Mitski at the Tralf Music Hall (10/03/17)

This past Tuesday, Buffalo had a lot going on. COIN at the Town Ballroom, Circa Waves at the 9th Ward, Frankie Cosmos at Mohawk, and Mitski at the Tralf Music Hall. If you ended up you picking the Mitski show that night, you made a very smart choice. Stef Chura kicked off the two band show off with a quick, charming set, equal parts bouncy and emotional.  When Mitski took the stage, she immediately demanded attention. The crowd was respectful throughout their set, in which she performed some tremendously emotionally dense tracks, focusing on her last two records, Puberty 2 and Bury Me at Makeout Creek.  Mitski made their first stop in Buffalo since 2014 a memorable one, and hopefully it won’t take them another 3 years to come back around town. Check out some photos from the night below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. Stef Chura Mitksi

Tonight: Mitski

Mitsuki will return to Buffalo tonight for her first show in the city since 2014. A lot has happened for Mitski since then, the release of her stellar breakout record Bury Me At Makeout Creek, some insane press, garnering a following across the globe, and in 2016, the release of her latest incredible record, titled Puberty 2. Coming from someone who has seen Mitski once on tour for her latest LP, Buffalo is in for a real treat tonight. The live translations of her tracks are performed so delicately, but sound absolutely massive, it’s something you won’t forget. Doors open at the Tralf Music Hall at 7pm, and Stef Chura will kick things off at 8pm. Tickets are still available at the door for $18.

buffaBLOG is elated to announce that we will be covering the Pitchfork Music Festival for the third year in a row. The festival takes place at Union Park in Chicago, and we are sending blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor, to capture all of the action. The festival will take place July 14th through July 16th and will be headlined by LCD Soundsystem, A Tribe Called Quest, and Solange, with dozens of other amazing performers sprinkled across the weekend.  In anticipation of the festival, here are the five acts we are most excited to see on Saturday.  You can check out Brendan’s photos from last year HERE, HERE, and HERE. Jeff Rosenstock @ the Red Stage, 1:45pm God damn this band is fun. While I am honestly a little surprised that they are playing Pitchfork Fest, I am still super excited. I’ve seen Jeff a few times in the past, and his live shows are always exceedingly energetic.[...]

Elvis Depressedly at the Space (7/18/15)

Minutes into his set Saturday night in Hamden, Connecticut, Mathew Cothran, mic chord snaked around his hands and neck, asked the crowd at the Space if they were into prophecy. He then launched into a bunch of authoritative lines that seemed like he was performing an exorcism. Cothran’s project, Elvis Depressedly, mixed introspective lyrics with a more high powered edge than the way the songs appear on his album, this year’s New Alhambra, which is in part an homage to the arena that used to host ECW wrestling. The songs are fairly downcast, reminiscent of early Bright Eyes, mixing refined production linked together with obscure samples of muddled dialogue. On stage, Cothran prowls around while the four members of his band bring his songs to life. Barely any of his songs hit three minutes, but he went the distance for each one, holding the mic with a vice grip and[...]

Tonight: Mitski

Hump day is upon us. And if you’re sitting at home thinking to yourself “I wish my hump day wasn’t such a drag…”, then read on, my friend. Brooklyn-based indie songstress Mitski will be performing at Northrup House tonight in support of her marvelous new record bury me at make out creek. There is a pleasing duality to the new record, sometimes folk-tinged and smooth like an early Jenny Lewis, other times angular and challenging like some of St. Vincent’s newer material. Mitski’s songs are equal parts beautiful, wounded, and weird, but her lyrical prowess is what drives it all home. bury me at make out creek is a buzz machine, so this may be one of the last opportunities to watch her play in such an intimate setting. Also on the bill for tonight: Portland’s psych-folker Johanna Warren, blog favorite Alex Berkley, Cobalt Blue, and Lawyer Sam. There is a $5[...]
