Tonight: Kal Marks

There are so many for cool shows to attend recently and if you haven’t made up your mind about tonight, then here’s another option: some rockin bands at a house on Hoyt. Kal Marks, heavy indie from Boston, will be rolling through with IAN playing dreamy fuzz from California in the vein of contemporaries Alvvays and Slutever. Political indie punk band Red Heat will be supporting. Lushes will round out the bill. So its 7pm at Hoyt House for $7 or whatever  you have.

Tonight: Harmonica Lewinski

Harmonica Lewinski first played Buffalo almost a year to the date at our fourth birthday party last March. A last minute dusting of snow made driving pretty difficult that night, and the Rochester based band nearly didnt make it off the I-90. Luckily, the garage/surf/punk outfit showed up just in time to play maybe the best set we have featured in the blog’s near five year existence. If you weren’t lucky enough to catch the group at our bday last year, you get another chance this evening. Later tonight at the Hoyt House, the group will return to Buffalo in support of its newest tape, Naked Brunch. Opening for Harmonica Lewinski is the ever evolving psych garage act, Sleepy Hahas, and Dead Wolf, the latter have absolutely no info listed on them, so your guess is as good as mine. The event page lists the start time at 8pm, and[...]

Tonight: Teenager

“Going back to school, or already went to school” blues got you down? Why not blow off some last minute steam tonight at Hoyt House? The young bucks who run the joint have a very relaxed attitude on life, where punk time is still alive and well. Tonight on the line up with be Toronto’s Teenager. Teenager is a garage blues punk outfit who could even foil Lester Bangs into thinking that they are the love child of The Sonics, Iggy Pop, and the Washouts, because in the music world it takes three to make a baby. Also on the bill tonight are Buffalo weirdos Alpha Hopper and fairly new lo-fi guys on the block Softlines. Show time says 7pm, but who knows. If you don’t know where Hoyt House is, you already know the drill: ask a punk.

Tonight: Secret Pizza (Early Show)

The Hoyt House has a pretty great bill tonight, which could be the perfect pre-game for tonight’s Wooden Waves release party.  The lineup is packed by three legit Rochester bands, headlined by Rochester’s growly shoegaze quartet, Secret Pizza. Also making the 75 miles journey west on 90 is power-pop four-piece, Cult Classic, and raucous Black Eyes with a punch-in-the-face duo, i cant stop wondering. From Buffalo is Real People/False Paul hybrid project, Stoop Kid, and making the return after a one year hiatus, Tony Rocky Horror. The show is supposed to start at 5pm, so tell your boss that you think you left your iron on or something around 3pm to leave you enough time to go home and change into your cool clothes. $3 cover.

Tonight: Dream Journal

Punk rock attack, thick, dirgy riffs, a lot of yelling. These are the trademark sounds of the Hoyt House and they are welcome in my earholes any day of the week. In todays age of processed nonsense sometimes you need a hit to the gut, and this place provides in spades. Hoyt’s played mark to some of 2014’s finest loud hours. Remember Who Killed Spikey Jacket? That show was off the richter. So tonight at 7pm you got Pittsburgh destroyers, Edhochuli, along with a fast-rising staple of our scene, Dream Journal, Cal Dripken and newbz Healer. It’s gonna be heavy and fast but you already knew that. $5 won’t break your bank so go or something.

Tonight: Francie Moon

You’re an idiot! Well, maybe not. Well you are if you don’t make it to the Hoyt House tonight. What’s the Hoyt House? Oh I don’t know, just one of the best destinations for house shows in the Queen City. The West Side is doing it right between Black Dots Record Boutique, the Glitterbox and the Hoyt House, so why should you ever leave? Tonight, the Hoyt will not disappoint as the main attraction, Francie Moon, will be bringing her New Jersey distorted blues along with her. Her raspy, sultry voice will seduce you and convince you to do things, things that you may not want to remember tomorrow. Also on the bill will be Mink, the surfer punk rock outfit from former members of Inquiring Mind and Tony Rocky Horror. Rounding out the bill will be Crusasis from Brooklyn and one of Buffalo’s favorites, John Toohill, performing a solo[...]

Tonight: Brain Tumors

There are very few things in life more unpleasant than a brain tumor. Hell, just the thought of a tumor hanging out on a big ol’ brain is creepy. If I’m going to avoid anything in life, I hope it’s brain tumors. But there’s this band from Minneapolis called Brain Tumors, and they’re actually pretty cool. Perhaps they have brain tumors and that’s whats responsible for their general punkness?….or not. They’re pretty hardcore either way and that’s what tonights show is all about. Hardcore. Along with general weirdness from Big Suze, some Philly punks in Bad Energy, Queen City Lotto product Scajaquada Creeps, and No Prevail we have a pretty rad show, brought to us by the fine folks at Shaken Stylus. Hoyt House (6 bucks, 7pm). You know where it is, so go.
