Tonight: Sheer Mag

Philadelphia punk band Sheer Mag takes over tonight at the Mohawk with Lost Balloons and Mallwalkers. If rock is indeed the new punk, Sheer Mag and their magnificent front woman Tina Halladay has it turned up to 11, taking the proto cock rock of the 70’s and the DIY ethos and abandon of punk to the hungry masses minus the misogyny and nascent dude bro connotations endemic of 70’s hard rock and it’s cultural legacy to create something meaningful, righteous and vital for today’s increasingly diverse audiences. In town in support of the their very buzzworthy debut LP Need To Feel Your Love and one of the subjects of a New York Times feature on women in rock over the weekend, this is Sheer Mag’s time… and a big get for the Mohawk and for local audiences. Opening the show will be Madison Wisconsin’s Lost Balloons flying the flag for the international garage[...]

Tonight: SLUGS

Rochester by way of Los Angeles trippy as hell slackrock outfit SLUGS will be laying down their enigmatic vibes tonight  when they return to Mohawk Place. Founded by brother-sister combo Marissa and James Longstreet, the two were staples in the Rochester music scene, performing under their electro-pop project High Drags. SLUGS is a bit of a change in pace from the hyper pop earlier workings, but still on par in substance. Also on the bill are Slowcooker along with tuneful post punkers Passed Out and garage rock duo Space Is Haunted. Doors are at 7pm and cover is $6. Bedroom Attempts by SLUGS

Their new LP that came out in June,  And The Magic Of Horses, is a blast from front to back.  Opening up the show will be two local acts, The Gennies and Super-Tugger. Doors are set to open for the show at 8pm, and there is an $8 cover at the door.  This is one you won’t want to miss.

Tonight: Cayetana

Cayetana is one of the buzziest bands in the blogosphere right now and we’re lucky enough to host them tonight in our fair Queen City. The Philadelphia-based trio embodies the IDGAF spirit of punk, capturing a moment in time with their healthy mix of folk, indie, and punk elements. Baltimore’s lilting bedroom-pop mastermind Snail Mail is also on the bill, making for an excellent evening of strong lyrical sentiment and good vibes. Tonight’s show an 18+ shindig at Mohawk Place. Lo-fi lovers are in for a treat tonight.  Edgar Clinks will be bringing their lo-fi indie sounds to Mohawk Place with a stacked supporting lineup. The band is coming down from Rhode Island, and recently dropped a tight single, titled “As My Daydreams Swim By.” As far as locals go, we’ve got Jesse Kaufman & The Spirit of Little Baltimore, Sparklebomb, as well as Ex-Pat, a weirdo solo act via SUNY Purchase. Slow Caves

Slow Caves are an exciting power pop band out of Fort Collins, Colorado and tonight they are bringing their killer vibes to Mohawk Place. Fronted by brothers, Jakob and Oliver Mueller, Slow Caves are a refreshing update to the jangly indie rock sound, mixed with a tasteful amount of synth. They are coming off their recently released EP, Desert Minded on Old Flame Records. Playing alongside Slow Caves on this stacked bill are Coral Collapse, a shoegaze influenced group that make use of a bevy of wonderful textures, and Yali, a folk-rock inspired band that use solid vocal melodies. Wildhoney at Mohawk Place (05/04/17)

A couple weeks back, Baltimore pop/shoegaze five piece, Wildhoney, returned to Buffalo for yet another fantastic show.  The bands ability to not only create an insane wall of sound, but their ability to keep the music super catchy and interesting were in full effect, coming together to pull off one of the best sets I’ve seen so far this year.  The new tracks that they played sounded incredible live, as did their older releases.  Local emo four piece, Honey., and Albany based pop act, Cannon the Brave, kicked things off, making for a memorable night.  Check out some photos from the show below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. honey Cannon the Brave Wildhoney

Tonight: SMUG

Buffalo’s music scene is definitely fluid, with bands coming and going, frequent collaboration, and sometimes bands up and change names. Case in point: the reborn punk rock band Naturalists, now known as SMUG, who took a break, changed their sound, recorded a forthcoming debut album, and rebranded themselves with a nifty all caps name that’s got fans of Naturalists eager to see what’s next. What do these guys sound like now? Nobody knows but them, but the impenetrable mystery becomes clearer tonight at their debut show tonight the Mohawk with tuneful surf rock darlings Dreambeaches, punk rock machine The Slums, and space rock explorer Moody Cosmos. Doors at 8pm and cover is $5. Wicked Dreams/ Grown Up by The Naturalists

Tonight: Wildhoney

After multiple nights of awesome shows over the past week or so, Mohawk Place continues it’s streak with a show from Baltimore’s Wildhoney.  The dream pop tinged shoegaze act has not put out any new music for quite some time, but what they have in their catalog so far is stellar.  Their last LP, Your Face Sideways, came out on Topshelf records in 2015, and is filled with catchy hooks and dreamy undertones from front to back.  As heard in their Audiotree session, I’m sure the band’s massive sound will translate fantastic in a live setting. Buffalo’s own honey and the Good Neighbors will open the show, alongside Albany’s Cannon the Brave.  Tickets are available at the door for $10, and doors are set to open at 8.

Screaming Females at Mohawk Place (4/30/17)

Screaming Females returned to Buffalo after a lengthy absence to play a packed house at Mohawk Place on Sunday, April 30th, in support of their latest album, 2015’s Rose Mountain. The New Brunswick, New Jersey trio played an eardrum-obliterating set of serrated rock defined by its sheer intensity and lockstep precision. Marissa Paternoster’s full-throated voice and blaring guitar found the perfect foil in Michael Abate and Jarrett Dougherty’s robust rhythmic thunder. Opening that night were Buffalo’s own funk-punk freaks, Mallwalkers, whose horn-driven, new wave madness (literally) turned up the heat. Mallwalkers Screaming Females

Tonight: The Life and Times

The Life and Times are a prolific trio from Chicago who have been releasing sprawling LPs for the past 12 years. Some of the tags on their Bandcamp page aptly describe them as “spacecrunk” or “thinkrock.” Their music is moody, spacey, sonically overwhelming, symphonic and always grandiose, but they also haven’t lost the romanticism of being a good ol’ fashioned rock band. They return to Buffalo tonight to celebrate the release of their fifth, self-titled LP. Support tonight comes from Buffalo’s own Chevron Bloom. Doors are at 8:00pm. Tickets are $8 advance, $10 at the door.

Japanese Breakfast at Mohawk Place (4/23/17)

Japanese Breakfast’s dreamy indie-pop was met with rapturous acclaim at Mohawk Place on Sunday, April 23rd, at the band’s first live appearance in Buffalo. Equal parts shimmering and sinister, Michelle Zauner’s emotive songs express both harrowing loss and radiant joy over a bed of gossamer guitars and transcendent pop hooks. Supporting Japanese Breakfast that night was Rebecca Ryskalczyk, a singer-songwriter specializing in spartan guitar confessionals, and local act The Leones, a ghostly psych-rock quartet with a penchant for darkness. Check out the photos below. Tonight: Passed Out

Another Saturday night, another stacked lineup.  Head down to Mohawk Place tonight to catch four solid acts, Bryan Johnson and Family, Marquee Grand, Wren Williams & The Sons of Luther, and Passed Out.  Most of the acts sharing the stage tonight are all fresh off the releases of new material or about to put out some new stuff, so if you haven’t caught any of them before, now is the time. The show is set to kick off at Mohawk Place at 8pm, and with a cover of only five bucks, how could you go wrong?

Del Paxton Album Release Show at Mohawk Place (03/03/17)

Last Friday,  Buffalo emo / math rock trio, Del Paxton, celebrated the release of their fantastic new LP at Mohawk Place.  They managed to pull together some great local acts including VWLS, Yellow House, Sonny Baker Band, and Slow Cooker, resulting in what will probably one of be one of our favorite shows of the year.  You can check out our review of All Day, Every Day, All Night here, and check out some photos from the night below. Tonight: Del Paxton

If I’m being frank, it’s somewhat difficult to write a Buffalo show preview from a new angle for a band like Del Paxton, a band that has been at it for 4 years, covered lovingly on buffaBLOG countless times, and premiered on a national level by outlets like Impose Magazine, KEXP and The A.V. Club. What I can say is that Del Paxton is a pretty honest representation of what it means to be deeply immersed in this city’s DIY community.  They play music for the sake of playing music, all while continually supporting other local artists and sporting a humble attitude despite their laudable success. Whether or not its members agree, this band means a great deal to a lot of people, especially fellow Buffalo musicians. The band’s new record, All Day, Every Day, All Night (out today via Topshelf Records) is a completely cathartic experience. Though it might not[...]
