Tonight: Bong Wish

Lovers of the tripped out, fantastical British folk music that fired up Led Zeppelin and Donovan simply have to get to Deep Space 8 tonight to check out Bong Wish, just in from the magical woods of ancient Massachusetts to play us some songs from their delightful eponymous debut EP. Rounding out your magical evening will be a stacked bill featuring local art blues rockers be locust or alone, true soldiers of love and good vibrations Welks Mice, and the live debut of lo-fi psych rocker The Midnight Vein (aka John Toohill), who’ll also be celebrating the release of his eponymous debut tonight, as if that wasn’t enough for you already. It’s a pay what you will situation, with a minimum donation of $5 to cover Bong Wish’s gas money, so be cool. Doors open at 7:30pm and music at 8:30pm.

Tonight: California Cousins

Rochester math/emo/punks California Cousins are headlining a Buffalo show tonight in support of a genre-blending tour package definitely worth your attention. Philly’s Caracara are swinging through courtesy of Flower Girl records, bringing their emotional baroque-pop/shoegaze/emo with them. Joining them are Richmond, VA act The Weak Days, who have been accurately described as “emo by association, pop-punk in denial.” Rounding out the show are Buffalo act honey, whose pop-tinged emo always guarantees a good time. Tonight’s show will be at Sugar City. There’s an $8 donation at the door to support the touring bands. Doors are at 6:30 – keep in mind Sugar City is an alcohol-and-drug-free safe space! Tonight: Diet Cig

Tonight is a special night… Typically a powerhouse duo, Diet Cig are touring the US as a quartet, and they are bringing this specially curated lineup to Buffalo tonight for an evening full of peppy indie-pop. The band released the stellar Swear I’m Good At This last year, full of thrashing guitars and singer Alex Luciano’s charming vocals – expect to see a lot of that tonight. Joining them tonight are Glasgow band The Spook School, who are buzzing from the recent release of their third LP, Could It Be Different?. Released just a few days ago, this quartet specializes in shiny, quirky power-pop with a special ear for pop hooks. Also playing tonight are fuzzy three-piece Lala Lala. Tonight: Marigold

Marigold (aka Ben Lieber from Buffalo cosmic rockers Head North) is kicking off a solo tour tonight with a set of acoustic tunes. His songs are emotional and understated, combining the catharsis of bedroom-emo with the warmness and intimacy of an acoustic guitar. Support tonight comes from fellow Buffalonians heave (aka the hushed and ethereal musings of Emily Finlan) and Greg Priester/Mike Rakiecki from heavy-hitters Into the Wake, whose songs translate surprisingly well to the acoustic format. Tonight’s show is at Mohawk Place. Doors are at 7pm, bring $10 to get in. Counterfeit Art (Reprise) by Marigold

Tonight: This Day & Age

In the early to mid 2000s, Tonawanda act This Day & Age were hometown heroes. After inking a record deal with One Eleven records, they released two beloved albums, 2004’s Always Leave The Ground and 2006’s The Bell and the Hammer. Between that time, TD&A evolved from a light-hearted, emo-pop band to a nuanced and jazzy quintet, lush with electric piano and complex arrangements. After a 10+ year absence, they are finally reuniting tonight at the Town Ballroom for a long-overdue revisit to those two albums. Opening up the show are fellow 2006-ers Common Kings, as well as americana-rockers The Eaves and indie-rock mainstay MAGS. Tickets are $20 presale and $25 at the door. Doors are at 6pm, music starts at 7pm.

Lockport rockers Handsome Jack, who recently crushed it opening for Timber Timbre on this very stage will be back to spread their early 70’s rock gospel with Witty Tarbox opening the show with their funky and nihilistic surf rock. Tonight: White Reaper

Ascendant Louisville hard rockers White Reaper headline a killer lineup tonight at the Town Ballroom with Chicago psych rock outfit Post Animal and local garage rock heroes Made Violent. In town in support of their very, very well reviewed sophomore effort The World’s Best American Band, White Reaper will be unleashing their bold, fully loaded and totally kick ass 70’s/80’s rock stylings (minus the problematic baggage) on the willing and eager faithful, while Post Animal returns to play Buffalo twice in one year having melting faces with their Sabbath meets Tame Impala jams at the Tralf in May when they opened for that ill fated and abridged Wavves show. Hometown garage rock troublemakers Made Violent, who are currently prepping for the release of new music next year and getting ready for a tour of the midwest with Ugly Sun, open the show, returning to the Town Ballroom stage that started it all,[...]

Tonight: Lazlo Hollyfeld & Friends Play Arcade Fire

Beloved Buffalo experimental rockers Lazlo Hollyfeld have previously taken on the music of Talking Heads, LCD Soundsystem, and Radiohead, and tonight they’re playing twenty… yes twenty Arcade Fire songs at the Mohawk, which is the closest we’ve gotten to the real thing since the fancy dress loving Arcade Fire has chosen to skip playing Buffalo for the last 12 years. If you caught their Radiohead In Rainbows shows last year at Iron Works and The Bug Jar you know Lazlo Hollyfeld will do a very good job, and with a whole bunch of accomplices joining them to generate that big Arcade Fire sound, tonight could be a real pre Halloween treat. Meanwhile, NYC rock legends The Strokes, who have played WNY, will be honored with a set of covers by local all-star tribute band Different Strokes, featuring Tom (Humble Braggers) Burtless, Ben (Dance Yrself Clean) Parsons, John (Girl Jeans) Grace, Ryan (The Slums) Schilia, and[...]

Tonight: The Ambulanters

Brit alternative band from Nebraska The Ambulanters drop by Milkie’s tonight to coincidentally play the release party for local psych/surf rockers Passed Out’s latest EP with David Dondero, Bold Folly, The Good Neighbors, and Passed Out, obviously. The fellas in Passed Out are back with the Aforementioned and How it Pertains to Absolutely Nothing, produced by Deadwolf’s Cody Morse and mixed by Elliot (M.A.G.S., KIN) Douglass, and lead single “Bukowski & Brautigan” is a literate and crunchy hit and run jam that you really ought to listen to right now. Please note The Ambulanters are not British in any way, but their sound is straight up British alternative, heavy on Joy Division and The Smiths, which is mighty tasty filtered through the band’s unassuming Midwestern lens.  Also hailing from the Midwest, Minneapolis songwriter David Dondero is in town in support of his latest album Inside The Cat’s Eye, while additional local support will[...]
