Tonight: Jacob Peter

Tonight, the Burchfield Penny Art Center will host an installment of their newly established concert series, ReSoundings. Designed as a live video recording session, the series focuses on providing a unique environment for composers and musicians to explore the acoustics of the Center. The session will be presented in the east gallery, where the ceilings are 28′ high and boasts a five and a half second reverb. Audiences are treated to the opportunity to witness the recording as an intimate performance within an unconventional space. The featured performer this evening is local composer Jacob Peter. A fixture among the Buffalo music scene, the multi-instrumentalist has meticulously crafted a body of intricate and delicate contemporary songs across 3 EPs (all of which are available for free via bandcamp). Jacob Peter will be joined live by keyboardist Harry Graser and drummer Gabriel Wells. Doors will open at 6:30pm with a show start[...]

Tonight: Robert Earl Thomas

Tonight chilled out and trippy indie folk rocker Robert Earl Thomas rolls through Mohawk Place with boffo opening support from local wunderkind Jacob Peter and Oats Holy Roller. Taking a break from psychedelic dream pop band Widowspeak, Robert Earl Thomas released his debut LP Another Age in February, a tight collection of woozy and slightly glammy 70’s AM gold American pop that’s groovy, real easy on the ear, and probably ideal for cooling it down on a hot and steamy summer night. Meanwhile, the virtuoso Jacob Peter, who is seemingly everywhere in the best way possible, will be there too, a good thing if you’re down with good music; and be sure to get there early for Oats Holy Roller, who will bare his soul and metaphorically set your hair on fire with only his voice and an acoustic guitar. Doors are at 7pm and cover is $5. Another Age by[...]

Jacob Peter – Echolalia

The byline for Jacob Peter’s debut EP simple states the definition of the phenomena for which this release is named; Echolalia [ek-oh-ley-lee-uh]: the uncontrollable and immediate repetition of words spoken by another person. Throughout the EP, the Buffalo-based multi-instrumentalist and composer implements this theme both lyrically and musically. He explores, reflects upon, and calls to question the vast repetitions we experience in life, both harmful and beneficial, unwanted and intentional. The arrangements and production match the subject matter, taking the listener on an eclectic journey of recollection and repetition, mining a deep well of musical influences, ranging from The Beatles to Joanna Newsom to Debussy to Grizzly Bear. Echolalia starts off with the instrumental track “Pattern,” a piano progression that lilts forward before the bursting open with twinkling ambience across the speakers. From there, Peter takes us on a tour of sonic textures, never letting each song (nor the EP[...]

Tonight: The Tins Tour Kickoff

Buffalo’s reigning psych-pop kings The Tins are celebrating the release of a new jam “Friday Afternoon” with a bunch of delightful friends at a delightful venue. This particular show is the kick off of The Tins’ upcoming fall tour. Fellow Buffalo dream pop heavyweights Applennium will be in tow, as well as Texan act Tele Novella and indie-soul act Jacob Peter. Tonight’s show is at Nietzsche’s at 9:00pm. Bring $10 if you want to get in the door. For the truest Tins experience, be sure to familiarize yourself with “Friday Afternoon” below.

Jacob Peter & Shauna Presto Team Up for “Wander”

‘Tis the season for merriment and friendship, and in the spirit of such togetherness (and apparently in my case, cheesy intros), we have a nice collaboration for you before the year comes to a close. Solo musician Jacob Peter has been all over the music scene lately, from the lush synthscapes of Humble Braggers to the axe-in-lap simplicity of his bluesy solo material. This time around finds Peter arranging and producing a track written and sung by buffaBLOG’s own Shauna Presto. In essence, the song, titled “Wander,” is a true collaboration; elements of both artists are easily discernable within the work, but not without an obvious symbiosis. Whimsical mandolin and Presto’s smoky-sweet vocals open the track, initially conjuring vibes of Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit and the wilderness simplicity of Eddie Vedder’s solo material. Peter’s influence arrives later in the song with an evolving eclecticism in the instrumentation and[...]

Tonight: The Bones of J.R. Jones

J.R. Linabury, the one-man creative force behind the era-bending blues tunes of solo project The Bones of J.R. Jones, will take the iconic stage of Mohawk Place later tonight. “Solo” is a word that only goes so far when describing the project; Linabury may be the only body on stage during performances, but somehow he doesnt appear alone. He transcends the one man/one guitar stigma, crafting swirling folk songs using guitar, banjo, hi-hat, and bass drum in a commendably simultaneous fashion. The whole package is astonishingly honest, and shatters the boundaries and limiting capabilities of “solo” projects as they’re typically defined. Joining J.R. on tonight’s bill are the harmony kings in local psyche act Deadwolf and the soulful musings of Jacob Peter (Humble Braggers, Dreambeaches), also of Buffalo. Doors open promptly at 7pm with a $5 cover.

Jacob Peter

Tonight: Jacob Peter

With his most recent EP release Wind Song in circulation, and a handful of acoustic solo shows under his belt, local indie-soul act Jacob Peter is finally debuting his new material with a full band in tow at Dreamland tonight. It’d be tough to not call attention to the similarities in song stylings that Jacob shares with John Mayer (more so during his Born and Raised days), though there is a slightly more theatrical quality to this EP. The lyrics deliver honest sentiments about navigating through the often ambivalent landscape of love, loss and exploration of oneself — moving forward from it, being pushed backwards by it, and standing still through it all. The instrumentals are anything but uncertain. They are warm, they are haunting, they are demonstrative of all the intricacies hiding between those two things. They effectively bring listeners on a journey; one that I can only imagine[...]

Jacob Peter Releases Wind Song

Still catching up from the holiday lull, personally. Takes a lot out of you to get through another year and there’s some stuff that got lost in the mix. Jacob Peter’s Wind Song, for instance. He sent this over a while back and I’m just now getting to write it up. Jacob plays guitar with Humble Braggers, but his solo EP is a different beast. Much folkier, for instance, and much moodier. There are some very catchy pop songs on here (like the opener, “Stella”) but it’s definitely at its most interesting in its broodier, more Jeff Buckley-esque moments  (for example, “The Line Between Us and Being”). Check out the rest of the EP here.
