Tonight: The Curls

Squeeze the last drop out of your weekend with a show hosted at Electric Avenue in Buffalo tonight. Topping the bill and fresh off last month’s Pitchfork Festival are Windy City art-rockers, The Curls. This amorphous musical ensemble experiments with psychedelic bubblegum melodies and some of the quirkiest sounds you’ll ever hear. The tie-dye outcomes are all-out fun and catchy listens that will swirl inside your head for days. Come check out their amazing live performance which was has been compared to St. Vincent, Frank Zappa and the almighty Talking Heads. Need anymore convincing than that? Tonight: Lancer

Gravel-voiced pop-punk trio Lancer are reuniting tonight for what promises to be a fun-filled evening of reminiscing and nostalgia. Their 2013 six-song EP, Don Is Rich, was a then-buffaBLOG favorite, full of great pop hooks, gigantic choruses, irreverent lyrics, and youthful energy. They’re joined tonight by fellow Edenite-turned-Buffalonian Sonny Baker, the always-entertaining indiemo act Passed Out, and recently rebranded Venus Vacation (formerly known as Major Arcana). Tonight: Accidental Fest

The day is finally here. It’s a punk Christmas in Buffalo tonight as the Accidental Fest goes down at The Mickiewicz Polish Library, the same spot where Torn Space Theatre puts on their performances. The venue is the perfect spot to house the absolute chaos that erupts when 10 different bands, 6 out of town touring bands and 4 local acts, all gather together under one roof. Coming from St. Louis are weirdo pop stars BB Eye; Janitor Scum from Calgary, Alberta; Big Ups and Meneka from NYC; Pandemix from Boston, and Spell Runner out of Albany. Local powerhouses Radiation Risks will be representing Buffalo alongside Tines,  and Becca Ryskalczyk. This won’t be a show you will want to miss. Doors are at 5:30pm and it’s $10 at the door.

Tonight: Greet Death

Flint, MI trio Greet Death is making their way to Buffalo tonight to bring their shoegazy goodness to the legendary Mohawk Place stage. Joining them are Cursive’s 15 Passenger act Campdogzz, who will also be making their Buffalo debut. Local support tonight comes in the form of an intimate and emotional solo set from scene veteran Bill Nehill and punk rock up-and-comers Velvet Bethany. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place at 8pm. Bring at least $7 to adequately support the touring bands.

Tonight: Prince Vs Bowie Dance Party

Dearly beloved and fellow pretty things, tonight we will be gathering to celebrate two of our greatest icons, Prince and David Bowie with one of the best dance parties of the year. Transmission Dance Party’s Bill Page and Xotec will be spinning all the hottest jams from both oeuvres for Americans young and old and the scary monsters (no super creeps, please), and with performances from Eddie Gomez, Seraphine DuMaul, Anatomy + Lady Zilla of the Hell’s Harlots, Stella Virgin and Fly Guy Shawn, the Mohawk will definitely be a rave unto the joy fantastic. In keeping with the ongoing theme of Buffalo dance parties raising money for righteous causes, proceeds from the Prince Vs Bowie Dance Party will be going to Planned Parenthood, and please note, any nonsense (fighting, inappropriate behavior, anything non consensual) will get you thrown out. Tonight: What Cheer? Brigade

Mohawk Place hosts a hotly anticipated hodgepodge show of wonderfully unique music that promises to be the biggest party in Buffalo tonight. Headlining and making a stop on their summer march up the Northeast is the awe-inspiring, What Cheer? Brigade. More rock n roll than marching band, this twentyish piece badass brass collective from Providence, RI is going to change your life; you just don’t know it yet. Nothing can prepare you for the exhilarating energy and happiness of blasting trumpets, bellowing trombones, pounding percussion and crashing cymbals so don’t even bother. Just show up and experience a spectacular set you won’t soon forget. Adding some moody and unplugged rhythm and blues to the evening is Buffalo songstress, Curtis Lovell. Lovell’s moving voice will set your soul on fire as she harmonizes over simplistic beats layered with choruses and handclaps. Check her out for a perfectly intimate and communal performance.[...]

Jeff Rosenstock Live Mohawk Place

Do you like punk? Do you like throwing your body into any and everything? Then you won’t want to miss Jeff Rosenstock as he stops by Buffalo’s Mohawk Place. Some may know Rosenstock as the lead songwriter for Bomb the Music Industry!. He is currently on tour with a collection of blazing tracks. Of note is his latest release, Post-,a driving power-pop anthem rock journey into the mind of one of our great songwriters and performers. Sharing the night with Jeff will be Sean Bonnette from AJJ and Worries from Brooklyn. This is going to be a packed show. Doors at 7pm and it’s sold out. 

Tonight: Brendan Canning DJ Set

This week has been sensory overload for all local indie music fans with a four day stretch of highly anticipated shows starting Wednesday with Jenny Lewis and staying strong through tongiht’s Broken Social Scene set headlining Cobblestone Live. The afterparty tonight features Brendan Canning, founding member of BSS, playing an eclectic DJ set tonight at Mohawk Place with deep indie rock cuts and reggae sprinkled. Opening the night is DJ Tight Mike Moretti with an upbeat indie dance set. If you’re coming in cold it’s a $13 cover with a hard start at 11pm. If you have a Cobblestsone Live ticket, $10.

Tonight: Fleet Foxes

The western New York music lovers week of plenty continues tonight when beloved indie folk rock band Fleet Foxes brings their exceptional harmonies to Artpark with up and coming London indie heroine  Nilufer Yanya. After a five year hiatus the Seattle  band returned with last year’s Cracked Up, their third album and first with new drummer Neal Morgan, replacing that guy who played Canalside last night. Meanwhile, every note  jazzy and sweetly soulful London guitarist and vocalist Nilufer Yanya sings and plays floats effortlessly as if in a dream. Tickets for this dream show are still available for $41, doors open at 5pm, and show allegedly starts at 6:30pm.

Tonight: Giant Peach

Self-proclaimed diarycore/wraithcore act Giant Peach will be hitting up Mohawk Place today. The trio has just released But You Made Me Such A Beautiful Thing, a sprawling, sonic evolution for the Brooklyn act, who have traded out their raw indie-punk sound for something more subtle – think Rainer Maria or Hop Along. Joining them are noisy Montreal janglers DBPS, and a stacked local lineup featuring Slow Cooker and Slinky X. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place at 8pm. Tonight: Past Life

Philly’s indie rock sweethearts Past Life breeze through Buffalo tonight with a stacked lineup at Sugar City. The four-piece is currently riding the wave of their recently released EP The Loudest Sound, featuring their stalwart single “Apollo” at the forefront. Banding together in the city of brotherly love, Past Life’s music has a connectivity that boasts of childhood camaraderie and intuition, even with just two years as a band under their belt. Meeting wispy falsetto with bleary distortion and spirited group vocals, these headliners promise a kinetic show saturated in guitar rock and sweat. Past Lives are joined on tour with Montreal’s Molly Drag, whose dismal crooning takes a page out of the Teen Suicide-Dandelion Hands book. Michael Hansford’s dusky melodies and morose lyricism provide a form of catharsis that gradually lulls you into introspection, which will likely be found on his upcoming album Thumper, out this September. Tonight: Father John Misty

The Earth, stars, and various festival touring schedules have aligned to bring us one of the most fascinating Thursday at Canalside shows in a few years when zeitgeist channeling troubadour Father John Misty returns to our area at last tonight. It’s been a few years since he last brought the Town Ballroom house down and even more since his now quasi-legendary performance opening for Youth Lagoon back in magical 2012, so tonight’s show has more than a little anticipation going on as the ever entertaining and incisive Mr. Tillman brings his festival set in support of his latest effort God’s Favorite Customer to our suds and summer concert series. Be sure to get to Canalside in time for the opener, Richmond, VA by way of Nashville indie heroine Lucy Dacus, whose expansive and evocative sophomore album Historian is currently burning it up on Matador Records. Tonight: Jenny Lewis

Celebrated singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis is making a stop in Buffalo tonight. Gracing the stage at Babeville (Asbury Hall), she’ll be bringing along two decades worth of influential music. Initially starting out as a member of indie rock favorites Rilo Kiley, Lewis has gone on to have an acclaimed solo career. In addition, she has appeared on projects by artists ranging from The Postal Service to Ryan Adams, as well as both acting and writing music for several films. Her most recent solo record, The Voyager, was released in 2014. Opening up the show is NYC-based artist Cut Worms, the project of Chicagoan Max Clarke. Their debut LP was released this year via Jagjaguwar. Tickets are $30 at the door with doors opening at 7pm, music at 8pm.

Tonight: Zigtebra

Electric Avenue hosts an eclectic night tonight which will be the music destination for downtown Buffalo. Topping the bill, and making a stop on their exhaustive US tour, is the dancey Chicago synthpop duo, Zigtebra. Creative partners Emily Rose and Joe Zeph will get your body moving with their quirky, diary-entry love songs overcast with sparkling melancholia. Everything may seem like rainbows and butterflies with bubbly synth beats and Rose’s warm, romantic vocals, but below the surface, there’s longing and heartache. It’s what makes Zigtebra so authentic and appealing. If you like dancing and have a heart, you won’t want to miss these two. Sharing the spotlight will be Buffalo’s freshest alternative folk act, Heave. Song writer Emily Finlan’s gorgeous and moody voice entwines with awesomely atmospheric instruments to create superb alt-ballads your ears need to ear. Super fun Brooklyn glam punks Big Huge make a welcome return to the Queen City tonight at the newly air conditioned Sugar City with Sofa Kingz, Party’s Over and DJ Fluffybody. Their show last August was a bonafide, life affirming gas, so you don’t want to miss this one, and with up and coming local indie pop outift The Sofa Kingz and Queen City Music Lottery survivors  Party’s Over representing for the area with some tight beats from DJ Fluffybody it’s going to be a good party.
