Friday, January 17th @ 8pm Captain Tom & the Hooligans @ Molly Maguires   Buffalo’s #1 polka band under sixty years old will play a fun one at one of South Buffalo’s finest dive bars on Friday. If you aren’t familiar, Captain Tom & the Hooligans exploded onto the scene post-Covid, sharing the stage with both punk rock bands and old time Polish journeymen, gaining fans along the way with their re-imaginative spin on polka classics. They’ve hit the local market pretty heavily over the past couple of years and you may have encountered the band inadvertently on their circuit of community festivals, breweries and one-offs. If you’ve ever heard a band playing polka with some stank on it, it was likely Captain Tom & the Hooligans. Make sure your Fitbit is charged up and your footwear rated for dancing tonight when Brooklyn art funk duo Rubblebucket bring their thoughtful, intense, and very groove heavy show to Babeville’s Asbury Hall with And The Kids.  The longtime indie darlings will be turning it up with jams off their luminescent fourth album, Sun Machine, which feels really like the juiciest nuggets of the Tom Tom Club oeuvre but with even more feels, so you can definitely expect some fun and maybe some sweet emotional release by the time Annakalmia and Alex are done with us, in one of the city’s most sacred venues (and hub of artistic endeavor). Rubblebucket – “Fruity”

Brooklyn indie-pop vets, Rubblebucket, are back with vibrant visuals for their cheery new single, “Fruity.” Off their upcoming LP, Sun Machine, the duo brings us a featherweight dance track accentuated with jazzy elements and singer Kalmia Traver’s soft-spoken vocals making for a jubilant listen. Of the handful of bands that I consistently recommend seeing live, Rubblebucket has held a spot on my list since I first saw them in 2014. I’m convinced that most upbeat, dance groove-driven bands translate well to a crowd of people in terms of energy, but man oh man, does this one take energetic to a whole new level. Granted, there are always 5+ members in the Brooklyn-based outfit, a beefed up horn section, and sometimes an eccentric full-bodied, faceless flower mascot comes out and stage to boogie. Sounds wild, right? Even still, the band is incredibly tight and will absolutely captivate you musically, if not visually. Since re-branding themselves under the name Rubblebucket in 2008, the band has put out 7 official releases (with a brand new one on the way!). They haven’t quite reached household name status, but it’s clear that wildly huge success is not the end-all[...]

Rubblebucket. Rubblebucket. Rubblebucket. Say the word three times and all your wishes will be granted! Not really, but the Brooklyn-based band’s name is a catchy one. It brings to mind a magical spell that can be cast anywhere, from the dirty city streets to the cool air of a mountaintop. A charismatic, playful lead female vocalist and saxophonist carries the spotlight among her fellow band members. Together, they form a dynamic septet that produces a riveting big-band sound, flowing between softer pop sets and extended grooves. 2011 album Omega La La fastened their music as a facet to the larger festival scene–playing at larger line-ups such as Bonnaroo and Camp Bisco. Rubblebucket moves in catchy, dance-heavy spurts, proven to get you hooked. Opening for Rubblebucket tomorrow will be Rhubarb, a staple in the WNY groove-rock community.
