirts then took the stage for a rare Buffalo show and got the crowd’s feet moving, followed by a great set by Buffalo psych freakers Aircraft, hot off a new EP released on Admirable Traits Records. Sixties Future reminded the Buffalo audience that they mean business, ripping through tracks off of their new EP, also out on Admirable Traits. Screaming Females at Mohawk Place (11/03/15)

Another night, another insane show at the Mohawk Place, and this one literally people hanging off of the ceiling (see below). Buffalo’s Hot Tip started the night off, showcasing their straight up spooky style of punk. Potty Mouth soon followed, treating the crowd to an awesome set of their pop inspired punk jams. And it came as no surprise that Screaming Females’ style melodic punk had the crowd in an absolute frenzy by the end of their set. Soul Patch w/ Sixties Future at Mohawk Place (10/30/15)

For the second year in a row, we teamed up with Buffalo alt-rock cover kings Soul Patch for sold out, Halloween party banger. With buzzing local rockers Sixties Future opening, Soul Patch proceeded to unleash two nostalgia heavy sets on to Mohawk Place’s packed crowd. Check out some select shots from the show below, and for a Brendan O’Connor’s full gallery from Friday night’s party, click here. Soul Patch Sixties Future Photos by Brendan O’Connor

Shellshag at Sugar City (10/21/15)

Last night, the first Yace Booking showcase at Sugar City took place, and hopefully, it was not the last. The show set off with a quick set from touring pop punk act Rational Anthem, followed by a raucous set from local garage rock act Kharlos. Mallwalkers then took the stage to showcase their unique brand of danceable funk-punk. Finally, on tour for their latest release, Why’d I Have to Get so High?, Shellshag ripped through their set, no doubt winning the crowd over by the end of the evening.  Check out some shots of the show below, and click here for a full gallery. In The Valley Below at the Tralf Music Hall (10/20/15)

After playing at both Kerfuffle and UB’s Springfest, In The Valley Below returned to play their first headlining show in Buffalo at the Tralf Music Hall this past Tuesday. The LA duo played through their 2014 album The Belt, with a set that included their hugely successful songs “Peaches” and “Hymnal.” Opening for ITVB was California-based group Clara-Nova. Joywave at Waiting Room (10/9/15)

A sweltering Waiting Room paid host to the local homecoming of hot as fire electro pop outfit Joywave, making the first of its back-to-back WNY appearances before heading home to Rochester the night after for a rapturous home town gig. Joining the five piece was pop siren Grace Mitchell and rising Roch besties KOPPS. Check out select shots from Friday’s show below, and for a full gallery, click here. KOPPS Grace Mitchell Joywave

Bully at Mohawk Place (09/26/15)

Since the show’s announcement, I have been hyping this past Saturday night’s Bully gig to all of my friends as one of the potentiality best shows of the year, and I was damn near right. Thinking they could properly warm up the crowd for what was to come, the Dead Soft and Heat delivered absolutely incredible sets, but there was nothing that either could do to really prepare you for the Nashville buzz band’s enormous sounding, raucous performance. There are still a few months left this year, but I can already tell that this is going to be on my list of the best shows of 2015.  Check out some photos from the show below, and a full gallery of the night’s shots, click here. Mikal Cronin at Mohawk Place (9/15/15)

As summer comes to a close, I am reminded of all of the incredible shows that come through Buffalo. Last night at Mohawk Place, though, I was greeted with a strong reminder that just because the season is turning over, doesn’t mean the barrage of shows will be stopping any time soon. The Cairo Gang and Calvin Love both played stellar opening sets, and Mikal Cronin and his backing band played an upbeat and indisputably memorable set, spanning his entire catalog. Check out our photos from the show below, and click here for a full gallery. The Cairo Gang Calvin Love Mikal Cronin

EdgeFest 2015 at the Outer Harbor (9/12/15)

In spite of Saturday’s less than ideal weather, 103.3’s annual Edgefest was hugely successful. Thousands turned out on a dreary day to see the likes of Rise Against, Coheed & Cambria, Modest Mouse, and many other groups as the rain ceased to let up. Local band Made Violent has created quite a fan base over the last couple years and put on a show that seems to ensure its continued success. The trio, who leave for a two week tour of the UK today, managed to set the tone of the show and the other acts followed suit. Edgefest was a show not to be missed, downpour and all. Chon at the Studio at Waiting Room (9/10/15)

I was not expecting the amount of extreme technical proficiency that Chon brought to the stage at the Studio at the Waiting Room on Thursday night. The quartet seamlessly ripped though its entire set list without missing a beat, nailing every single note, leaving the crowd in awe. Regardless of your level of interest in instrumental progressive rock, you really have to hand it to these dudes for the amount of talent the possess. Check out some of the photos from the show below.  Click here for a full gallery. Chon

60 Percent: Fat Wreck Chords Celebrates 25 Years

Believe it or not, Punk in Drublic is not NOFX’s best album. Actually, their best material was released between 1997 and 2006, a hot streak starting with So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes and capped off with the underrated Wolves In Wolves Clothing. Before and after this period, the band released some good albums with great songs but nothing that demonstrated the cohesion, quality, and subtle experimentation of the four studio albums and several EP’s (including The Decline and Never Trust A Hippy) released during this time. An integral part of NOFX’s history is Fat Wreck Chords, the independent punk rock label run by frontman Fat Mike and Erin Burkett, his now ex-wife. I won’t go into great detail about the label’s history, but interested parties should check out the CBC’s recent interview with Fat Mike and for a great interview with Erin Burkett head over to Damian of Fucked Up’s podcast. This year, the label[...]
