Tonight: Justin Roeland & Lady D

Indie-folk bard Justin Roeland joins a stacked bill of local songwriters tonight at Nietzsche’s. Currently based in Ithaca, Roeland along with his band Nightswimmers has been a fairly regular sight in lineups recently. With deeply poetic, quasi lethargic lyricism, and captivating melodies, Roeland has proven himself to be a standout member of a sometimes crowded field of songwriters. Joining Roeland tonight are Sonny Baker, known for both his solo work and his work with Lazlo Hollyfeld,  Oats Holy Roller, the moniker of Joe Myers most recently known for his project The Shallows, and Andy Pothier, lead singer of Passed Out. Tonight is a night for deeply cathartic, moderately melancholy music presented by four of the most talented songwriters this city has seen in years. This event will sure to be a hit for fans of Jeff Tweedy, Andy Shauf, Big Thief, and Slaughter Beach, Dog. 8:30pm doors, $5, 21+ Doomed To Bloom[...]

Tonight: Sonny Baker Band

Nietzsche’s is holding the line tonight against the existential threat of the invading  lunkheads with a strong lineup of in your face but smart as hell local rock featuring the always satisfying Sonny Baker Band, The Eaves, TVMTN and the Shallows. One of the hardest working musicians in Buffalo, Sonny is the sound of the city we wish it really was, and tonight he’s getting the whole band together to play some original tunes and possibly some interesting covers because they are good like that. Tonight’s lineup will feature American garage rockers The Eaves, fresh off the release of their tight full length vinyl LP Learning To Live last month; newbie indie rock outfit TVMTN, featuring members of On Beta, The Old Sweethearts and Fourem; and the Shallows, the latest project from inevitable talismanic folk hero Joe Myers and an incredible band held aloft by Chris Ploss and heave’s Emily Finlan. Doors are[...]

Tonight: Lancer

Gravel-voiced pop-punk trio Lancer are reuniting tonight for what promises to be a fun-filled evening of reminiscing and nostalgia. Their 2013 six-song EP, Don Is Rich, was a then-buffaBLOG favorite, full of great pop hooks, gigantic choruses, irreverent lyrics, and youthful energy. They’re joined tonight by fellow Edenite-turned-Buffalonian Sonny Baker, the always-entertaining indiemo act Passed Out, and recently rebranded Venus Vacation (formerly known as Major Arcana). Tonight’s show is at 8pm and costs a modest $5 for entry. Don Is Rich by Lancer

In The lineup for tonight’s show will also feature the assertive and dynamic vigor of Jack, the guitar-led jangly indie rock magic of Sonny Baker and the disquieted psychedelia of Bold Folly. Sonny Baker – Steady Hands, Dead Tired

On his new release Steady Hands, Dead Tired, acclaimed Buffalo-area guitarist Sonny Baker solidifies himself as a purveyor of top-notch rock ‘n’ roll with a post-punk flair. The raucous and thrilling yet impressively considered first track “Basic Interactions” augments ravaging guitar, exclamatory singing and rollicking drums with surges of bass sure to course through the listener’s entire body. “Reluctant Thief” stays subdued and relaxing until about the 1-minute mark, when it lets loose to exhilarating effect with an impassioned cry of “I know it’s been years, since I made a fool of you.” Charged-up instrumental ascension is curtailed in a snap when the song returns to its relatively more easygoing, reserved verses. The next track, “Comfortable,” begins with stand-alone guitar riffage before pounding drums kick in to send the song into a melodic barrage. A biting, relentlessly catchy rhythm ensues, and two full minutes of interlocking guitar work escort the[...]

Sonny Baker Returns with “Reluctant Thief”

Long-serving Buffalo musician Sonny Baker’s solo single “Reluctant Thief” is a 5-minute meditation on withering relationships perfectly suited for play at maximum volume. Sparse rhythm and slackened guitar accompany soothing, softly sung verses, while bursts of raucous guitar join in on the song’s tortured, soul-bearing choruses. With a command of both raw and reserved stylings vocally and instrumentally, Sonny Baker’s newest offering harkens back to the heyday of Dinosaur Jr. as well as bands who hit the music scene in the 21st century, like My Morning Jacket and Broken Social Scene. Check out Baker’s newest single, due out December 15th via Admirable Traits Records.

Tonight: PAWS

What better way to end your weekend then with a stacked show? Tonight, PAWS from Glasgow, Scotland will be in town at the Mohawk Place, backed by some killer local acts. The three piece brings some killer energy to the table, creating a unique blend of alternative rock and pop punk. Opening the show up will be two killer local acts, Sonny Baker and Passed Out. Sonny Baker will be playing with his full band, and Passed Out will be kicking things off. Doors are set to open at Mohawk at 7pm, and its a $10 cover charge at the door. Don’t miss out on this one.

Sonny Baker – Easier

There’s not much to say about Sonny Baker that hadn’t already been said. The Buffalo musician has been a staple of the local scene for over a decade now, having had associations with more musical acts than I can count on one hand. Between full-band freak outs and introspective singer-songwriter pieces–and everything in between–Baker’s musical resume is impressive for a man only just nearing his 30s, and he just keeps churning it out. Baker’s latest release Easier, a collaborative effort with Chris Groves (Fourem, Applennium) follows suit with his 2015 full-band EP Flesh it Out in that the songs seem to widen the gap between what would otherwise be considered Sonny’s “solo material.” Groves’ role in the batch of songs is as integral as it is backgrounded, providing multi-instrumental support on most of the tracks that propels the music beyond the boundary of a typical singer-songwriter affair. Groves also recorded[...]

Tonight: Kevin Devine

Buffalo is in store for a very special treat tonight. Kevin Devine is making his way back to our city for his first show here in a couple years, but is leaving his band behind and playing a solo set in the basement of Asbury Hall, the 9th Ward. This treat of a solo show is normally reserved for big cities and special occasions, and is something you won’t want to miss if you are at all familiar with his material. Devine has been releasing music since the early 2000’s, and he is sure to be playing songs spanning his entire discography, including tracks from his side project with Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra, Bad Books. Local songwriter Sonny Baker will be kicking the show off, and he is fresh off of the release of a new EP, titled easier. Sonny will be playing a solo set as well. The mellow night[...]

Sonny Baker Releases New Single

Sonny Baker’s newest single, “Swollen, You’re Opening” off his forthcoming release, Easier, is a pleasant surprise. If you’re at all familiar with Baker’s music, you’re familiar with a driving rock beat, jangly guitar hooks, dynamically cathartic vocals. This song is more of a stripped down soundtrack to a daydream, with the samba inspired rhythm and shy acoustics offering a pie-in-the-sky feel. Though somewhat unexpected, I think Baker approaches the tune with finesse and honesty, which speaks to his sensibility toward craft over genre. Peep the single below and keep an ear out for the rest of the EP to drop next month.

Tonight: The Leones

Tonight Buffalo ghost rockers The Leones will be headlining a tight lineup of local bands at the 9th Ward at Babeville including Sonny Baker and Chevron Bloom that looks like a can’t miss show in the making. Fresh off their excellent album Ghost In The City, Leones fans can expect more synth heavy explorations into ghostly horror, along with new music from their upcoming album of a more psychedelic and spaced out variety, which is always good when heard in an acoustically perfect room such as the always exquisite 9th Ward . Joining them will be Sonny Baker and a special solo acoustic set and the very vibe heavy garage rockers Chevron Bloom. Cover is $7 and doors open at 7pm. See you there.
