Bold Folly – I Think That It Is Wonderful

Forget the surreal cosmic expanse on the cover of Bold Folly’s I Think That It Is Wonderful– the key setting of the album is far more cramped: the dirty mouth. It’s an image that pops up at least twice, as far as I could decipher from guitarist and vocalist Timothy Zdrojewski’s shouted vocals. First, in “buddapest”: “When I talk to taxi drivers, I talk real loud with food in between my teeth.” And again, in “war games”: “Stick your dirty fingers in the back of my hungry mouth.” I’d bring those two lines into conversation with another seemingly innocent observation from “CAT,” which Zdrojewski screams at the top of his lungs: “We all breathe the same air.” Taken together, these lines imply the aesthetic universe in which I Think That It Is Wonderful lives – not the neverending cosmos, but inside a stinking mouth, a dank, dark space where the[...]

Tonight: Bold Folly

Always turned up to 11 psych punks Bold Folly are back and they mean business tonight at Nietzsche’s with a skull crushing lineup featuring Aircraft, The Molice, and Zurich Cloud Motors. Everything about this show will make your ESP tingle because every band on this bill values melting your mind: the rededicated but no less bonkers Bold Folly are a force of nature, heady and nihilistic in equal measure and back with a surf punky new single; Aircraft’s melodic psych rock is shinier and heavier than ever before; while Tokyo punk heroes and honorary Buffalonians The Molice bring pure joy and tight riffs wherever they play. Zurich Cloud Motors, hailing from Indianapolis, Providence, and Buffalo, specialize in unhinged garage rock transmitted from a parallel universe. Get ready because it’s going to be way too much in the best ways possible. Doors are at 9pm and cover is $7. War games by Bold[...]

Tonight: Wine Lips

Tonight,  Mohawk Place hosts a night of serious, uncut garage rock when it hosts Toronto’s very own Wine Lips, DC garage sludge rockers Teen Mortgage, Rochester’s The Dirty Pennies, and local ne’er do wells Bold Folly. Wine Lips busted out of the Toronto scene and onto the international stage thanks to their hard charging riffs, killer rhythms, and insouciant  and vaguely glam vocals from Cam Hilborn, and after an Asian tour last year this is the bands first tour south of the border. Washington DC’s Teen Mortgage are a skull crushing drum and guitar duo that unleashes a sound way bigger and heavier than what any two dudes should be able to wield by themselves, so be prepared for sweet sonic overload. Meanwhile, The Dirty Pennies from Rochacha just released their first EP last month of vocative and shoegazey yet rousing garage rock, and local psych rockers Bold Folly will be[...]

Tonight: Coral Collapse

Nietzsche’s is the best place to be tonight if you are looking for new music. Come out and celebrate two new releases, Don’t Wait To See Me Say Goodbye from Coral Collapse and Shapes of Color from M.T. Lakes. Needless to say, it’s going to be a great time. Joining them are Buffalo’s “animal rock” experts Bold Folly, as well as the humble, soft-spoken offerings from The Shallows. Doors are at 9. $8 cover which includes a physical copy of Coral Collapse’s new album. Written by Mike Rakieki

Tonight: Mohawk Halloween

Under tonight’s creepy full moon, Buffalo’s Mohawk Place transforms into a rockin’ haunted house party as they host their annual and ghoulishly fun Halloween bash featuring local favorites and former local favorites. This stacked line-up has something for every ghost and ghoul. If you like to shake your bones to freaky electronica that’s been experimented on more than Frankenstein’s Monster, show up for the buzzworthy Space Cubs, immersive Bottler and hair-raising Lesionread. However, for those who prefer something they could run from a knife-wielding lunatic to, sink your fangs into the awesomely deranged psych-rock of Bold Folly. Also performing are Iron Fist, eulogizing undead 70’s rock stars, Hawkwind, and Episodic Memory (formerly Kristachuwan), the solo project of audio/visual artist and Space Cub tourmate, Chris Svoboda. For those who dare to enter, be forewarned, there will be a costume contest and more surprise tricks and treats to be revealed. Show at[...]

Tonight: Kal Marks

The fourth stop in their fall tour, touring Bostonites Kal Marks play the Tudor Lounge tonight! Having humble beginnings as a solo project, the indie rock trio have released three full-length albums through Exploding in Sound Records. Typically described as “the loudest band in Boston,” Kal Marks decided to switch things up for their latest release Universal Care, reigning in their volume and lightening the tone on a few tracks. Universal Care has influences in Nirvana and sludge rock, as well as the sounds we hear coming from more modern indie rock bands, namely Pile. The latest LP has been nominated for the “Album of the Year” award for the 2018 Boston Music Awards. Kal Marks is also a nominee for “Rock Artist of the Year.” Local artists Bold Folly and Soul Butchers are joining tonight’s show. Doors are at 9pm with music beginning shortly after. $5 at the door.[...]

Twin Speak Group

Tonight: Twin Speak

Groovy with a fresh coat of grime thrown on top comes close to approximating Utica act, Twin Speak, who will be stopping by the Mohawk Place tonight. Twin Speak’s singular blend of psych rock, stoner, and post-rock makes an almost transcendental experience. Their latest record, SOULSS puts you through a kaleidoscope of twists, turns, riffs, and beats. Think Explosions in the Sky with exceptionally more teeth, that are sharper and dripping with something’s blood. Joining them are psych-rock garage rockers, Bold Folly and lyrically driven indie group, Leyda. This won’t be a show you will want to miss. Doors are at 8pm, music at 9pm. $6 for the door.

5 Bands to Catch at Thin Man Brewery’s Summer Solstice

Today Thin Man Brewery celebrates their second annual Summer Solstice street festival, where the up-and-coming establishment takes over the Elmwood Village block between W. Utica and Hodge and provides ample tunes from talented locals as well plenty of craft beers to wet your whistle. Doors start at 12pm with the fun going until about 10pm. Tickets are $20 for the GA with a $30 VIP option for the high rollers. Here are five bands we recommend checking out today, beer in hand. The CPX (3pm) If there is a community festival in Buffalo, chance are the CPX will make an appearance on the bill – and with good reason. The Americana-country leaning outfit has been in the local scene for years with their accessible sound and commanding stage presence, the CPX is a good lead-in to an afternoon of brews and sunshine. Bold Folly (5:30pm) Bold Folly are an up-and-coming[...]

Tonight: The Ambulanters

Brit alternative band from Nebraska The Ambulanters drop by Milkie’s tonight to coincidentally play the release party for local psych/surf rockers Passed Out’s latest EP with David Dondero, Bold Folly, The Good Neighbors, and Passed Out, obviously. The fellas in Passed Out are back with the Aforementioned and How it Pertains to Absolutely Nothing, produced by Deadwolf’s Cody Morse and mixed by Elliot (M.A.G.S., KIN) Douglass, and lead single “Bukowski & Brautigan” is a literate and crunchy hit and run jam that you really ought to listen to right now. Please note The Ambulanters are not British in any way, but their sound is straight up British alternative, heavy on Joy Division and The Smiths, which is mighty tasty filtered through the band’s unassuming Midwestern lens.  Also hailing from the Midwest, Minneapolis songwriter David Dondero is in town in support of his latest album Inside The Cat’s Eye, while additional local support will[...]

Tonight: dreambeaches

Beloved Buffalo baroque indie surf pop band dreambeaches are back with their eagerly awaited second EP Disappearing Act, and they are rightly celebrating it’s glorious overabundance of riches with the people tonight at Milkie’s on Elmwood. Fearing Friday the 13th is for suckers, and if you’re going out you might as well go out strong kicking it with dreambeaches and a tight lineup including visionary MC extraordinaire Hop Hop, psychedelic rockers Bold Folly, and garage rocker Jack (aka Brittany Costa). Tickets are $10, which includes a hard copy of the EP if you’re into that sort of thing, and doors open at 8pm. Disappearing Act by dreambeaches

Bold Folly –More Garbage Than Art

Buffalo psychedelic garage rock power trio Bold Folly are back with More Garbage Than Art, a larcenous EP of off-kilter punk jams that always keep you guessing and holding on for dear life right from the start. Between our home grown psychedelic bands (Aircraft, Deadwolf) and the touring variety playing the area over the next few months (Foxygen, Mac DeMarco, Flaming Lips, Roger Waters) Bold Folly’s latest offering is a fascinating entry, exploring the darker aspects of the journey. More Garbage Than Art starts with “Dogfight,”  a pleasant shuffling song with soothing surf rock backing vocals that give way to bloodcurdling howls and crushing punk chaos only to reset itself for the increasingly menacing second verse that goes even further, scraping it’s way to splendor before retreating again. The resulting tension continues to unfold on the bleak and vaguely Sabbathesque “I Wanna,” a tribute to watching TV with the closed captioning on in the background while[...]

Tonight: Francie Moon

Fans of garage indie-rock will be treated to a solid bill tonight. Two local groups will be joining New Jersey singer-songwriter Francie Moon at Mohawk Place. The three acts offer an array of DIY sounds sure to get you grooving. Francie Moon blends elements of rock, surf and punk for an effervescent basement sound. She’ll be hitting the stage with her full band, fresh off the release of her moody, ambient, and fuzz dripped record So This Is Life. Buffalo’s Bold Folly are a cavernous psych rock group who put out two new singles this year, highlighting their marriage of lo-fi and gritty music. Rounding out the evening will be rockers The Sofa Kingz. Show starts at 8, with tickets for $5.

Tonight: Bold Folly

Broncho might have stiffed local fans tonight but a night of solid local music still awaits later at the Mohawk featuring psych rockers Bold Folly, dreambeaches, and Mr. Boneless. Bold Folly’s been cultivating an alluring sound that’s part Gene Pitney on acid, part unhinged rockabilly, and part bluesy space rock for a year or so, releasing the EP Queen City Tuesday in March. dreambeaches approach their satisfying take on psychedelic pop in a way that recalls fun Peter Gabriel from the mid 80’s, the Beach Boys, and Vampire Weekend, while Mr. Boneless brings a distinctly Flaming Lips vibe to their vaguely country rock sound. Taken together there’s a possibility your brains might be running out your noses by the end of the night… in a good way. Show begins at 8pm, and cover is $5.

Tonight: Dreambeaches

Sunny Buffalo-based indie rock act, Dreambeaches, will be celebrating their EP release, titled Habits, tonight at Nietzsche’s. The baroque-rs have been on the scene for over a year, so waiting this long for an EP is rare in an era of home recordings. From what I’ve heard, this release is well worth the wait.  Also on the bill are synth-pop outfit Humble Braggers, psych-pop band Mooses, and cave-rock band Bold Folly. Doors open at 9pm and there is a $5 cover.

Tonight: New Madrid

One of the exciting thing about Town Ballroom’s recent Leopard Lounge shows is that it has provided the perfect venue for some of indie rock’s rising stars or best kept secrets. The latter is especially true of tonight’s guest, New Madrid. It’s almost difficult to describe the sound of these Athens-based indie rockers because they almost seem to pull inspiration from every major era of indie rock and do so with a sound that’s effortless and immediate. Given their hometown, it’s maybe too easy to label that as “College Rock” but if any band in recent memory deserves that label it’s them. Yet the band also seem to carry with them the lazy slacker rock vibes of the early 90s as much as the wandering experimental rock of the early 2000s. New Madrid sounds immediately familiar but like no one specifically, which in itself is an incredible feat. The band arrives[...]
