Lover – “Bones”

“Bones” is the latest from Melbourne-based musician Lover. Super stripped-down but not lacking in soul, the track is pretty much acoustic guitar and drums. This gives a lot of room to really showcase the impeccably recorded lyrics, which sounded like they were recorded on golden mics. Speaking to the track, Lover had this to say:   “Lyrically the song focuses on things of my past, with feelings of angst leaving my family back home in New Zealand, and trying to reconcile the fact that I won’t be spending as much time with them anymore.”   You can hear “Bones” below from Bandcamp, as well as on Spotify. The rest of the EP, Life In Secret, is available as well and worth the listen. Great example of superb range of sound while keeping in step with their vibe. If you’re interested in the visual medium, the music video is available on[...]

Violet UltraRay – “woods”

Keeping up with the forest theme from October’s “girl in a tree” (that we covered here), Violet UltraRay brings us her latest with “woods.” Based out of London and a self-described “dream pop shoegazer,” wailing guitars combine with those “under the water” vocals vibe to give a sense of feeling lost (or drowning… which I guess is sort of like being lost). Inspired by late night walks, “woods” certainly gives you a sense of dreamy solitude, which is something a walk in a forest might certainly inspire.   “woods” is available below via YouTube or on Spotify. I couldn’t find out much about the band from their IG which is just fine by me, sometimes we don’t deserve to have all of our questions answered and for musicians to have an air of mystery about them. Keep on rockin’!

SELL EVERYTHING – “Star Girl (ft. Patrica Lalor)”

Self-described “artist collective” bands are always a fun bunch. They have a very Mom-and-Pop feel, like they’re a bunch of hippies in a commune selling honey or something. SELL EVERYTHING doesn’t give off the commune vibe, but all of the other good vibes? Seems like they nail it. Based out of Dublin (the one in Ireland), their latest is “Star Girl,” featuring fellow countrywoman Patricia Lalor. This is probably the best 2:20 of funk-flecked electronica I’ve heard all week; the drum machines and lo-fi synth really make the track.   You can hear it below from YouTube or add it to your chill afterparty mix over on Spotify. Be sure to check out Patricia Lalor‘s offerings as well – her vocals are one of the most beautiful things I’ve heard this week.

Sisters – “I can’t see”

“I can’t see” is the latest track from Sisters, a half American/half British band. I’m unclear if the parentage of everyone involved is the union between a Yankee and a Brit or if some people are British and some are American, but I digress. The frenetic bass track that underpins the song through the first part is catchy as fuck and it eventually calms down for a bit before picking back up toward the end. I’m not sure what they classify themselves as, but this felt like the perfect amount of post punk for 2025 and, if their continued touring is any indication, probably in the years to come too.   You can hear “I can’t see” below from Soundcloud or over on Spotify. I was creeped out by the album art but after some time staring at it I dig it. It reminded me of a a cross between[...]

Sister Wanzala – “Winter Dominos”

Sister Wanzala describes their latest single as “cold funk” and … hopeful, romantic, or… tragic (depending on whether you squint). I wasn’t quite sure what I was in for, but I dove in and was greeted by the loveliest guitar tones and dulcet baritone vocals. They claim that everything is done at home on microphones that “should probably be in landfills,” but boy howdy does that not fit the description whatsoever.   “Winter Dominos” settles into an almost mournful groove and, dare I say, an almost jazzy mouthfeel? Somewhere between Alex G and Frank Sinatra almost feels like a cop out, but the more I say it the more it just makes sense and I stand by that assessment.   The Soundcloud embed is below, and the Spotify link can be found here. Be sure to add it to your winter blues playlist and give their back catalogue a listen[...]

RQTBL – “Joyce”

I was initially too blind to see what RQTBL stood for (Racquetball, for the uninitiated) but now I get it and I’m digging their latest single, “Joyce.” Probably about someone’s Mom or Grandma, right? Sounds like a Mom name. Nope, it’s about addiction and the toll it takes on your psyche (and we’re hear for it). Thrashing about with what I can only describe as diabolical sounding guitars, these Aussies are here to rock your face off and no I won’t elaborate further (just listen).   You can hear “Joyce” below from Bandcamp or over on Spotify. You can hear more of their sick punk tinged riffs and more on their 2025 album “Nosebleed Choir.” They very helpfully have their lyrics on their Bandcamp page for the song; I have a terrible time parsing lyrics sometimes!   Joyce by Racquetball

The Feather – “Two”

We last heard from The Feather back in April with their track “BB,” a single off of their album of the same name. Fast forward a few months and now we have “Two,” set to be part of BB DX -the deluxe version of the original BB. Initially recorded along with the original slate of tracks for the album, it feels like adult contemporary had a lovechild with indie pop. This is a deliberate choice, as per Thomas:   “…The chorus reminds me a bit of some Phil Collins vocal lines, and it brings back memories of the music my dad used to play at home when I was a kid. The song is about being in a relationship, unconditional love, the fear of losing it, and above all, the bond between two people in the darkest moments.”   Honestly, the synth and guitar with the tight drum fills did[...]

Fuckleberry Hinn – “Neither/Nor”

I’m always in for a good name pun and Fuckleberry Hinn delivers in spades (if you’re missing it I’m not sure how to help other than look up Twark Main or Com Truise). Name aside, Fuckleberry Hinn’s latest track lives up to the expectations I placed on them after seeing their name; “Neither/Nor” could have just been a whatever song and I still would have enjoyed listening, but thankfully that’s not the case!   The vocals in the beginning reminded me a little bit of one of my personal favorites, The Dodos. Acoustic guitar leads into a whole mess of sounds that feel almost chaotic but are grounded by the repetition of the lyric “Neither/Nor.” It eventually ends on a fade to black, which feels appropriate – though I can’t say why, it just does.   You can hear “Neither/Nor” embedded below on YouTube, as well as Apple Music and Spotify. Fun fact:[...]

Church Ladies – “I’m a Zombie”

Church Ladies are on a quest, but give conflicting accounts of exactly what that is while maintaining two things: they will “COMBAT THE DARK LORD 100% OF THE TIME OR YOUR MONEY BACK” and releasing catchy as fuck tracks. The duo’s latest is “I’m a Zombie” and it’s two minutes of jangly hopping-up-and-down house-party-type music. Go give it a listen and if your day doesn’t feel at least 5% better… Idk man, try listening again.   You can hear the track below from Spotify and… not really anywhere else I could find. The Dark Lord’s forces must be hard at work to keep the music of Church Ladies away from us, hopefully that changes and we can find their music everywhere soon.

Picture House – “View From Heaven”

“View From Heaven” is a hooky dreampop nod to Brian Wilson from UK-based band Picture House. Appropriately poppy and coming in under three minutes seems like a good ode to the guy who helped put the “California Sound” on the map. The guitars are jangly and, dare I say, twee? As per the band “View From Heaven” is also a “…nostalgic ode to missed opportunities and alternative paths through life…” It feels like the voice of the song definitely loved and lost someone too, which gives a nice emotional gut punch that (at least for me) always gives me one more reason to love a song.   You can hear it below from the band’s Soundcloud conveniently embedded below, as well as Spotify and Apple Music.   Picture House · View From Heaven

nazire – “junebug”

Based out Istanbul, nazire brings us her latest single “junebug,” released in anticipation of her next album glitchfolk. With “junebug,” nazire has crafted a well tuned machine of shoegaze; phuzzed out guitars layered with drums that pull back to let nazire’s vocals breathe. If you listen to some of her earlier tracks you’ll find some electronica and lo-fi leanings that give a fuller picture of her musical journey. It’s always fun to connect the dots and seeing musicians grow their sound, which is easier now than ever with everything being online.   You can hear “junebug” below from YouTube or over on Spotify. Keep your ears out for her album glitchfolk and check out her back catalogue if you’ve enjoyed what you heard today! I usually drop a follow on an artist via their Spotify and/or their socials to keep abreast of their comings and goings.

Karlmer – “Blackout”

“Blackout” is the newest track from Australian artist formerly known as Fly Trap, but now goes by Karlmer. They made the move to Germany at the beginning of the year. Other than not being an island, I guess Germany helps with expanding your reach, so good on them!   “Blackout” is a LOT of guitar – like almost nonstop; the first thirty seconds feature some particularly blistering licks. When saying that they played “Rock” music with a capital ‘R’ I assumed it was a typo because we don’t generally capitalize common nouns. *buzzer* Wrong! This definitely falls under Rock and deserves the gravitas of a capital. Serving a twofer of alarm and a call to action, the band had this to say about the meaning behind the song:   “The song is about a blackout in the modern day. We don’t have survival skills anymore like direction and find what[...]

Mirrorball – “Story of the Ice”

“Story of the Ice” is an apropos name for a track that I’m surprised isn’t about Buffalo (because no one else gets ice and no one ever used ice in the non-literal sense for a song). I’m never going to be mad about another dream pop band to add to my repertoire and Mirrorball is no exception; they pulled me in hook line and sinker with super slick bass licks and the perfect amount of synth (if you look back at some of my previous articles, you’ll see I hate it when synth is misused). Made up of Alexandra Johnstone and Scott Watson, the duo plays around Johnstone’s super soft vocals – managing to throw in a LOT of sound while doing it quietly (if that makes sense).   From what I could tell Johnstone and Watson haven’t put out an album as Mirrorball, but have a smattering of singles[...]

Pocket Full of Crumbs – “Heaven Take Me”

“Heaven Take Me” is the latest single from San Francisco based Pocket Full of Crumbs. It’s the first track off of the split single shared with fellow Californians Kan Kan. It’s a delightfully phuzzed-out affair that, like a perfect season of television, doesn’t overstay its welcome and sticks the landing. At just over two minutes it gives off punk vibes, but this is a shoegazer’s shoegaze song.   You can hear the track below on Bandcamp, as well as Spotify and Apple Music. Be sure to check out the other three tracks on the split with Kan Kan via Cherub Dream Records. I’m always *surprised_Pikachu.gif* when an artist I enjoy is on the same label as another that I enjoy, but I’m sure that’s no accident. If you’re feeling the vibe with PFoC, I KAN say without a doubt you’ll have the similar warm and fuzzies for KAN KAN.  [...]

LITE – “SUNSET feat. Yvette Young”

LITE has released their latest track “SUNSET,” a collab with Yvette Young of Covet fame. I started off thinking this was a gentle lullaby but was proved wrong within the first 30 seconds when the guitar breaks into shit that guitars shouldn’t even be able to do (#mathrock). There’s a weird time signature too – something in like… 16:2077. A cursory internet search will show you that Yvette Young is an insanely talented instrumentalist and guitars (and guitarists) everywhere are afraid of her. LITE isn’t, however, as they’re embarking as the opening act for Covet on an upcoming string of dates.   You can hear “SUNSET” below from YouTube as well as Spotify. Don’t forget to carry the zero on this dope math track and listen to it in *LOSSLESS AUDIO*. Honestly, I have a hard time telling the difference… Do y’all hear anything different?
