The Internet – “Following the Logic”

California group the Internet (no not that one) is back with an easy going new single “Following the Logic” Since forming in 2010, the group has shifted its lineup and sound, moving away from its early shoegaze beginnings to a revised dreamlike pop vibe. Tailor-made for an end of summer playlist, the band’s first offering of new music since its 2019 album Semicolon Forward Slash is a breezy, lo-fi number that somehow finds a comfy middle ground between Ariel Pink and the Sea and Cake. Rochester singer midnight returns his electric-soul sound to us by way of his new single “Native America.” In his controlled falsetto, midnight gently navigates through the bounding synths and kicks of the beat. “Native America” is driven upon the sin and dishonesty that resulted in the foundation of our country. The title and track reference both the atrocities committed against the indigenous people of the Americas, and how how the normalcy of violence and stubbornness is engrained in our being. “We’re in Native America,” midnight sings “where the lies are infamous, but the truth, it lives in us.” It is charged and sharp while remaining beautiful and delicate. Even with the break-up of Odd Future, it seems that luckily for Buffalo, every member still seems to have an affinity for the Queen City. After shows already from Tyler, the Creator and Mellow Hype in the past year, The Internet arrives to represent a decidedly different side of the former Odd Future family. Initially making a name for herself as the lead producer for most of Odd Future’s acts, Syd tha Kyd finally embarked on her own creative venture with fellow producer Matt Martians to form the neo-soul group. With some of the finest beats the duo have ever produced, the band expertly blends jazz, R&B, and hip-hop in a way that almost sonically resembles the early Bristol sound.
