Tonight: Fucko

Another Wednesday, another solidly stacked gig at the Glitterbox.  Fucko from Boston will be rolling through town as the touring act this time around, which you’d probably be into if you ever wanted to hear a slightly darker version of Potty Mouth.  Locals on the gig include the new(ish), rip roaring band Kimmy (band), the equally as fresh hardcore act Uniform OPR, and Glitterbox staples Hot Tip. According to the facebook event, this will be one of the last shows at the Glitterbox, so if you’ve ever wanted to check out a show there, now’s your chance.  Doors open at 6pm, and the show is $6 at the door, or free/pay what you want if you’re under 18. Head to said facebook event to inquire about the address.

Kimmy Reveals Debut EP

Pear, by Kimmy, is a recent release by the Buffalo group deeply immersed in the thrashing indie rock scene.  With vocals that sound like a punk-y Kevin Drew (sometimes even King Krule), the band sports an interesting dynamic for listeners here, there, and everywhere.   Instrumentally, Kimmy is the younger brother of The Blood Brothers, and a cousin to Pissed Jeans.   Unafraid of technical dynamics and rhythms, the newly formed band teamed up to record with Steak & Cake Records’ head honcho/producer, Brandon Schlia.  Kimmy writes mosh-worthy tunes meant to shake off whatever parasite’s within.  One listen through will make you wonder why the pear on the album cover isn’t skinned and leafless. The EP kicks off with “Parasite,” which cuts like a dirty, rusted blade.  The artwork continues onto “Mutt,” a six-and-a-half minute song with plenty of intense instrumentals.  The lyrics, “… sometimes, this is not enough,” give the musical piece[...]

Tonight: Moody Cosmos

Tonight at Curly’s, we have a banger of a show for you to check out. Sonny Baker, Moody Cosmos, Kimmy, and Dreambeaches will be be convening at the basement venue for a good mix of music with all kinds of influence, from surf to psych to shoegaze. Moody Cosmos is a relatively new psych/krautrock outfit currently residing in Fredonia. It’s the most recent brainchild of Peter Cahlstadt, who also happens to be the creative force behind Fredonia’s Mooses. Sonny Baker is bringing his solo act to the show, along with Kimmy, and also the surf-ey alternative outfit Dreambeaches. This one’s an early one; doors are at 6pm with Sonny Baker going on first. Cover is $3.

Tonight: The Cardboard Swords

Tonight marks the tour kickoff for the local boys Del Paxton, along with the trio’s good friends, The Cardboard Swords. The Grand Rapids group’s blend of traditional Midwest emo and a more modern singalong style should be a perfect match for the DP guys, and for fans bands like American Football, Into It. Over It, and Empire! Empire! (I was a Lonely Estate). The four piece’s emotionally heavy lyrics about love and heartbreak will be sure to have you feeling some kind of way by the end of the night. Also on the bill alongside Del Paxton are fresh local acts Unisex and Kimmy.  Doors open at 6pm at the Glitter Box, music will start at 7pm, and you should have $5 on you for the touring band.  This is the last scheduled local date for Del Paxton for now, so come out.

Teenage Satan Releases Latest Song “She Was My Ocean”

Experimental bedroom project, Teenage Satan (now performing under the name Kimmy), sneakily dropped a new song a couple days before the fully fleshed band open from Krill last night at the Glitterbox. Fronted by local writer, Dan Bauer, the now four-piece’s latest tune, “She Was My Ocean,” sounds like Bob Dylan fronting mewithoutyou. With a newly expanded band, and new name, keep an eye out for future releases from Teenage Satan/Kimmy at the band’s bandcamp page. Listen to “She Was My Ocean” below.

Krill

Tonight: Krill

Krill is a band with all the right buzz in all the right places. Hailing from Boston, they’ve garnered a super concrete East Coast fan base with their unique brand of what they simply deem “guitar rock.” They’ve settled into this mold of acceptance among avid followers of their label, Exploding In Sound, but they are totally okay with playing for the sake of playing to a crowd that will listen. Their latest release, A Distant Fist Unclenching, is a testament to their ability to create artful music that is balanced in both musicality and lyrical content. It’s grungy and dark, but equally playful when it comes to thematic elements and overall sound. I was lucky enough to catch the band on an all-star bill in Allston, Massachusetts this past September. Their set left me numb, but in the greatest way possible. Lucky for you, you can catch them in a[...]
