Tonight: Cheap Girls

Michigan three-piece Cheap Girls have mastered the “throwback” feel. Their quintessential nostalgia-pop-punk sound is completely accessible but manages to maintain a characteristic garage-esque untidiness. There is a palpable earnestness in everything from the vocals to the slushy guitar parts that makes each and every song so inviting. In it’s most simple form, it’s feel good music for those that feel bad and the perfect band to keep in your pocket when you’re feeling a little wistful. If you’re at all a fan of The Menzingers or The Smith Street Band, I highly recommend seeing Cheap Girls tonight at The Studio at Waiting Room. Some of our favorite local bands including Mallwalkers, Cooler and Apathetic are slated to open. Doors are at 6:30pm and tickets are $12. Top 20 Buffalo Tracks: 20-11

It’s that time of year again, where we re-think and dissect every local song that we’ve come across organically or via submission. This is our fourth year counting down our top songs and this year, like every other year, has been difficult to whittle down. Like we always remind people, this list is subjective and not the end-all be all. I am sure there are amazing local songs that aren’t on our radar,  but from what we have heard, we as a group have determined blog’s favorite songs of 2015. Sixties Future EP Release Party at Nietzsche’s (11/20/15)

Those in attendance on Friday night’s show at Nietzsche’s were treated to what I am probably going to have to call my favorite locals only show of the year. Cooler kicked the night off right, and with only a few shows under their belt, they played an incredible set, sounding like they’ve been at it for years. Rochester natives Skirts then took the stage for a rare Buffalo show and got the crowd’s feet moving, followed by a great set by Buffalo psych freakers Aircraft, hot off a new EP released on Admirable Traits Records. Sixties Future reminded the Buffalo audience that they mean business, ripping through tracks off of their new EP, also out on Admirable Traits. Tonight: Sixties Future EP Release Party

After stoking serious interest about town with some impressive shows at the Mohawk Place this summer and fall, not to mention at Dreamland opening for Made Violent’s last local show before their UK tour with Wolf Alice and Drenge, Buffalo’s next big band, Sixties Future will be celebrating the release of their highly anticipated debut EP tonight at Nietzsche’s. If that wasn’t enough, the release party also features from newbie emo/grunge locals Cooler, the soaring beach punks of Rochester’s Skirts, and the always excellent Aircraft. For my part, I don’t think I’ll ever forget that first time seeing Sixties Future at Mohawk this past summer, watching these guys unload a pleasing and distinctly Rust Belt tinged brand of American rock with notes of Springsteen and The National, and exchanging incredulous looks with fellow staffers Brendan O’Connor and Ron Walczyk while Mike Moretti stood at the back smiling beatifically like a happy papa.[...]

Cooler Releases Debut EP 1993

Cooler’s debut EP is nothing less than a power statement. The Buffalo four-piece has brought a hard hitting slice of 90’s infused fuzz-rock to the table in the form of 1993, and it certainly hasn’t gone unnoticed. With wailing vocal melodies and smoky undertones, you’re given something to latch onto right away as a listener. The fuzzed out guitar riffs top off their entire sound, which I can only imagine is intensified in a live setting. The whole outfit is reminiscent of Pity Sex but with discernible vocals, mixed with the grit of local rock trio The Naturalists (whom Cooler make the perfect counterpart to in my opinion). At three songs long, the EP is short and sweet, but still a cutting testament to the natural craft they have. Give it a listen below.

Cooler Releases Debut Track “Cringe”

Although Cooler is an infant in band years , the group is already well on it’s way to explode beyond Buffalo’s music walls. Composed of a blend of solo artist Aileen Yates, two members of Brother Keep (Nathan McDorman and Nick Sessanna), and rounded out by former Lancer drummer-turned-bassist Adam Cwynar, the band has hit the ground running, already landing a deal with emo upstart label, NDE Records. With an EP titled 1993 coming out September 22nd and another batch of studio sessions already completed, 2016 is set to be a breakout year for the fledgling four piece. This past week, Cooler’s grungy debut track “Cringe” hit the internet on esteemed scene blog CouchKing. Unsurprisingly, the song is all about looking back at all those things you regret doing in the past. Tonight: Gillian

In elementary school, I had this friend named Gillian (spelled the same way). She was a fearless girl careful coordinate every outfit, had every hair on her head neatly trimmed, was clear and concise, but was also totally unafraid to throw down on the monkey bars, make up  Britney Spears songs by herself at recess and live in an eccentric bubble of her own. All of this comes to mind because it seems to be an adaptive description for Gillian the band (hear me out on this one). The quintet has a sound that’s super cohesive and well thought out, but entirely daring at the same time. It’s a cool fusion between 70’s disco and 80’s power rock, all housed under an undeniably catchy umbrella of indie dance pop.
