Must See Shows (9/11/24-9/17/24)

Saturday, 9/14 @ 7pm Elemantra w/ Patchwork @ Black Dots The west side is set to host a double banger with locals Elemantra and Patchwork this Saturday night at one of Buffalo’s best record stores. The lineup consists of two locals at the top of Buffalo’s indie scene. Elemantra may be up your alley if you are a fan of a shoeagaze-y Mew meets Slowdive vibes, while Patchwork will impress followers of the 90’s college radio scene. Both bands are worth the field trip and it’s just $10 to support local artists.   Photo: Adam Parshall Monday, 9/16/24 @ 7pm Pile w/ Oceanator @ Buffalo Iron Works It’ll be a Monday night ripper with the return of Boston’s Pile to the 716. The heavy hitting act will be debuting at the highest capacity venue they’ve played in the city, coming a long way from the days of playing on Niagara[...]

Tonight: Too Many Zooz

Tonight NYC trailblazers Too Many Zooz bring their enigmatic and irresistibly danceworthy brand of brass band music to Buffalo Iron Works with fellow NYC vibe guru Birocratic. Ecstatically and virally bursting forth from the subway station busking scene with a sound and aesthetic that blends house, funk, and a few genres of jazz, the trio that is Too Many Zooz is all about groove, feelings, putting on a good show, and getting down. Opener Birocratic aka Brandon Rowan is a New Jersey by way of Brooklyn multi instrumentalist with a thing for Adult Swim calibre ethereal vibes and soulful emotions, so get there early. Tickets are $17 and doors are at 8pm.

Tonight: Ty Segall

Tonight prolific singer-songwriter-guitar wizard, Ty Segall, unplugs for a special set as part of his solo acoustic tour at Buffalo Iron Works. Get up close and personal with a man who needs no introduction. Since debuting as a solo act on the Orange County scene back in 2008, the one-man garage psych rock band has released an overwhelming and kaleidoscopic catalog of solo albums, EPs and side projects. This year alone he’s gifted us with three albums including the cover album Fudge Sandwich, collaboration with White Fence, Joy and perfectly realized double album, Freedom’s Goblin. But tonight Segall trades in his mind-bendingly lo-fi, raw and reverberating renditions for a sound more intimate and emotional. With a set list that promises favorites along with rarely performed records, don’t pass up this opportunity for a personal and unique show that’s a must-see for any music fan. Joining Segall is special guest and[...]

Tonight: Handsome Jack Album Release Party

Tonight is a shockingly busy night for Buffalo music fans, with shows going off all over downtown, and Buffalo Iron Works has a killer show lined up with soulful Lockport rock revivalists Handsome Jack celebrating the release of their third album Everything’s Gonna Be Alright at Buffalo Iron Works with heavy duty psych rockers Deadwolf and garage rock outfit Johnny Nobody. If you know anybody who says “rock is dead” you can tell them to get out of the house more and  send them down to the Cobblestone District to hear up to the minute new tunes from Handsome Jack, and possibly catch a taste of the new stuff on the horizon from the ever ambitious Deadwolf, who’ve been hard at work on a follow up to Heavy Heart. It’s all going down tonight, and doors are at 8pm and cover is $12.

Tonight: Deer Tick

Tonight, prolific and very gonzo Providence, Rhode Island indie Americana mainstays Deer Tick make a welcome return to the area for a show at Buffalo Iron Works with Liz Cooper & The Stampede. After a four year absence the full throttled up roots rockers returned in a big way with two albums, Deer Tick Vol. 1 and 2, one that rocked hard and another that burned a little quieter, with both providing a wide canvass for John McCauley and the fellows to get loose and showcase their range and fortitude. Opening the show will be bold Nashville psychedelic folk three piece Liz Cooper & The Stampede. Tickets are $30 and doors are at 8pm.

Tonight: Sloan

Canadian heroes and local favorites Sloan return to Western New York as part of their One Chord To Another 20th anniversary tour. The timeless Nova Scotian (sic) power pop rockers are themselves enjoying a major anniversary, having formed 25 years ago at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (yet another legendary band formed at an art school), and while they’ve never achieved widespread success in the US, they’ve cultivated a fanbase in border cities and towns over the decades like Buffalo that welcomes them whenever they play here. On this tour fans will be getting two sets of Sloan: One Chord To Another in it’s entirety and a whole set of Sloan classics, so don’t mess around. Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm, and tickets are $27.50.

Tonight: The Melvins

Legendary 80’s stoner rockers and alternative music survivors The Melvins return to the Queen City after a seven year absence to play The Buffalo Iron Works tonight. With not one but two albums in stores this year, Three Men And A Baby and Bases Loaded, the sludge metal masters will be joined by Seattle sludge rockers Helms Alee, promoting their fourth LP Stillicide. Day of tickets are $22 and doors open at 8pm. The Iron Works brick building will be vibrating mightily so prepare yourselves.

Tonight: Lazlo Hollyfeld Performs Radiohead’s In Rainbows

It’s been good times/bad times lately for local Radiohead fans: good times because the legendary UK art rockers just released their 9th studio album A Moon Shaped Pool, bad times because as of right now the band hasn’t scheduled a show for Toronto, depriving us for now of our customary pilgrimage up the QEW to see them. Hopefully that will change; hopefully Radiohead isn’t put off from playing Toronto after that regrettable stage collapse five years ago. In any case the new album is great (and their darkest record to date), and Lazlo Hollyfeld and friends from Applennium will be all we need, with a special performance of the band’s 2007 classic In Rainbows tonight at Buffalo Iron Works. Unlike the album, the performance will not be  “pay what you will” (a strategy that only works for Radiohead… the brilliant buggers) and will instead feature an entirely reasonable $7 cover. Chameleon Project opens[...]

Tonight: Joe Marcinek Band

If you respect yourself enough to listen to the best that music has to offer and understand that there is nothing more moving than live music, then you had better make your way down to Buffalo Iron Works tonight for the Joe Marcinek Band. Marcinek is known for “an ever evolving mixture of original compositions and incredible musicians. Each show has a slightly different lineup and interpretation. The music is a blend of jazz and funk with a cerebral emphasis on groove and improvisation.” Tonight’s special guests include Nate Werth of Snarky Puppy, Steve Molitz of Particle, and Mike Gantzer of Aqueous. The show is set to begin at 9:30pm. Tickets are $10 and while currently available at the door, it may be best to order them online in advance as this show has the potential to sell out. Guests are welcome ages 18 and up with proper ID.

Tonight: Turkuaz

Turkuaz, the nine-piece, power funk group from Brooklyn, in back in Buffalo and tonight’s show at Buffalo Iron Works is not one to miss. These guys throw it down with guitars, wind instruments, bass, percussion, keys, and backup vocals. This is funk turned up to 11. In addition to the power funk structure, a healthy mixture of both blues and more up beat pop makes for a complete and fulfilling sound. Not only will Turkuaz satisfy the funk fans out there, but there is no doubt that anyone into a more noodling jam will be just as impressed. If you are heading to the Harbor tonight, then Iron Works should be your next stop. Tickets are $15, doors at 9pm, show around 10pm. This is an 18+ show, so remember your ID. See you on the floor.

Steve Earle & The Dukes at Buffalo Iron Works (7/7/15)

Last night, American music legend Steve Earle transformed Buffalo Iron Works into a Sportsman’s-esque honky tonk, raising the roof with his pure country and western rock. The thrilled sold out crowd was blessed with an almost two hour set of Earle classics new and old, with nary a note of the BS and corny ass beats endemic of modern country. This was a true celebration of the music of the American south, with strong notes of blues and folk that unified the set and righteously eschewed musical segregation. Buffalo is definitely Steve Earle country as Iron Works packed in a way I’ve not seen yet, and his true believers went home very, very happy. I’d almost call it a religious experience, especially standing outside in the alley next to the stage in the rain (because it was too goddamn hot inside the bar), but I know Steve doesn’t hold with[...]

Tonight: Steve Earle & The Dukes

Legendary American singer/songwriter/alt country founder/novelist/actor Steve Earle makes a stop at Buffalo Iron Works this evening with backup from the Dukes and opening support from Austin TX husband and wife duo, The Mastersons. In town to promote his latest, 2015’s Terraplane, Earle has deservedly achieved hero status among his many devotees and admirers for his progressive outlook, hard-bitten eloquence, road warrior longevetiy, clean playing style, and authentic songwriting in the Guthrie tradition, while retaining some of that outlaw cool so missing from modern country. Steve Earle is the man, pure and simple, and his show tonight at Iron Works is a can’t miss if you were lucky enough to grab a ticket (the show sold out last week). Doors are at 8pm.

Tonight: Zach Deputy

Performing while under prepared should be a musician’s worst fear…right? Apparently not! When it comes to Zach Deputy, imprecise planning is what makes his act so unpredictable. After realizing his bassist couldn’t make show a while back, Deputy went right on without him and began looping instrumentals and vocals: a real DIY. Performing as a one-man band with the energy of five, he characterizes his music as, “island-infused drum n’ bass gospel ninja soul.” What’s that mean? I’m not quite sure. I characterize his music as funky and bluesy experimental rock. Regardless, he’s bound to leave your jaw hanging to the floor, with the question in your mind: “How the hell did he do that?” Deputy will perform tonight at Buffalo Iron Works at 9pm. Tickets cost $15 at the door.

Tonight: The Soft White Sixties

Buffalo Iron Works will be representing for the people tonight when the Cobblestone venue hosts San Francisco’s The Soft White Sixties along local favorites Handsome Jack. Earnestly rocking what’s been dubbed “working class soul,” this maximum R&B quartet are touring behind its just released debut album, Get Right, and for a city nostalgically holding onto it’s once proud working class ethos, this could be a pretty good show. Opening the evening’s entertainments at 9pm will be Buffalo by way of Lockport powerhouse, Handsome Jack, fresh off a Record Store Day 2015 set at Record Theatre last Saturday. Tickets are available at the door for $12.

Aqueous at Buffalo Iron Works (4/18/15)

Aqueous returned to Buffalo, the city they call home, for an energetic sold out crowd at Buffalo Iron Works last night. Last November, I made the mistake of telling guitarist Mike Gantzer that as far as “jam” bands go, I could really see Aqueous climbing to the top.  He said “Thanks man, but we’re not a “jam” band.  We’re a ‘Compositional Groove/Rock’ band and that’s the style we’re going for.”  After a few Heady Toppers at Burlington’s infamous Nectar’s, hearing this really threw me for a spin.  After a little time to  process what Mike said, it made perfect sense.  Regardless of how you might classify Aqueous, they fucking jammed hard last night, and the crowd reacted. The band heralded the night as “Aqueous does Cake” or as fans immediately coined “Cakequeous.”  With an opening set of exclusively originals, the band kicked off with “Underlyer” and “Complex Pt. 1.” The two juxtaposed[...]
