King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard – Nonagon Infinity

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have been on a tear since forming in 2010. The Melbourne, Australia-based psychedelic rockers are now on their eighth full-length studio album in six years, an impressive output considering they are also relentless live performers. Their latest, Nonagon Infinity, is an onslaught of fast tempo, psyched-out rock that shows off their cornucopia of influences. The entire album is intended as a continuous, looped musical piece. Each track flows directly into the next, with the final track (“Road Train”) connecting seamlessly back to the first (“Robot Stop”). If you were to put the album on repeat, it would continue forever. Of course, you could do this with any album. However, there would be a clearly defined and discernible beginning and end. With Nonagon Infinity, you don’t know where one song ends and the next one begins, as you are lead on a never-ending sonic journey.[...]

If you haven’t heard of King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard, here’s a short history of the band’s existence. They formed in 2010 in Melbourne, literally as a side-project/joke band. They released the hard-hitting 12 Bar Bruise in 2012. It was mostly garage-ey psych punk revival. The next year saw two completely different, completely amazing albums released from the band. The first, Eyes Like The Sky, was a spaghetti-western themed album that really is in the realm of spoken word. Float Along- Fill Your Lungs was the second that year, which was more of a pure psych-rock album complete with time changes, lofty melodies, and of course, a 16 minute long song. 2014 saw the band drop two more albums, and in early 2015, Quarters!, a collection of four ten-minute songs that was just recently nominated for “best jazz album” of all things, as a part of the ARIA awards, was released[...]

It’s not every day that us Buffalonians are privileged to see musical acts from other continents, but if you’re planning on hitting up the White Fence show tonight at the Tralf, you would be so lucky. Opening for the psychedelic singer-songwriter is a grand seven-piece from Melbourne, Australia—meet King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. The band’s sound is, for a lack of better word, tremendous, walking heavy-footed on the border of neo-psychedelia and garage rock. Not only do King Gizzard’s songs easily draw comparisons to 1960’s psychedelic bands such as The Yardbirds and The Beatles, but do so without beating the genre like a dead horse. The songs are fresh, fuzzy, lush, and fun, all the while maintaining that 60’s vibe that gives King Gizzard their flavor. There is something in San Francisco’s water supply that seems to enable a seemingly endless stream of musicians to release an equally endless stream of amazing psychedelic garage rock. Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees spring to mind first but you should not forget the output of White Fence, aka Tim Presley. You may recognize the name of the excellent collaborative record he did with Ty Segall last year. This year, Presley released the excellent Segall produced LP,To the Recently Found Innocent. White Fence’s output is, perhaps, the most accessible of the artists mentioned earlier. Pop rock inflected with just the right amount of grit and strange, To the Recently Found Innocent stands as one of this summer’s most memorable releases.
