Tonight: Simon Joyner at Silo City Reading Series

Tonight Buffalo post industrial event site and Instagram hot-spot Silo City hosts the latest installment of Just Buffalo Literary Center’s Silo City Reading Series, a multi-disciplinary event featuring local and international artists and musicians plus prolific Omaha-based singer/songwriter and lo-fi legend Simon Joyner. A pillar of the Omaha music scene, Joyner has releasing a steady stream of albums and material since the early 90’s, influencing Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes, Better Oblivion Community Center)  and The Mountain Goats while also sharing the singular and noteworthy distinction of having his album played in it’s entirety by BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel. Simon Joyner will be joined in the magnificent space that awed both Le Corbusier and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius by noted American poet Bob Hicok, local performance artist, poet, and owner of Rust Belt Books Kristianne Meal, and Buffalo transdisciplinary artist, designer, writer and educator Shasti O’Leary Soudant. The event is free and[...]

Tonight: Julie Byrne

Fans of ambient art folk are in for a treat tonight. In a special event at unorthodox venue Silo City, singer-songwriter Julie Byrne makes her return to Buffalo. Joining her are natives Lara Buckley and Noah Falck. Julie Byrne, who was born and raised in Buffalo, is touring in support of her acclaimed sophomore album Not Even Happiness. Byrne’s compositions here are earthy and intimate, making use of intricate guitar fingerpicking with occasional light string accompaniment or samples. Her cross-country travels are inherent in these songs, and especially evident in her picturesque and poetic lyricism. Local artist Lara Buckley is known for her bombastic and spiritual sound collages, combining layers of vocals, synthetic instrumentation and natural field recordings. Noah Falck is the education director at Just Buffalo Literary Center, and he’ll be reading some of his own opaque-yet-poignant style poetry. The show begins at 8pm at Silo City. Tickets are[...]

Tonight: Lichens

Artist Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe has a body of work that ranges from acting, film composition, playing in experimental psychedelic rock band Om, as well as a solo modular synth project under the name Lichens. These vocal/electronic explorations bring to mind musicians like Julianna Barwick and Holly Herndon, with intricately layered and droning sounds. Back in 2005, Lowe released his first full length, The Psychic Nature of Being on Kranky Records, and has since put out six LPs under the Linchens project. Tonight, the Brooklyn based musician will perform at Buffalo’s Silo City to help celebrate the life and works of Hollis Frampton, the pioneering avant-garde multimedia artist who finished his career teaching at University at Buffalo. Also performing tonight will be local experimental pop/electronic artist Lesionread, putting on a collaborative noise set with Space Cubs. Music starts at 8pm and the event is free to the public

Tonight: Sun Riah

Sun Riah, the recording alias of Oklahoma City native Moriah Bailey, presents a more melancholic side of the harp, with her haunting, experimental arrangements and a vocal delivery reminiscent of Joanna Newsom. Incorporating elements of ambient, folk, and shoegaze, and using mesmerizing loops to achieve a reflective, otherworldly sound, her work has developed a reputation for blurring genre boundaries. Firefly Night Light, the artist’s latest self-released album, is a comprehensive look at Sun Riah’s ambitious style of songwriting that ranges from celestial to ominous and unsettling. Tonight, the singer/songwriter will perform at Buffalo’s Silo City as a part of its Silo  Sessions series. Music starts at 7pm with an opening set from local singer/ukulele player Sica Marinaccio. CCDS (DEATH SQUAD) Drops New Video

One of Buffalo’s most unique musical projects comes in the form of local drum duo CCDS – DEATH SQUAD, and the pair just dropped a new video on the Buffalo DIY YouTube channel. Normally, CCDS (Cameron Rogers and Amber Kogut) makes use of a sampler which they use to inject brief, interesting sound bites and recordings into their craft. However, in this video, an acoustic (dual kits) performance of their song “Murdered By Ghouls” in Buffalo’s reverberantly spacious Silo City, they cut the electronics out altogether. The result still gives way to something completely fresh, their synchronized tribal beatdowns echoing through concrete halls of the abandoned urban hotspot. Check it out below.
