In The Valley Below at the Tralf Music Hall (10/20/15)

After playing at both Kerfuffle and UB’s Springfest, In The Valley Below returned to play their first headlining show in Buffalo at the Tralf Music Hall this past Tuesday. The LA duo played through their 2014 album The Belt, with a set that included their hugely successful songs “Peaches” and “Hymnal.” Opening for ITVB was California-based group Clara-Nova. Joywave at Waiting Room (10/9/15)

A sweltering Waiting Room paid host to the local homecoming of hot as fire electro pop outfit Joywave, making the first of its back-to-back WNY appearances before heading home to Rochester the night after for a rapturous home town gig. Joining the five piece was pop siren Grace Mitchell and rising Roch besties KOPPS. Check out select shots from Friday’s show below, and for a full gallery, click here. KOPPS Grace Mitchell Joywave

Bully at Mohawk Place (09/26/15)

Since the show’s announcement, I have been hyping this past Saturday night’s Bully gig to all of my friends as one of the potentiality best shows of the year, and I was damn near right. Thinking they could properly warm up the crowd for what was to come, the Dead Soft and Heat delivered absolutely incredible sets, but there was nothing that either could do to really prepare you for the Nashville buzz band’s enormous sounding, raucous performance. There are still a few months left this year, but I can already tell that this is going to be on my list of the best shows of 2015.  Check out some photos from the show below, and a full gallery of the night’s shots, click here. Mikal Cronin at Mohawk Place (9/15/15)

As summer comes to a close, I am reminded of all of the incredible shows that come through Buffalo. Last night at Mohawk Place, though, I was greeted with a strong reminder that just because the season is turning over, doesn’t mean the barrage of shows will be stopping any time soon. The Cairo Gang and Calvin Love both played stellar opening sets, and Mikal Cronin and his backing band played an upbeat and indisputably memorable set, spanning his entire catalog. EdgeFest 2015 at the Outer Harbor (9/12/15)

In spite of Saturday’s less than ideal weather, 103.3’s annual Edgefest was hugely successful. Thousands turned out on a dreary day to see the likes of Rise Against, Coheed & Cambria, Modest Mouse, and many other groups as the rain ceased to let up. Local band Made Violent has created quite a fan base over the last couple years and put on a show that seems to ensure its continued success. The trio, who leave for a two week tour of the UK today, managed to set the tone of the show and the other acts followed suit. Edgefest was a show not to be missed, downpour and all. Chon at the Studio at Waiting Room (9/10/15)

I was not expecting the amount of extreme technical proficiency that Chon brought to the stage at the Studio at the Waiting Room on Thursday night. The quartet seamlessly ripped though its entire set list without missing a beat, nailing every single note, leaving the crowd in awe. Regardless of your level of interest in instrumental progressive rock, you really have to hand it to these dudes for the amount of talent the possess. Check out some of the photos from the show below.  Click here for a full gallery. Chon

60 Percent: Fat Wreck Chords Celebrates 25 Years

Believe it or not, Punk in Drublic is not NOFX’s best album. Actually, their best material was released between 1997 and 2006, a hot streak starting with So Long And Thanks For All The Shoes and capped off with the underrated Wolves In Wolves Clothing. Before and after this period, the band released some good albums with great songs but nothing that demonstrated the cohesion, quality, and subtle experimentation of the four studio albums and several EP’s (including The Decline and Never Trust A Hippy) released during this time. An integral part of NOFX’s history is Fat Wreck Chords, the independent punk rock label run by frontman Fat Mike and Erin Burkett, his now ex-wife. I won’t go into great detail about the label’s history, but interested parties should check out the CBC’s recent interview with Fat Mike and for a great interview with Erin Burkett head over to Damian of Fucked Up’s podcast. This year, the label[...]

Mac DeMarco at the Tralf Music Hall (8/16/15)

This past Sunday, the sweetheart we all deserve, Mac Demarco, treated Buffalo to yet another intimate, sold out show at the Tralf Music Hall. This time around, Mac brought with a full band, and played seven of the eight tracks off of his newest release, Another One. DeMarco’s charisma was in full effect, as was his entire band’s, delivering a performance that kept the audience smiling the whole time. Check out our photos of the show below. The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die

In case you need any affirmation that emo is not dead, last night at Waiting Room was a strong reminder. All of the bands on last night’s bill brought their A game, all playing fantastic, on point sets. Take One Car opened the night with their heavy, talk rock oriented jams, followed by a lighthearted, mellow set from Virginia Beach’s Turnover. Pianos Become the Teeth found the perfect mix between mellow and extreme, delivering an incredibly passionate performance. Closing the night was The World is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, delivering another emotional set. Despite the heavy performance, the tone of the night was not too serious, as it wouldn’t be a World Is Beautiful set without an excessive amount of stage banter. Pitchfork Music Festival: Sunday

Just when you thought the day by day lineup of acts couldn’t get any better, Sunday happened. With no rain in sight, the crowd at the final day of the 2015 Pitchfork Music Festival did not hold back in the blistering sun during sets from Viet Kong, Waxahatchee, Caribou, Run the Jewels, Courtney Barnett, and many more. Check out the photos of Sunday’s action below. Pitchfork Music Festival: Saturday

The Pitchfork Music Festival action continued into Saturday, just to be cut short midday by torrential down pouring and high winds. Luckily, the weather only caused a short delay, and gates opened back up to the anxious fest goers. The relentless rain had no effect on their spirits, as I saw of the most passionate and active crowds of the entire festival, almost as if the precipitation had helped in a way. Nearly every set I saw this past Saturday was incredible, but the major standouts were Future Islands and Bully. During both sets, I found myself too busy singing along every word to grab as many pictures as I would have liked. Check out the photos of Saturday’s action below. Pitchfork Music Festival: Friday

With the sun beating down on the growing lines of anxious festival goers and shouts from street vendors selling bottled water, I could see the excitement building within the crowd as the 2015 Pitchfork Music Festival was ready to kick off. As Union Park opened it’s doors, it slowly filled with boisterous music lovers, some running to be first in line at the stages. Musically, some indie’s biggest acts played, including CHVRCHES, Mac Demarco, Panda Bear, and a headlining set from Wilco. Check out the photos of Friday’s day time action below, along with photos from the Official Pitchfork Festival after party at the Subterranean featuring Pinkwash, Tenement, and Waxahatchee. On Tour with Lemuria

Ex-pat photographer and blogger Derek Neuland recently went out on tour with Buffalo rooted pop-punk trio Lemuria. Over the last couple weeks, Newland, a Queen City native who now resides in Kentucky, has been compiling tour essays and photo galleries documenting his time on the road with the band members he calls friends and shared the moments on his blog, Quiet and Constant. He was nice enough to offer us a few unreleased outtakes from his first handful of tour essays, which you can check out below. If you wish to follow Neuland’s travels with the band and check out his on going collection essays and galleries, make sure to keep up with his progress over on his blog. His most recent essay about the band’s visit to LA’s Galco’s Soda Pop Stop was shared last week. Read about it here. Photos by Derek Neuland

Herd Fest 2015: Day 3 (Part 2)

Herd Fest 2015 returned to Allentown Saturday night with three more loaded showcases sprinkled on to the block. With Silo Sessions setting up shop at Nietzsche’s, Quiet Country Audio taking over Duke’s, and the Wax Museum crew manning both rooms in Hardware, the final evening of the 2015 edition of the festival featured something for everyone. Tireless festival photography, Candace Camuglia, was able to capture the evening. Check out some select shots below, and for the full gallery from Day 3’s night time showcases, head over to the festival’s Facebook page.
