Tonight: The Slums

Put out a single, play a show… That’s exactly what Buffalo’s dirtiest, grimiest, and all-around badass-iest band The Slums are doing tonight. In an effort to flip our new president a gigantic bird, they’ve decided to donate all the money raised by tonight’s gig to Planned Parenthood. Joining The Slums in their middle-finger salute are the raucous indie surf punx in Slowcooker and the emotionally heavy male/female dynamics of honey COMA. ICYMI, check out “KREB” below so you can sing along. Later on, come hang out and let your middle fingers fly at the Modeling Factory at 7pm… Ask a friend for the address.

Tonight: Tokyo Police Club

One of Canada’s prized indie outfits is soon to be at our doorsteps this evening when Tokyo Police Club play the Waiting Room. Whether you love the odd drums and fuzzy bass of “Nature of the Experiment” or the general warm tenacity of Melon Collie and the Infinite Radness Pts 1 & 2, Tokyo Police Club have the musical chops to impress and entwine. Collectively, TPC is a band standing the test of time offering their listeners tasty, increasingly pop treats. Their new tendency to go pop bodes well as the band continues to write simple, loving tunes that fill your heart with joy. Supporting TPC is Charly Bliss, a sludgy, rock act from New York City. Their latest single, “Turd” (which is about denying a relentless catcaller), the group produces a somewhat grungy, 1-2-3-4 rokker. Doors start at 7pm and tickets are $23 walk-in. Tonight: PineSheets

New year, new doom ‘n’ gloom…and I mean it in the best way. PineSheets had me reeling after an enigmatic set at Mohawk Place last year and I couldn’t quite put my finger on why at the time. The solo project is headed by Joseph Vita, an Albany native who released a full length, Parade, under the PineSheets moniker this past month. The album is sparse, dark and a little seductive. The most intriguing component is how non-linear each song reveals itself to be. On first listen through, Parade doesn’t make immediate sense. Not all of the lyrics are discernible, there’s no obvious song structure, and not a ton of predictable melodies are used. The pith of these songs, however, is not the immediacy or the configuration. To me, it’s the play on quotidian ambiance. It’s like soundscape commentary for the day-to-day downer in all of us. There is also something so oddly comforting[...]

Tonight: Little Baltimore Christmas Extravanza

Tonight get your groove on  while keeping Christmas weird at Little Baltimore’s Christmas Extravaganza featuring The Curls. The dreamy Chicago indie dance pop outfit (think Siouxsie and the Banshees meets Talking Heads) will be joined by garage pop duo Suburbs, the cranked up Strokes goodness of Ugly Suns, Brimstone Blondes frontman Matthew Danger Lippman, with a DJ set by Allen Nieves to wrap it all up nice. Show starts at 8pm, bring $3 for the visiting Curls along with Christmas cookies, beer and what have you.

Tonight: Tyler Mendola

Milkie’s is set to feature three Buffalo-based musicians performing stripped down acoustic sets. Set to play tonight is Tyler Mendola, from the retro, psychedelic Deadwolf-pack. His music is sure to swoon, and his performance should shine new light upon what is typically expected of the frontman. Supporting Mendola are Yes Yes and Elliot Douglas (M.A.G.S.): Yes Yes (Michael Ersing) is a unique, Xiu Xiu-esque take on the singer-songwriter stance with and Elliot Douglas is a local garage rocker also turning to the face’s acoustic cheek. Word on the street is he may be doing some Malones covers. Doors are at 9pm and there is a $5 cover. Stream Deadwolf’s “Shine” below. Tonight: Green Slime

Tonight, Milkies on Elmwood will be hosting a short, sweet show showcasing three local acts.  Freshly formed fuzzed out rock two piece, Green Slime, are on the bill, and are sure to rip through plenty of tracks of their great Self Titled release, which came out this September.  Also featured on the bill are lo fi punk two piece, Space is Haunted, fresh off of the release of a new album, titled Contact.   The show will be rounded out by indie psych act Chevron Bloom. Doors open at 8pm and admission is only $5.  Small price to pay for a stacked gig.

Tonight: Shana Falana

Kingston, NY-based sparkle-pop duo, Shana Falana is set to make a stop on their national tour tonight at Nietzsche’s. In support of their latest release, Here Comes the Wave (Team Love Records), the duo consisting of Shana Falana and Mike Amari blend ambient dream-pop melodies with a lush indie rock backing. Also on the bill are the ever-evolving psych-pop trio, The Tins, baroque indie rockers, dreambeaches, and up front is looptastic Matt Script. Doors are at 9pm with a $5 cover.

Tonight: Rubblebucket

Of the handful of bands that I consistently recommend seeing live, Rubblebucket has held a spot on my list since I first saw them in 2014. I’m convinced that most upbeat, dance groove-driven bands translate well to a crowd of people in terms of energy, but man oh man, does this one take energetic to a whole new level. Granted, there are always 5+ members in the Brooklyn-based outfit, a beefed up horn section, and sometimes an eccentric full-bodied, faceless flower mascot comes out and stage to boogie. Sounds wild, right? Even still, the band is incredibly tight and will absolutely captivate you musically, if not visually. Since re-branding themselves under the name Rubblebucket in 2008, the band has put out 7 official releases (with a brand new one on the way!). They haven’t quite reached household name status, but it’s clear that wildly huge success is not the end-all[...]

Tonight: Jake Bellissimo

Jake Bellissimo is an indie folk virtuoso of sorts. With an easy voice and angelic string compositions, his creations swarm your mind like a flurry of furry, friendly bees. His latest work, Piece of Ivy, is a collection of acoustic songs of quality recording. This musician is certainly talented and is slated for an up-close setup tonight at Dreamland. Supporting Bellissimo are locals Velvet Bethany and Bill Nehill. Velvet Bethany is a solid acoustic performer shooting you with a touch of 60s and grunge rock. Bill Nehill turns down the lights with his stripped down honest tunes. Fun starts about 8pm and donate $5 or pay what you can in order to support the space/art.

Tonight: Taking Back Saturday (Vol. IV)

Tonight Milkie’s plays host to our quarterly-ish installment of emo night, a night where you get to re-live your trips to the mall and dive headfirst back into your Live Journal. This session features four DJs taking over three slots: Derek Neuland (BuffaloShows.net), brothers Cory and Brett Perla (The Public/Mutual Friends), and Jon Coric (The Traditional). Expect a healthy mix of your standard emo tracks (Taking Back Sunday, Fall Out Boy) tosome deeper cuts from The Promise Ring or The Anniversary. Doors are at 9pm with a $5 cover. Try not to cry (too hard).

Tonight: Beams

Tonight the Mohawk hosts a night of ambitious indie rock when fey folk rockers Beams comes to town. Shimmery, delicate, and haunting, the Toronto natives deliver a sound rich in hypnotic rhythms and exotic harmonies, and their cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” soars. Opening the show will be local experimenters Lifemusic mit Andre and Little Cake. Doors open at 8pm and cover is $5. Tonight: We Are Scientists

Brooklyn-based indie rockers, We Are Scientists, are slated to play Buffalo’s Studio at Waiting Room this evening for an undoubtably great kick off to a post-Thanksgiving work week. The band, which has been going strong for 15+ years, found their big break with 2006’s With Love and Squander. We Are Scientists post-punk/indie pop styling with a comedic edge is incredibly catchy and engaging and not to be missed. If you are a fan of The Wombats, The Futureheads, or even The Tins for a local spin, then this show is for you.  Doors at 7pm with a $15 cover. Arrive early to catch sets from local openers Stress Dolls and Feverbox.

Tonight: Sammus

Thanksgiving holiday weekends in Buffalo really are a war of attrition beginning Wednesday and running through Saturday and into Sunday. Dreamland isn’t done yet however, hosting an evening of experimental/underground hip hop from Upstate New York featuring Ithaca’s Sammus along with Buffalo’s Hop Hop and We Stole The Show. Sammus (aka Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo) is a virtuoso behind and in front of the boards and an intellectual heavyweight, so be prepared to dance and ponder many, many things while enjoying material from her debut album Pieces In Space. Doors open at 6pm, music begins at 7pm, and admission is $6 or whatever you can pay (but don’t be stingy). Pieces in Space by Sammus

Tonight: Dance Yrself Clean: A Hipster Dance Party

Are you searching for an opportunity to burn off that third round of Thanksgiving helpings? Well look no more because Milkie’s has the event for you. This evening DJs Nick Muldoon, Bryan Johnson, Allison Lavis, and Ben Parsons will be delivering today’s hits and yesterdays favorites of 2000s to present scenester must-haves. Expect spins from LCD Soundsystem (obviously), Jamie XX, Grimes, Phoenix, and many many more. Event starts at 9pm with a $5 cover. You probably will want to wear something cool.

Tonight: Candy Ambulance

Well, you made it through Monday.  What better way to celebrate than with a super stacked Tuesday night gig?  Grunge-y alt rock act Candy Ambulance from Saratoga Springs will be making the trek to Dreamland in Buffalo tonight, playing along side some key Buffalo acts.  Tight indie-emo band,Passed Out, will be kicking the show off, with raucous rock act, M.A.G.S., and  new Buffalo slowcore act Honey Coma closing out. The Facebook event has no price for the show listed, but bring at least 5 bucks for the touring band to be safe.  Things are set to kick off at 8pm and will be over by 11pm.
