Tonight: Fucko

Another Wednesday, another solidly stacked gig at the Glitterbox.  Fucko from Boston will be rolling through town as the touring act this time around, which you’d probably be into if you ever wanted to hear a slightly darker version of Potty Mouth.  Locals on the gig include the new(ish), rip roaring band Kimmy (band), the equally as fresh hardcore act Uniform OPR, and Glitterbox staples Hot Tip. According to the facebook event, this will be one of the last shows at the Glitterbox, so if you’ve ever wanted to check out a show there, now’s your chance.  Doors open at 6pm, and the show is $6 at the door, or free/pay what you want if you’re under 18. Head to said facebook event to inquire about the address.

Tonight: JOHNS

The West Side basement scene is in for a treat tonight. Ohioans Goldmines and Uno Lady will be stopping through Buffalo. Resident brooding rockers JOHNS are headlining the show tonight. Female-fronted noise-rock outfit, Hot Tip, will be rounding out the bill. Expect an interesting evening that inspires a range of emotions. Ask a punk where the Glitterbox is (and deal with it when you figure it out). $5 cover, music will be going from 7pm-10pm.

Tonight: Mannequin Pussy

If Philly’s basements are shit holes, they still spring eternal. Phila’s own Mannequin Pussy is pretty dynamic, just like the scene: equal parts sassy shouts, surf rock, and compact punk. They are for fans of Chumped and The Le Sigh blog. Crosss from Toronto was set to play tonight with Mannequin Pussy at the Glitterbox, but sadly, passport issues will keep them off of the bill. If case you were wondering, Crosss sounds like Slow Warm Death meets Belle and Sebastian’s eerie grunge. This trio produces out there tunes with laid back vibes. Holding down the hometown is Hot Tip as well as cool duo Space is Haunted.  The night starts with bands at 7pm and don’t forget to bring some money for the now one touring band.

Tonight: Roz and the Rice Cakes

No, we’re not talking about the delicious and health-conscious snack – in fact, one of Rhode Island’s best is gracing Buffalo tonight (need proof? click here). Roz and the Rice Cakes is a tight three-piece that sound like the brainchild of Warpaint and Phantogram. The trio has been on tour supporting its latest release, a double A-side out now on Team Love Records. What a perfect dreary Saturday for show-going! Support tonight comes from garage-poppers M.A.G.S., Thee Oh Seas meets Primus-fuzz Kharlos, and the mysterious Alien Three. Ask a punk where the Glitterbox is and make sure you bring a donation for the touring band. Doors open at 6pm and doors close at 10pm sharp.

Krill

Tonight: Krill

Krill is a band with all the right buzz in all the right places. Hailing from Boston, they’ve garnered a super concrete East Coast fan base with their unique brand of what they simply deem “guitar rock.” They’ve settled into this mold of acceptance among avid followers of their label, Exploding In Sound, but they are totally okay with playing for the sake of playing to a crowd that will listen. Their latest release, A Distant Fist Unclenching, is a testament to their ability to create artful music that is balanced in both musicality and lyrical content. It’s grungy and dark, but equally playful when it comes to thematic elements and overall sound. I was lucky enough to catch the band on an all-star bill in Allston, Massachusetts this past September. Their set left me numb, but in the greatest way possible. Lucky for you, you can catch them in a[...]

Tonight: Pale Angels

Tonight: Pale Angels come through the Glitterbox with local support from JOHNS, Kharlos and a “v. new” Alien Three. Pale Angels put a fuzzy sheen on what are, at their core, solid guitar-driven pop songs. Reminds me of the appeal of bands like Nirvana a bit: they rip and tear through their songs, but you can still hum the melodies to yourself for a while after the fact. Doors at 6pm, music at 7pm, $7 for the touring band. Check out “In The Sunset” below.

Pleasure Leftists

Tonight: Pleasure Leftists

I was able to see Pleasure Leftists for the first time last year at Buffalo Iron Works as an opener for Cloud Nothings. The venue was jam packed and teeming with anxious attendees awaiting their opportunity to thrash around to the nihilistic, lo-fi punk of the headlining band. The members of Pleasure Leftists were a quiet presence while setting up and playing, mentioning only that they were from Cleveland and throwing polite thank you’s in between songs. But they had this way of commanding the entire room as soon as they struck a note. The dark, but alluring howl of lead singer Haley Morris worked in perfect harmony with the steadfast rhythm section and somewhat ominous guitar parts. The blend definitely had me (and everyone else) deeply entranced for their entire set. You can catch Pleasure Leftists tonight at the Glitterbox, along with Aaron and the Burrs, Softlines and Corliz[...]

Tonight: Slingshot Dakota

I was lucky enough to catch a set from Topshelf Records’ Slingshot Dakota the last time they rolled through Buffalo at Sugar City. Singer Carly Comando had a wicked sore throat, but powered through an energetic set full bolstered solely by bouncy keyboards and drums. For lack of a better word, it was really punk. Luckily for us, the duo is back in Buffalo tonight supported by Real People (who also played last time they were here), Cross Stitch, and Red Heat. The show is $5, doors are at 6:00pm, music starts at 7:00pm, and it will be over by 10:00. Ask a punk if you don’t know where the Glitterbox is. Tonight: La Luna

Nothing quite like a perfectly curated bill. Tonight at the Glitterbox: Calgary’s La Luna, supported by Sperm, Hot Tip, Fleshy Mounds and Alpha Hopper. These bands really are five fingers on one hand, whatever that means. La Luna is about 80 percent brutal assaults, 20 percent breakdowns and breathing room (maybe it’s more of a 90/10 split, 95/5, hard to say). The result: you aren’t necessarily drowning in noise, but you’re definitely getting waterboarded. That description stands for Sperm as well. I think so, anyway: we’re being treated to a “new lineup, new Sperm,” so it could be light beer and Simon & Garfunkel for all I know. Doubt it, though: their last tape (released in February) is still sitting on my desk and it still grinds with the best of ’em. Hot Tip, you guessed it, still rules, and if you’ve somehow missed ’em up to this point, you’re[...]

Tonight: Swimsuit Addition

Like they probably say in all those journalism classes I didn’t take: lead with the big news. Punk time is dead, be on time to the Glitterbox, and catch Chicago’s Swimsuit Addition tonight, supported by Newish Star, Mink and newbies Dildon’t. Doors open at 6pm, music starts at 7pm and will assuredly be over by 10 pm (shove that in the face of whiny friends/traitors who complain they can’t see a show on a school night). Swimsuit Addition makes me want to do this, but with full knowledge that if I stopped dancing they’d feed me to their pet spiders. Surfy, poppy and maybe rotten to the core: it’s telling that one of their tags on Bandcamp is “hellokittywithitseyegougedout.” Newish Star I love, and not simply because last time I caught them, they set the local record for most uses of the term “school shooting” on stage. It’s because they write[...]

Tonight: Del Paxton Vinyl Release Show

Today is a busy day!  Between Porch Fest, graduations, and what seems like a billion other shows at your disposal, this one might take the cake. Del Paxton is releasing their fantastic EP, Worst. Summer. Ever., on vinyl and is throwing a show to celebrate.  I don’t know about you, but those mint green records/t-shirts are calling my name. Backing up the Paxt tonight will be their buds in Living Room, Real People, and Newish Star. Ask a punk where the Glitterbox is and get there by 6:00pm.
