Tonight: Inlite (Last Show)

Bummer! Tonight we say goodbye to a longtime contributor to Buffalo’s canon. The Grand Islanders in Inlite are playing their final show, after close to a decade of existence. The Brit-tinged synth-rawkers are sure to put on a wonderful farewell tonight at Mohawk Place. Fans of Franz Ferdinand, The Bravery, or We are Scientists should get their last taste of this outgoing quartet. Support tonight comes from Sleepy Hahas and The Naturalists – what better of a duo to send Inlite off with? Doors are at 8pm and it’s only $5.

Father Baron Releases Debut EP

Strung Way Out is the new EP from the Buffalo crust punk outfit Father Baron. The three piece is no strangers to buffaBLOG – the Crook brothers and Trey Hollowood have been previously seen in impressive Buffalo acts that span multiple genres (think Mandy K, Arctic Death, and Nelson Type). But if you’ve come here expecting jaunty indie rock or dream pop, you should brace yourself. In typical fashion, these dudes have genre-hopped again; Father Baron is about as filthy as it gets. Some other great words to describe the act include (but are not limited to): disgusting, vile, angry, and brutal. Not convinced? Listen below.  

Tonight: Sonny Baker w/Dreambeaches

Free show alert! One of Buffalo’s most prolific musicians, Sonny Baker, will be performing selections off his upcoming, full band EP Flesh It Out later on this evening at Hardware. Baker just shared the EP’s latest track, titled “(underachiever),” earlier this morning. Check it out below. As if that wasn’t enough, the local dream-surfers in Dreambeaches (Humble Braggers’ Corey Bzibziak) will be rounding out the bill. Queen City Cartel are the people to thank for tonight’s wonderful (did we mention free?) showcase – tonight is round six of their biweekly Thursday series in the back room of Hardware. Like we said, there’s no cover tonight. The show is set to start at 10pm, but make sure you are 21+ before you head out the door. We’ll see you all for some drinks and music tonight at Hardware.

Tonight: Pleistocene

Infringement is one hell of a festival, isn’t it? In case you haven’t had your fill, we’d like to bring attention to the showcase at Sugar City tonight, also known as the Sugar City Masquerade Ball. Costumes are encouraged! Obviously we’re a music blog, so we’re here to tell you one of our Rochester faves, the jangle-poppers in Pleistocene, will be kicking off the night right. They’re followed up by Baltimore, MD’s Joseph and the Beasts (who sound like Father John Misty meets Of Montreal), as well as Buffalo stalwarts Like a Panther and Wolf. Pleistocene plays at 7:00 so make sure you get there early! $5 entry, $3 if you have a costume on. Let’s get festive.  

Tonight: Rochester Invasion

As part of Infringement Festival, buffaBLOG has put together a sort of “Rochester Invasion” if you will. We are bringing a bunch of our favorite Rochester bands to Buffalo tonight for a night of music and co-mingling. We’ve curated a genre-spanning selection of some of Rochester’s finest, including: electro-synth masters KOPPS; the powerpoppers in The Demos; surf-tinged garage from Buffalo Sex Change (PS, nice name guys); dreamy 60s-poppers Howlo; all rounded out by Hannah Weidner and the Doorway Talkers. Nietzsche’s is the place to be tonight. The show starts at 9:00pm and is VERY reasonably priced at $5. We Buffalonians will bring the wings to snack on if you Rochester-bros will bring some Kodak film on which to capture our debaucherous night. Ah, unity. See you there.

Animal Sounds Releases New EP

Animal Sounds is an instrumental quartet out of Rochester. The foursome’s new EP, Fling Mingus, is a three-song, funk-tinged adventure through twinkly guitars and interesting rhythms. Since releasing a debut demo last summer, Animal Sounds seems to have ditched some of its funk background for an “indier” sound. Still, “Money Is A Mind Game” is a great example of AS’s genre-defying tunes, blending mathy, Minus the Bear-like emo with a tinge of classic rock like Blue Oyster Cult and a pinch of start/stop fury of a band like Buffalo’s A Hotel Nourishing. Tape Drive (Anthony Del Plato) Posts Debut Song

Anthony Del Plato is a man of many talents. Between his solo work, his collaboration with Brad Kujawski, and even an incredible cover of Stepfriends‘ “Strangers, Friends, and Pictures,” Del Plato has been a consistent fixture on our year end best-of lists. Today we share with you a new project of his: Tape Drive, born out Del Plato’s hopefully temporary inability to mic things up and get loud. Tape Drive is an instrumental electronic project. His first song, simply titled “Untitled Tape,” is two and a half minutes of ambient drums, bells, and soft piano. The track is chilltronica music for fans of The Album Leaf, Telefon Tel Aviv, or The Appleseed Cast. Check it out below.

Pity Sex & Ceremony at Mohawk Place (6/5/15)

I had a very pleasant holiday weekend. The 4th really was a nice night. I drove “home” to Hamburg, lit off some fireworks, and spent the night at my parents like I was a spry teen once again. Truthfully, July 5th had me just as excited as Pity Sex was playing at Mohawk Place. Having consumed approximately five (or eight) Leinenkugel’s Summer Shandies (and a few shots of Goldschlager) the night before, my blood was running thin with gold flecks and citrus-flavored alcohol, but nothing could stop me from making it to Mohawk. By some twisted stroke of fate (no, I don’t want to talk about it), I ended up walking in on Pity Sex already on stage. I’m sure I missed “Wind Up” and “When You’re Around” (heartbreaking), but I was able to catch a decent portion of the band’s set. The first complete song I caught was “Acid Reflux” off[...]

Aircraft Releases Music Video for New Single “Dig A Little Deeper”

Aircraft has been paying its dues for quite some time now, especially after 2013’s debut LP Sonic Boom made some waves in the Buffalo scene and cemented the four-piece as both great songwriters and nuanced psych-poppers. Two years later, the group is about to release its follow up, an EP titled 7 Gems from the Sparkling Void. Yesterday saw the premiere of the EP’s first single, “Dig A Little Deeper,” via Pure Volume, and today, the track’s music video has debuted. The aptly-titled seven-song release is a perfect representation of Aircraft’s ethereal, occasionally surf-tinged space rock and is bound to propel the band to heights unknown. Local dynamo label Admirable Traits will be releasing 7 Gems from the Sparkling Void on August 28th, while the band’s release show is tentatively scheduled for August 29th with Rochester favs Pleistocene and new rock-saviors, Sixties Future. Tonight: Roz and the Rice Cakes

No, we’re not talking about the delicious and health-conscious snack – in fact, one of Rhode Island’s best is gracing Buffalo tonight (need proof? click here). Roz and the Rice Cakes is a tight three-piece that sound like the brainchild of Warpaint and Phantogram. The trio has been on tour supporting its latest release, a double A-side out now on Team Love Records. What a perfect dreary Saturday for show-going! Support tonight comes from garage-poppers M.A.G.S., Thee Oh Seas meets Primus-fuzz Kharlos, and the mysterious Alien Three. Ask a punk where the Glitterbox is and make sure you bring a donation for the touring band. Doors open at 6pm and doors close at 10pm sharp.

Metric

If any of our readers are avid listeners of 102.1 or 107.7, you are probably familiar with Metric, a band that has evolved into a cornerstone of the alternative format. Having formed in Toronto, the Canadian alt-synth-poppers have been Buffalo favorites since their breakout debut in 2003. Over the past decade, frontwoman Emily Haines and co. have scored several great hits, including (but definitely not limited to): “Combat Baby,” “Help I’m Alive,” “Gimme Sympathy,” and “Gold, Guns, Girls.” Tonight, Metric is playing quite the gig. They are opening for the kings of dad-rock, Imagine Dragons… On the bright side, guests won’t have to suffer through their 5000th listen of “Radioactive” before catching what is sure to be a great set from Metric. The show is at the First Niagara Center, doors are at 6pm, and tickets are $59.50, $49.50, and $29.50. We’re so excited, our hearts are beating like a hammer!

Quiet Country Audio

For the second year in a row, our buddies over at Quiet Country Audio have curated a wonderful showcase for our Herd Fest festivities… They have handpicked a collection of acts that have worked in or recorded with QCA. Tonight’s show will feature the garage-pop of MAGS and their close, albeit hardcore-influenced buddies in The Slums. Rounding out the evening are the grungemen in The Soft Love, the alt-rockers The Naturalists, and American Low. Just like the rest of Herd Fest, entrance is free with an official Herd Fest wristband. Otherwise, DBGB’s will be collecting a reasonable $5 for your entrance fee. Tonight’s showcase starts at 10:00pm. See you on Allen.

Just Announced: Title Fight

Title Fight is a polarizing band. Their newest record, Hyperview, eschews the melodic hardcore/punk that their fanbase was built upon for chorus-drenched guitars and far-off vocals. But cries of indie-crossover have fallen upon deaf ears here at buffaBLOG, and we’re sure their stop through Buffalo will be a raucous time for punks and shoegazers alike. Rounding out the evening will be a set from the still-buzzing indie wunderkinds in Alex G. The show is all the way out on October 23rd, but sometimes these things tend to sell out. You can grab tickets starting this Friday at 10am for $15 or $17 if you wait until the day of.

The Traditional Posts Somewhere Sessions

Our buddies in The Traditional are in a pretty permanent state of touring. This time around, their travels brought them, well… somewhere, where they performed an acoustic song for the Somewhere Sessions crew. They chose “My Brother Is The Sea” from their debut full-length, How To Live Without Blood, which came out earlier this year on Anchor Eighty Four Records. Of particular note is the group’s innate ability to harmonize over a lone acoustic guitar (see chorus). Check it out below.

Tonight: Humble Braggers

After a dreary day of shopping for flower sprinklers and silhouette cut-outs at the Allentown Art Festival, you’d best find yourself at Mohawk Place this evening. Humble Braggers will be releasing their excellent new EP, Disposable Friends, full of lush synth-heavy tunes a la Passion Pit or Joywave. This release is the next strong contender to come from record label Admirable Traits. Rounding out the night are two newish Buffalo bands, the ex-ICSM led THICK WINTER BLUD and The National-esque Sixties Future, as well as the Rochester synthmasters in Sea Planes. All in all, tonight should be an incredible show. Doors are at 8:00pm and $8 gets you in – don’t forget, that admission price comes with a copy of Disposable Friends.
