Tonight: Social Distortion

Legendary greaser punk rockers, Social Distortion, roll through Buffalo’s Main Street tonight to rock Town Ballroom as part of their cross-country tour. Having stood the test of time since their inception in 1978, Social D is the Cadillac of the original SoCal punk movement. The seemingly invincible singer and guitarist, Mike Ness, has led the group through a storied three decade run and pioneered an invigorating throwback punk rock ‘n’ roll sound with rockabilly style. Throw on your whitest tee, slick your hair back and don’t miss this once in a lifetime chance to see Ness strum his Les Paul and croon jukebox classics like “Story of My Life” and the Johnny Cash cover, “Ring of Fire.” Opening acts include Will Hoge and Pony Bradshaw. Cursive – “Under the Rainbow”

Veteran and celebrated post-hardcore indie rockers, Cursive, are back after years of silence with the raucously nihilistic anthem, “Under the Rainbow.” Found on their upcoming studio LP, Vitriola, this isn’t so much a call to action as it is the venting of anger and frustration over the current state of affairs. Lead singer and guitarist, Tim Kasher, lashes out at income inequality on this particular track and clashes with grippingly melodic car crash instrumentals. Nylon Otters Drop Two New Singles

Buffalo three-piece Nylon Otters are back with a double dose of indie rock goodness. Their dual release of “Pollenblonde” and “Loose Ends” are comparable to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in their volatility. The former is postured with a lazily hypnotic rock beat and mumbly, apathetic vocals while the latter is boisterous and crass with drunken outbursts of raspy hollering. What both have in common however is their catchiness and the ability to crawl inside your head and hang out for a few hours. Do yourself a favor and give these rocking Siamese tracks a listen below. Tonight: Yo La Tengo

Cancel your plans and hold onto your butts because living indie rock legends Yo La Tengo will be gracing Asbury Hall in Buffalo tonight. Debuting in 1986, Yo La Tengo are heavyweight cult heroes whose music is so beautifully emotive and engrossing-ly atmospheric it will bring a tear to your eye. Their eclectic records range anywhere from Lynchian instrumentals to lazy river folk and make up 15 studio albums and countless additional material. This year, the resilient Hoboken, NJ trio released their latest lucid full-length, There’s a Riot Going On, adding to their impressive repertoire of celestial bedroom grooves. The 9th Ward at Babeville in Buffalo is going to be rocking tonight as it hosts the legendary livewire power pop trio, Shonen Knife. These candy-coated cult heroines from Osaka, Japan have an amazingly storied and accomplished history over their rocking 40-year career. Shonen Knife first found US underground success during the 90’s with sugary sweet pop rock melodies that delight the ears and make heads rush. During this decade, they toured the country with Lollapalooza, appeared on Beavis & Butthead and counted Sonic Youth and Nirvana among their fanbase, even opening for the latter in one of their early gigs.
