Wildhoney at Mohawk Place (05/04/17)

A couple weeks back, Baltimore pop/shoegaze five piece, Wildhoney, returned to Buffalo for yet another fantastic show.  The bands ability to not only create an insane wall of sound, but their ability to keep the music super catchy and interesting were in full effect, coming together to pull off one of the best sets I’ve seen so far this year.  The new tracks that they played sounded incredible live, as did their older releases.  Local emo four piece, Honey., and Albany based pop act, Cannon the Brave, kicked things off, making for a memorable night.  Check out some photos from the show below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. honey Cannon the Brave Wildhoney

After multiple nights of awesome shows over the past week or so, Mohawk Place continues it’s streak with a show from Baltimore’s Wildhoney.  The dream pop tinged shoegaze act has not put out any new music for quite some time, but what they have in their catalog so far is stellar.  Their last LP, Your Face Sideways, came out on Topshelf records in 2015, and is filled with catchy hooks and dreamy undertones from front to back.  As heard in their Audiotree session, I’m sure the band’s massive sound will translate fantastic in a live setting. Buffalo’s own honey and the Good Neighbors will open the show, alongside Albany’s Cannon the Brave.  Tickets are available at the door for $10, and doors are set to open at 8.

Baltimore-based Wildhoney has been pegged as the latest ‘shoegaze’ band, which is a box they quite dislike. While they do incorporate elements of gazing into their tunes, Wildhoney’s melodic trajectories are quite clear, whereas groups like My Bloody Valentine & Slowdive integrate deeper walls of sound and repetitive, other-wordly chords. Wildhoney strays away from drowned out sensations, and creates an upbeat, pop-tinged array. Think 60’s chick bands vibin’ with 80’s bands like The Cure or The Sundays. The elements of shoegaze, therefore, are a stylistic approach to the indie-pop music they classify themselves as. This year, the group put out their first full length LP, called Sleep Through It. Tonight at Mohawk Place: a pretty interesting bill to make your Tuesday feel good. Baltimore’s Wildhoney will be coming through, supported by locals Hot Tip and Alpha Hopper. A good shoegaze band has a knack for bringing out the best in a song by softening the edges, and Wildhoney can definitely do that. There are elements to their newest EP, Seventeen Forever, that I bet are going to tear some people apart live. But at their best, what they’re doing just sounds gorgeous . Hot Tip and Alpha Hopper, as you may know, sound much more aggressive. Check this post and this post for proof. Definitely interested to see how it’ll all play out live, but feeling pretty thumbs up about it. Show starts at 8pm. $5 at the door, which is a steal. Facebook event here for more info.
