Jesse & The Spirit Releases New Single “Anthropocene”

Jesse & The Spirit aka Jesse James Kaufman is back with a compellingly bleak and punishingly psychedelic single and video called “Anthropocene” that takes no prisoners and holds back no truths. Saving you a trip to a search engine, Anthropocene is the geological name for our age, the time period during which our human activity has actively wrecked the planet we live on. Meanwhile, the word psychedelic  comes from the english word psyche (the human mind, soul or spirit) and the greek word delos (clear, manifest), and this futuristic and Fridmannesque “wall of sound” aural experience is excruciatingly concise and clear of mind about our current state and future prospects, while jamming hard in the process.

Tonight: Lina Tullgren

Looking for something fun to do with your Tuesday?  Head down to Sewing Souls for a night packed with some sweet tunes.   Two acts from New York City are making the long trek to Buffalo, Lina Tullgren and Kateboard.  Lina Tullgren recently released an LP, titled Won, on NYC label Captured Tracks before the end of last year, which sounds both haunting and complex.  Kateboard utilizes a unique DIY sounding lo-fi approach, and has one full length tape under their belt from back in 2014.  The rest of the bill is stacked with three local acts. Jesse Kaufman will be doing an acoustic solo set, Heave will be making their debut as a four piece, and slow core duo Award Show will be closing things out. Doors open for the gig at 7pm, and there’s a $5 suggested donation for the touring band.  Feel free to BYOB if you’re over[...]

Tonight: Floral Print

Tonight, an eclectic array of musicians is slated to play Sewing Souls Studios. The fashion & costume design studio and multipurpose venue will host a night of quirky and experimental music. Five different acts will be gracing the stage, four of which are from the WNY area. Headlining the night is Floral Print, an experimental rock band from Atlanta, Georgia presenting elements of pop psych jazz and indie in a deconstructed manner. Buffalo native Little Cake (Ana Vafail) is an eccentric project combining classical, pop, comedy and spoken word with a show tunes inflection. Jesse Kaufman is a dark electronic and noise artist hailing from the West Side. Rounding out the evening are Patrick Weil’s lo-fi soul project Ex-Pat and Marilla based lizard rockers Planet Three. Doors are at 7pm with music starting at 8. There is a $3-$5 suggested donation at the door. running joke & alice arm by[...]

Hypoluxo – If Language

Drawing inspiration from bands like Beach Fossils, DIIV, and Told Slant, it isn’t difficult to figure out the hometown of new Broken Circles signees Hypoluxo. Further building on “that Brooklyn sound,” Hypoluxo’s new record, If Language, takes atmospheric dream pop and jangly post-punk guitar work to the next level with Sam Cogen’s captivating baritone. Comparisons to Matt Berninger are obvious; however, Hypoluxo prove themselves to be much more than “what it’d sound like if that guy from the National sang for Beach Fossils.” On first listen, songs like “Winter” and “Name Game” drift and lilt along as soundtracks to sleepy, freezing days indoors, while quicker paced songs such as the single “Directions” and album opener “Fronts” seem to hazily speed by like a cannabis-fueled summer road trip. What’s special about these moods, though, is their malleability. While those tracks appear as such at surface level, the band’s penchant for both[...]
