Tonight: The Internet

Even with the break-up of Odd Future, it seems that luckily for Buffalo, every member still seems to have an affinity for the Queen City. After shows already from Tyler, the Creator and Mellow Hype in the past year, The Internet arrives to represent a decidedly different side of the former Odd Future family. Initially making a name for herself as the lead producer for most of Odd Future’s acts, Syd tha Kyd finally embarked on her own creative venture with fellow producer Matt Martians to form the neo-soul group. With some of the finest beats the duo have ever produced, the band expertly blends jazz, R&B, and hip-hop in a way that almost sonically resembles the early Bristol sound. The group also acts as a platform to showcase the shockingly beautiful voice of Syd herself, which itself plays as a spell-binding instrument in the group’s sound. The group is[...]

Tyler, The Creator at Town Ballroom (6/14/15)

With the Odd Future collective in flux, the group’s clown prince ringleader, Tyler, The Creator, returned to Buffalo Sunday night for a sold-out performance that saw the rapper dig deep into his latest record, Cherry Bomb. Contributing blog photographer, Candace Camuglia, was on hand to snap some pics of Tyler, opener and fellow/former Odd Future member Taco, and a somewhat subdued (for an OF show at least) crowd. For a full recap of the show, check out our review here.

Tyler, The Creator at Town Ballroom (6/14/15)

Sunday night, Tyler, The Creator, the controversial former/current ringleader of the rap group Odd Future, made his return to Buffalo at an interesting point in his career. The young cult rap superstar had just in recent weeks continually announced then denied the end of Odd Future, and was fresh off the release of his new album which continued to move further away from his debut effort Goblin. So needless to say, it was interesting to see how this show was gonna pan out and how the hardcore Odd Future fans that made up the audience would response to it. While the show opened with some of Tyler’s earliest work from Goblin, including perhaps Tyler’s strongest (and most demented track), “Tron Cat,” the show was mostly dominated by songs from his new record, Cherry Bomb. I’ll admit to not being the biggest fan of the new album, as I feel like[...]

Tonight: Tyler, The Creator

Back in 2010, Tyler, The Creator debuted his first studio album, Goblin. With lyrics that bring new meaning to the word “offensive,” he not so quietly gained some notorious attention. Name dropping everyone from Bruno Mars to Miley Cyrus (in not so pleasant terms) his music, despite being vehemently off-putting to some critics, was the subject of conversation. Not so shockingly, Tyler has admitted to being a fan of Eminems. What the two have in common, perhaps, is their ability to offend basically everyone with homophobic and otherwise demeaning slurs. However, his vulgarity was not his only gimmick: in his music video for his single, “Yonkers,” a song proclaiming itself a paradox, Tyler again received attention, going so far as to eat — and regurgitate — a live cockroach for the sake of authenticity. As an early listener of Tyler’s music, I admittedly hated everything about him. I first heard[...]

Just Announced: Tyler, the Creator

Odd Future/OFWGTKA’s often controversial leader, Tyler, the Creator, will be returning to the Town Ballroom on June 14th. Known for his over the top, extremely hyped antics, Tyler will undoubtedly liven up the Main Street venue, even if it is just a Sunday. Earlier this year, Tyler reported he would be recording with Mac DeMarco, a collaboration that is intriguing to say the least. Tickets will go on sale Friday, March 13th, at noon for $30 via Ticketfly. Fuck Steve Harvey.

MellowHype – INSA

There is a clear hierarchy in the notorious West Coast collective Odd Future. Frank Ocean recently dropped his OF representatives, but he’s still somewhat associated and he is untouchably superior to the whole group. He garners acclaim from all directions and his masterpiece ChannelORANGE is one of the most celebrated albums in recent years. Then there’s Tyler, the Creator, the outspoken king of the teenagers, and founder of the group and it’s image. He is Odd Future, and his first major release Wolf saw many positive reviews and was praised for it’s independence and creativity. Next in line is Earl Sweatshirt, who’s probably the superior rapper of the two, but also much more of a recluse, and therefore out of the shine. His debut Doris was an introspective, murky depiction of life as a depressed teen prodigy reluctant to star, and the critics loved that too. So that’s the big three, and after that who comes[...]
