EdgeFest 2015 at the Outer Harbor (9/12/15)

In spite of Saturday’s less than ideal weather, 103.3’s annual Edgefest was hugely successful. Thousands turned out on a dreary day to see the likes of Rise Against, Coheed & Cambria, Modest Mouse, and many other groups as the rain ceased to let up. Local band Made Violent has created quite a fan base over the last couple years and put on a show that seems to ensure its continued success. The trio, who leave for a two week tour of the UK today, managed to set the tone of the show and the other acts followed suit. Edgefest was a show not to be missed, downpour and all. Today and Tonight: EdgeFest 2015

What a day for music in Buffalo, huh? Once a year, 103.3 the Edge puts together a showcase of impossible acts that you’d never think to see together on a show. That showcase is known as EdgeFest 2015. Just Announced: Modest Mouse

One thing that has been happening more and more is that we are getting concert announcements for bands that are totally out of left field. We usually know ahead of time the majority of bands that are going to come through before they are publicly announced based on our network of Buffalo music industry insiders, but not today’s announcement. After a fairly quiet summer at the outer harbor, it was announced at 5pm on the dot that on Saturday, September 12th, 103.3 the Edge would be hosting an evening co-headlined by Modest Mouse and Rise Against, with support by Coheed and Cambria, Highly Suspect, Boots, Made Violent and MORE. Isaac Brock must have had some great wings when he came last spring. Tickets go on sale this Friday, July 10th, at noon via TicketMaster for $31.03 (only as an early bird special). Yeehaw.

Modest Mouse at Asbury Hall (4/17/15)

If I’m being honest, there’s no way for me to approach this review without a little bit of bias. There’s a lot of bands that hold a special place in my heart, but Modest Mouse was my gateway into the world of indie rock. I still remember hearing “Polar Opposites” on a Music Choice channel when I was 12 years old and spent the next 3 months playing almost nothing, but The Moon & Antarctica and Lonesome Crowded West on repeat. While I haven’t been as hot on some of their latest work, to say that finally seeing Modest Mouse on Friday was a sentimental moment is an understatement. The sold out show at Asbury Hall was undoubtedly the hottest ticket in Buffalo this year, initially selling out in all of five minutes and scalper tickets were going for almost $150 online. After 20 years into their storied career, Modest Mouse[...]

Tonight: Modest Mouse

I was originally going to write a long piece on Modest Mouse in honor of the band’s sold out appearance tonight at Asbury Hall, but what’s the point. You know who Modest Mouse is. The show wouldn’t have sold out in 10 mins if you hadn’t, so I will save both parties the trouble and just bring us to up the present. The Portland-based rock outfit released its sixth studio album and first in eight years, Strangers to Ourselves, exactly one month ago to the date. I met the album with a pretty tepid response, thinking “it took eight years to release that?,” but after a few more listens, Strangers really grew on me, and I am really looking forward to Isaac Brock and crew tackling the new album and the band’s deep catalog later this evening. As I mentioned before, this show has been sold out since Day 1,[...]

Modest Mouse – Strangers to Ourselves

Over the last couple years, Modest Mouse’s new album had become arguably the most anticipated release in alternative rock. The eight-year gap so soon after their mid-aught heyday was made all the more intriguing by the bits of news that did emerge. Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr had already left the band, they worked with OutKast mastermind Big Boi (but mostly just got fucked up), and of course, the tongue-in-cheek name for front man Isaac Brock’s record label, Glacial Pace. But Strangers to Ourselves is classic Modest Mouse – overstuffed, over-the-top and overdramatic in all the best ways. Even still the record shows a sense of maturity and growth. The music is darker, more brooding and abrasive than their last two records – yet still retains the pop influences opened up by their breakthrough Good News for People Who Love Bad News. And perhaps most important: Brock’s frenzied vocals and razor-sharp[...]

Just Announced: Modest Mouse

After a seven year hiatus, long time Washington indie rockers, Modest Mouse, will release its long awaited new album, Strangers to Ourselves, on March 17th. The band will be celebrating the release with a spring tour, one that includes a stop at Babeville’s Asbury Hall, on Friday, April 17th, just four days prior to the venue’s sold out Neutral Milk Hotel show. Thats a #winning week for Babeville right there. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 6th, at noon for $52 in advance, $55 day of.
