Tonight: MAGS and The Slums Double Release Show

You might want to clear up your schedule and head down to Mohawk Place tonight.  Two great local acts, MAGS and the Slums, are both dropping new projects today, and are having one big party to celebrate.  MAGS are dropping their first full length on Admitrable Traits Records, titled M.A.G.S., and the Slums are putting out their final(??) EP, titled Bloodsucker. If I were you, I’d show up early because this one will probably be packed. Buffalo’s own Humble Braggers will be kicking things off, and Albany’s Jouska will also be returning to Buffalo to perform. Doors open at the Mohawk at 8PM, and it is $12 at the door.  Admission comes with one free MAGS CD, and the first 50 people though the door get a free “mystery swag bag” via The Slums. Tonight: Dan Tedesco

Tonight, the 9th Ward will be hosting Iowan singer/songwriter Dan Tedesco sponsored by Community Beerworks. Tedesco is a tad edgier than your average singer/songwriter with candid folk songs packed with unapologetic lyrics of an edgier lifestyle. The Iowan musician paints a portrait that gives a nod to Townes Van Zandt while maintaining his own identity. Prior to performing, Tedesco will be showing his film, “Chasing The Light,” featuring himself and giving an insight on what it’s like to be an independent musician as he plays through the countryside. Tickets are $15 with 7pm doors. Written by Lucy Bell

Tonight: Cheap Pop

Deep Space 8 is set to host Bethlehem, Pennsylvania’s most popular professional wrestling themed band, Cheap Pop, this evening. As an outspoken indie rock fan and a semi-closeted wrestling lover, it’s rare these two worlds collide on my interests Venn Diagram, but Cheap Pop manages to tick both boxes. For those of you that aren’t giant wrestling nerds, the term Cheap Pop is a wrestling term for when a good guy wrestler says/expresses something that is meant to get the crowd to cheer ie) talking about how great the Sabres are, or being happy to be back in BUFFALO, NY. Cheap Pop are no fair weather fans either. Their 2016 release In Gorilla (a production position at a wrestling event behind the curtain) is chock full of accessible punk rock tracks with insider references that will most likely go above the non-fan’s head, but will without a doubt be quirky and[...]

Tonight: Sheer Mag

Philadelphia punk band Sheer Mag takes over tonight at the Mohawk with Lost Balloons and Mallwalkers. If rock is indeed the new punk, Sheer Mag and their magnificent front woman Tina Halladay has it turned up to 11, taking the proto cock rock of the 70’s and the DIY ethos and abandon of punk to the hungry masses minus the misogyny and nascent dude bro connotations endemic of 70’s hard rock and it’s cultural legacy to create something meaningful, righteous and vital for today’s increasingly diverse audiences. In town in support of the their very buzzworthy debut LP Need To Feel Your Love and one of the subjects of a New York Times feature on women in rock over the weekend, this is Sheer Mag’s time… and a big get for the Mohawk and for local audiences. Opening the show will be Madison Wisconsin’s Lost Balloons flying the flag for the international garage[...]

BLEEDERS

Tonight: Bleeders

Tonight Deep Space 8 will be home to a chaotic night of jams when Bleeders come through town. Bleeders are a feminist punk band out of Kutztown, PA and are coming off their latest release, We Hate Men. They are a group you got to experience live as their profound energy isn’t something to pass on.  Playing alongside Bleeders for the night are hardcore punks, Radiation Risks, Matthew Danger Lippman, and Grain Assault. Doors at 7pm. Donations of $5 for the touring band. WE HATE MEN by BLEEDERS

Tonight: Sunday Brunch

Don’t be confused when you see the words “Sunday Brunch” – despite what it may seem, buffaBLOG is still a music-based blog (sorry foodies). The Sunday Brunch we’re referring to is actually a Buffalo-based post-hardcore quartet specializing in cathartic, gravely-voiced jams via their latest offering, the aptly-named Eat Your Heart Out. They’re sharing the stage tonight with Philly alt-rockers Slophouse and the space-case indie rock duo sheds. Milkie’s is the place to be tonight. Bring $5 and show up at 8pm to catch all the music. Quick reminder that Milkie’s is 21+ for any of you youngins out there. Eat Your Heart Out by Sunday Brunch

Tonight: Dance Yrself Clean

Tonight hot downtown eatery Marble and Rye will be the scene of the latest  Dance Yrself Clean Hipster Dance Party, where you can Resist the night away getting down to the latest and greatest booty shaking indie jams, brought to you by the usual suspects: Alison Lavis (editor of Highlights magazine), Ben Parsons, Tom (Humble Braggers/Girl Jeans) Burtless, Nick Muldoon, and Bryan Johnson (of the Family and Mutual Friends). The good and just cause that you will be dancing for and the beneficiary of your $5 donation will be the National Center For Transgender Equality. The tunes starts at 10pm.

Tonight: Big Huge

Tonight Sugar City will be the scene of a glorious power rock revival the likes of which has not been seen in a long time when New York City’s Big Huge makes their local debut. Taking the tight songwriting, unadulterated fun and crisp riffage of 80’s Top 40 rock while amputating the corporate slickness and replacing it with proper DIY downtown rock bravado, Big Huge feels just right, especially as showcased on their tasteful but kick ass debut LP Cruel World. Opening the show will be local punks Uniform(OPR), avante garde noise rockers Welks Mice, and psychedelic punk rockers Slow Mutants. Doors open at 8pm with music starting promptly at 8:30pm to honor Sugar City’s curfew and their neighbors. Cover is $7-$10 depending what you can kick in. CRUEL WORLD by BIG HUGE

Tonight: Rick Maguire from Pile

Head down to Sugar City tonight to catch a short and sweet showcase featuring some stellar songwriters. Over the years, Rick Maguire has made numerous stops in Buffalo, mainly with his main project, Pile. While Rick is the front man of Pile, he has also been writing solo tracks since the late 2000’s, around the time when Pile formed. Tonight would be a great night to catch the amazing songwriter perform some of the more low key Pile tracks, along with some of his deep solo cuts. New Hampshire indie folk act, Footings, are also featured on the bill as well. Fresh off of the release of a fantastic new LP, the three piece’s set is not to be missed. The show will be opened with two sets from two Buffalo artists, David Adamczyk, a violinist/composer, along with folk songstress Laura Buckley. The show kicks off at Sugar City at 7pm, and its $7[...]

Tonight: Hello Shark

Sometimes you just need an off-the-beaten-path, genre-defying show to cap off your weekend… If that’s the case, we know we’ll see you at Milkie’s tonight. Philly sad-boy Hello Shark will be jamming his literate, casio-driven poetry tonight alongside the literal caveman proto-punk of Boston’s The Cavemen. Local support is also aplenty, with applicable sets from vox & vibes duo Welks Mice, the ever-creative Lesionread Jazz Band, and a debut performance from Slinky X. Doors for tonight’s show are at 7pm. Bring $5 so you can get in the door.

Tonight: Downtown Boys

Sugar City is set to host an all-star line-up headlined by one of Sub Pop’s latest signees, Downtown Boys. The Providence, RI funk punk act is touring in support of their latest album released just last week, Cost of Living. Also on the bill are fellow funk punkees Mallwalkers, harsh rockers Alpha Hopper, and rising locals Social Divorce. I can’t think of a better way to spend a Wednesday evening. Show is jam-packed and ends by 10pm, so get there early. 6pm doors with a $7+ cover. Cost of Living by Downtown Boys

Tonight: Ugly Sun

A night of heavy and hard charged music is in store for visitors to Sewing Souls Studios. Ugly Sun headlines a set of four acts in celebration of the release of their new EP Painted Post, with support from two up-and-coming  local groups and touring rockers Retirement Party. Ugly Sun’s offers a brand alt rock dripping with grunge and garage rock influences. Covering the pop punk side of things are both Buffalo’s Super American and Chicago’s Retirement Party. Cooler specializes in the emo realm, with layers of indie and fuzz. Things kick off at 7:30pm, with a $5 charge at the door. If you’re over 21, the event is BYOB (no glass). Painted Post by Ugly Sun

Tonight: Humble Braggers

Nietzsche’s is set to host a night of up-and-coming acts tonight for undoubtedly a well-rounded show set to the brim with local talent. Set to headline is mysterious art rock project from the minds that brought us Well Worn Boot, Smokin’ Black Tar. The band is still in its infancy and has not released any recorded material yet. Also on the docket are local electro pop trio Humble Braggers, who by this point you should be very familiar with by reading our blog. Poughkeepsie-based chamber rock act The Warp/The Weft will be making their Buffalo debut as the opener on the back stage. The band is touring in support of their new album Mapping an Absence which came out at the end of July.  Sprinkled in with performances in the front are the avant garde act Green Schwinn. Doors are at 9pm with a $5 cover. I Know Better, I’m[...]

Tonight: SLUGS

Rochester by way of Los Angeles trippy as hell slackrock outfit SLUGS will be laying down their enigmatic vibes tonight  when they return to Mohawk Place. Founded by brother-sister combo Marissa and James Longstreet, the two were staples in the Rochester music scene, performing under their electro-pop project High Drags. SLUGS is a bit of a change in pace from the hyper pop earlier workings, but still on par in substance. Also on the bill are Slowcooker along with tuneful post punkers Passed Out and garage rock duo Space Is Haunted. Doors are at 7pm and cover is $6. Bedroom Attempts by SLUGS

Tonight: Floral Print

Tonight, an eclectic array of musicians is slated to play Sewing Souls Studios. The fashion & costume design studio and multipurpose venue will host a night of quirky and experimental music. Five different acts will be gracing the stage, four of which are from the WNY area. Headlining the night is Floral Print, an experimental rock band from Atlanta, Georgia presenting elements of pop psych jazz and indie in a deconstructed manner. Buffalo native Little Cake (Ana Vafail) is an eccentric project combining classical, pop, comedy and spoken word with a show tunes inflection. Jesse Kaufman is a dark electronic and noise artist hailing from the West Side. Rounding out the evening are Patrick Weil’s lo-fi soul project Ex-Pat and Marilla based lizard rockers Planet Three. Doors are at 7pm with music starting at 8. There is a $3-$5 suggested donation at the door. running joke & alice arm by[...]
