Edgefest 2016 (07/31/16)

Local radio station 103.3 the Edge came back this year with another stacked lineup for their annual one day festival, Edgefest.  This year, the fest took place in Canalside opposed to the outer harbor, which I’m sure was a welcome change to many. With rain in the forecast, the crowd still showed  up in huge numbers, and lucky for them, there wasn’t a drop of rain in sight all day.  With blistering sets from Detones, Joywave, Tokyo Police Club, and more, this is sure to stand up as one of Edgefest’s best showings to date.   Check out some photos from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery The Joy Formidable Tokyo Police Club Joywave Sam Roberts Band City and Colour Deftones

Pitchfork Music Festival: Sunday

While I’m sad to see it go, Pitchfork Music Festival was without a doubt one of my favorite music festival experiences of all time.  There wasn’t a band all weekend that I was disappointed by, and I was blown away by multiple bands I hadn’t heard before. With a forecast filled with rain and thunderstorms almost all weekend, somehow the rain held off, making it near perfect. Basically, for the next year, you’ll find me in my room listening to Broken Social Scene counting down the days until next year’s festival. Saturday featured performances by Porhces, Kamsi Washington, FKA Twigs, and many more.  Check out some of the photos below, and if you want to see more than just 4 or 5 shots of each band, click HERE for a full gallery. Five Most Anticipated Acts of Pitchfork Festival: Sunday

Last year was my first ever Pitchfork Festival experience, and let me tell you, it’s something I’ll never forget.  The bands, the food, the city, and just the overall vibe of the festival, all come together to make one of my favorite music festivals – period.  The Chicago-based music festival boasts phenomenal lineups year after year, and 2016’s lineup is no different. As part of buffaBLOG’s coverage leading up to the festival this weekend, I will be highlighting my five most anticipated acts of each day of the festival.  You can check out last years photos here, here, and here. Porches at Red Stage (1:45pm) I almost immediately fell in love with Porches after hearing their 2013 record, Slow Dance in the Cosmos.  While their newest record, Pool, is a serious departure from their previous sound, it is something incredibly unique.  After last minute trip to Toronto  to see this band[...]

Royal Headache @ Blue Stage (2:45pm) This band is easily one of my most anticipated of the entire festival.  The punk / garage rock act from Australia released a new record in 2015, titled High which topped my top the list of my favorite albums last year. Julia Holter @ Green Stage (4:35pm)  Julia Holter’s 2015 album, Have You In My Wilderness, was almost immediately met with critical acclaim.  Her transition away from her more experimental ambient work and into a more art / baroque pop style was met with open arms.  I can’t wait to see how[...]

Frank Turner at Canalside (6/16/16)

Last night, Buffalo showed up for folk / alt rock act Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls. Frank Turner’s ability to work the crowd shined through,  as by the end of the night, everyone near the stage at Canalside seemed to be having the time of their lives.   While a ton of people showed up, not TOO many people showed up (looking at you Matt & Kim), making the show a pleasant experience for all. With an opening set from alternative rock act July Talk, this was another stellar free Canalside show for the books.  Check out shots from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery. Total Yuppies Release New Single “Dreaming”

Following the announcement of their new EP, Pleasantries, out July 1st, Rochester garage pop act Total Yuppies have released the lead single, “Dreaming.”  This will be the 585 quartet’s first official release, aside from a single “Normal Life,” which was released in late 2015. In the new track, Total Yuppies find the perfect level of simplicity.  “Dreaming” takes aim at the ever relatable post-college life, wasting your mornings,  avoiding people from your high school, and of course, drinking on the weekends.  The way dreamy sounding, clean vocals float over the bouncy guitar make the track nothing short of catchy as hell. Check out the track below, and pick up Pleasantries via Dadstache Records on July 1st.

Tiny Moving Parts at Waiting Room (05/31/16)

This past Wednesday night, the emos came out in droves to see Tiny Moving Parts at Waiting Room. The band has played Buffalo more than a few times over the past couple of years, and have built a strong local following. With relatable lyrics and a boisterous live show, the crowd was on its feet and singing along the whole show, partly due to some stellar opening sets from Buffalo’s own Alleys, as well as touring acts Free Throw and Prawn.  Check out some photos from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery. Tonight: Tiny Moving Parts

Tonight, Waiting Room once again proves it is the place to be for staked emo gigs as Minnesota’s Tiny Moving Parts will be making yet another stop in Buffalo,  this time in support of their newest release, Celebrate.  Also making a repeat stop will be indie-emo act Prawn, along with Nashville’s Free Throw. Tonight is the night to get sad. Doors open at 6:30pm with a showtime of 7pm, and local act Alleys will be kicking the show off. Tickets are only 14 bucks at the door.

Tonight: Drug Party Tapes 5 Year Anniversary Show

Over the course of the past five years, local DIY cassette label, Drug Party Tapes, has put out some absolutely essential releases from some incredible Buffalo bands.  In celebration of the first five, an all local show for the ages will be happening at Mohawk Place tonight, exclusively featuring bands somehow affiliated with the label.   All in attendance will be treated to sets from Scajaquada Creeps, Space is Haunted, Hot Tip, Mallwalkers, Big Suze, and the Utah Jazz.  This gig is stacked from start to end, so you’ll want to be on time for this one. Doors are set to open at 8pm, and music will probably kick off shortly after.  For only five bucks, this is a dream gig. As an added bonus, if you’re under 18, you get in for free if you bring along a legal guardian.

Tonight: A Giant Dog

Following the release of their newest album, Pile, Austin, TX based rock band, A Giant Dog will be making a stop at the Mohawk Place tonight.  On their major label debut on Merge Records, A Giant Dog finds the perfect balance of good old loud, aggressive, hard rock, but with stellar, meaningful lyrics to boot. After spinning the record a handful of times, there’s no doubt in my mind that they are going to put on a straight up boisterous live set. Kicking things off on the local side of things will be Uniform OPR and JOHNS.  Doors are set to open at 7pm with a showtime of 8pm, and it’s only five bucks.

Protomartyr at Mohawk Place (5/10/16)

After my introduction to Protomartyr last year at Pitchfork Festival, I was immediately hooked.  The dark, churning, yet insanely catchy style of post punk that the band boasted caught my ears, and after buying their commercial debut, Under the Color of Light, I had it on repeat for months.  The band also release a new record last year, titled The Agent Intellect, which was not only just as phenomenal, but the way the songs translated live was nothing short of fantastic.  While the band kept it quite serious on stage with minimal crowd interaction,  they were able to create a live sound that was damn near perfect. Check out some photos from the show below, featuring Buffalo act Facility Men, Philly post punks Psychic Teens, and Protomartyr.  Click HERE for for a full gallery. Sunflower Bean at Mohawk Place (5/8/16)

Last Sunday, buzzing New York City three piece, Sunflower Bean,  rolled through the Mohawk Place.  With some support from locals Get Money Squad, I don’t think anyone in attendance walked away disappointed.  Check out some shots from the show below, and click here for a full gallery.
