Ossa – “Echoes”

Indie rock trio Ossa channel some astral dream pop vibes in their single “Echoes.” The Providence, Rhode Island-based rockers string together fuzz guitars, halcyon synths, and binding group vocal refrains to set sail towards a breezy, calming tomorrow. It hits the sweet spot between drowsy and feel-good, setting the soundtrack for the sun soaked lazy days of spring. “Echoes” come from the band’s debut EP currently in the works, touching on themes of telepathy, dream interpretation, and old friends.

Sweeney – “King Shit Pt. 2”

Budding Boulder, Colorado hip hop act Sweeney hits the ground running in his latest track “King Shit Pt. 2.” Praised for his adaptive style and versatility, Sweeney channels crafty lyricism and a beat-driven flow into every corner of this track, looping it all in seamlessly from beginning to end. By no means a newcomer to the scene, his archive of tracks attest to his ambidextrous talent and unrelenting drive. Get your fix with “King Shit Pt. 2” below, and head here if you’re hungry for more.

Group Photos – “In The Morning”

Indie rock four piece Group Photos head up their recent EP release with their track “In The Morning.” Channeling a bit of their native California surf rock, the band funnel in sunny guitar lines with contrastingly dark, lo-fi vocals and snappy drum work. The effect is a progressively brooding sound, somewhere on the alt rock spectrum between Day Wave and Interpol. As their third release, Group Photos seem to have tightened up their loose ends, diving fully into the chillwave deep end. Head over to their bandcamp for the rest of the Open District EP.

FRAUDS – “Nobody”

Parisian indie pop trio FRAUDS follow up their 2017 EP release with a moody new single, “Nobody.” This track explores the full breadth of new age synth domination, weaving in layers of buzzing bass lines, thematic chord progressions, and glittery arpeggios. Riding the ebb and flow of the soundscape, the vocals act as the glue that binds it all together, making for a powerful chorus at the crossroads of Björk-meets-Icona Pop. The band explore themes of ingenuity and discomfort as a result of being misunderstood, a feeling that is as easy to resonate with as the song is to jam to. See for yourself with “Nobody” below.

Deadwolf Drop “Cold Reception” B-Side

Local heavy psych rockers Deadwolf just dropped a “b-side” from their excellent 2017 Heavy Heart full length, and “Cold Reception” is as archetypal of what a b-side represents as you can get. Experimental and utterly unbound by restraint or convention, “Cold Reception” is bonkers and verging on prog, with constant time changes and left turns that recall late 60’s Syd Barrett/post Syd pre Meddle Pink Floyd by way of modern psych heroes The Flaming Lips and their preternatural gift for making your ears feel funny. You can check “Cold Reception” out below, but avoid operating heavy machinery until you’ve come out the other side… for all our sakes. Cold Reception by Deadwolf

Damen – “Freud Division”

Swedish act Damen recently sent over the video for their third single, “Freud Division…” These dudes are rather mysterious information-wise, but we think the music speaks for itself. Combining frantic drum/bass work with twinkly guitars and urgent vocals, this quartet reminds us of a mix of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Bombay Bicycle Club, and Tokyo Police Club. Check out the vid below and decide for yourself. You dig? Buy it on iTunes.

Indigo Husk – “Not Feeling Better”

Jangly, giddy, and just the slightest bit goofy, Indigo Husk have struck gold with their latest offering, “Not Feeling Better.” A self-described self-help mantra, the song juxtaposes feelings of sadness with an inescapably happy melody… My personal favorite touch: a lead guitar that noodles its way in and out of all the song’s nooks and crannies. Check it out via the widget below. There are many ways to consume “Not Feeling Better,” check them all out here.

Trunkgod – “Ego Boost”

You know the saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover?” Well enter Wichita, KS emcee, Trunkgod, who blesses us with the visuals for his latest track, “Ego Boost.” Dropping his usual comedic shtick, Trunkgod gets real and irreverently vents about the struggles of a DIY, independent artist using sharp rhymes and punchlines delivered in an impressive and, at times, dizzying flow. Open your ears and give it a listen below. Be sure to check out Trunkgod’s SoundCloud here for more tracks.

Spirits of Leo – “Eden”

Brooklyn-based Spirits of Leo pass on their latest single, “Eden,” a hypnotic, darkwave track off their upcoming album, Equinox, that will cast you under its spell and force you to put it on repeat. The song features drearily upbeat melodies and fuzzy, whispering vocals that creep into your eardrums and subconscious making for a hauntingly poppy and immersive listen. Dim the lights, relax in your favorite chair and check it out below. Equinox will be released March 23rd. Pre-order the album at Spirits of Leo’s Bandcamp here.

Callum Pitt – “Happiness”

Northeast England’s Callum Pitt has released “Happiness,” a tune that encapsulates its title superbly, bringing forth a cheery, endlessly ear-catching melody and sonorous background vocals. Similar in style to a more pop-oriented incarnation of Fleet Foxes, it’s an indie-folk song most fitting for a long, warm day (when days like that will return around this area is more questionable territory, but the point remains). After his breakout year, which included a steady rise in coverage and attendance at his shows, Callum Pitt is deservedly a singer-songwriter with immense potential going forward.

I Feel Fine – “Lifer”

Out of Brighton, rock band I Feel Fine crafts music quite unlike the Beatles song that shares their name. Their newly released tune “Lifer” is noisy but meticulous rock ‘n’ roll devoid of strict pop sensibilities, similar to a slice of Modest Mouse’s early catalog. Chugging guitars, a barrage of drums and angst-ridden vocals make up a large quantity of the song, with a loud-quiet dynamic appearing ever so sparsely but ever so perfectly throughout the track. These guys know how to keep a listener on edge and engaged—that’s for certain. Their full-length Long Distance Celebration, to be released through Failure By Design Records, is due out May 4. thanks. – “Loose Gun”

“Loose Gun,” a new song from Los Angeles-based alternative rock outfit thanks., is vibrant as can be—a short, sweet and pulsating burst of indie pop energy. Saturated simultaneously with a freewheeling attitude as well as reflections of oneself and the precious nature of time’s passage, “Loose Gun” is something to get you dancing or thinking, or potentially even both. Check out the tune, released through the label Highland Park, down below:

Space Cubs Reveals New Single “Quitting”

Reborn Buffalo electronica band Space Cubs are getting ready to release What iff, their first EP as a quartet in a few weeks, and for an enigmatic and tantalizing teaser they’ve just released it’s lead single “Quitting.” Inscrutable like Amnesiac era Radiohead, “Quitting” floats in on a hazy cloud of Ken Culton’s hard to pin down poly-rhythms, eerie guitar riffs from Adam Pressley, the ambient Eno vibes of Shawn Lewis, and Suzanne Bonifacio’s otherworldly and hypnotic vocals, building to an off-kilter crescendo of chaos before succumbing to sweet entropy that sounds great in your inner ear. If the rest of What iff is as exquisitely crafted and affecting as “Quitting,” we will be in for a genuine treat when the EP drops April 7th, with a release party at the Mohawk that night featuring Jack, Sonny Baker, and Bold Folly. Palace Winter – “Empire”

Copenhagen-based alternative rock duo Palace Winter’s new tune “Empire” is couched in a remarkably full-sounding and embracing sound as well as a catchy-as-all-hell vocal melody. It sways around like a glorious classical overture blended with all the arena readiness of a Bruce Springsteen concoction and doused in the more modern, instrumentally layered touches of indie darlings like The War on Drugs. Palace Winter’s album Nowadays, their first full-length effort since 2016, is set for a release in May.
