Jenny Kern – “Feel It Again”

Jenny Kern makes that music you hear leaking from the inside of a nightclub and have no choice but to further investigate. Her latest single, “Feel it Again,” will have you scratching on the door, pleading for entry and once you finally get in, it was everything you imagined and more. The Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter sounds as if she’s singing the soundtrack of Shangri-La, with shimmering synths atop of a wild bassline. “Feel it Again” arrived on May 6th, 2022 just in time for the first normal summer in years, ushering in nostalgia that I’m sure we’re all ready to feel again. Silver Liz – “Thousand”

With the weight of a leaf, Carrie Wagner from the Brooklyn-based duo Silver Liz effortlessly floats over Matt Wagner’s gentle guitar strums. The married couple is doing what any artist dreams of doing and they’re making beautiful works of art together, most recently with their single “Thousand.” The serine track is the second single for their (so far) untitled sophomore album to be released later in the year of 2022. The final 30 seconds of “Thousand” are covered in layer upon layer of melody, giving off sounds of beautiful, effected destruction. Stream it on Spotify and Apple Music Silver Liz · Thousand

Ryan Luce Finds “California Gold” On New Single

Buffalo ex-pat Ryan Luce has hit a vein of pure Americana goodness on his new single “California Gold” off his forthcoming album and you should get it in your ears pronto. Shuffling earnestly with just  a sweet whiff of melancholy, some killer slide guitar lines and intertwined harmonies that conjure sensations of 70’s country and Buckingham Nicks, “California Gold” is indeed AM radio gold; timeless and bittersweetly irresistible. “California Gold” is the title track of Luce’s forthcoming album that comes out April 26, with a homecoming  show scheduled for May 4th at The Tabernacle.

IDE – “Flight Patterns”

Brooklyn’s IDE lays down some ferocious lyricism on his new track “Flight Patterns.” Produced by Lucky Loopiani, “Flight Patterns” has a wonderful, classic hip hop beat centered around some plucked Asian strings. It sounds heavily influenced by the work of Wu Tang leader RZA. Behind the mic IDE is boastful, contemplative and gritty, relaying his New York spirit in lines like “I’m just lost in the maze, but I’ll find my way.” His flow weaves between crass and rapid as he lays down a fiery performance. For hip hop heads looking for more IDE, his newest project “Breathe Easy” drops this month. Give “Flight Patterns” a listen below.

Tonight: BAMBARA

Brooklyn’s BAMBARA are finishing up their largely southern and midwestern SWARM-promoting tour circuit within the Empire State. This noisy three-piece plays punk, noise rock with a bluesy, southern twang. BAMBARA, at its core, sounds like a less sibilant METZ mashed with Dads’ ballsy instrumentals. Their songwriting and live performances earned them a spot in this year’s SXSW roster, and they achieved a third place rating in Paste Magazine’s “The 20 Best Bands We Saw at SXSW 2016.” This might make up for fellow SXSW buzzband, Bethlehem Steel, and their bad luck last weekend by being unable to play at Nietzsche’s due to van trouble. Tonight’s show is at The Glitterbox. Supporting acts include Pretty Girls Make Graves-like Alpha Hopper, the garage delinquents in Hot Tip, and the punk rockers forming Facility Men. Doors are at 6. Bring $6.

damian – Hazy 85

Former Buffalo now Brooklyn-based folk artist damian just released a spirited yet sweetly melancholic album of instrumental 80’s covers boiled down to the barest of bones.  Armed with a Casio keyboard and a roster of 80’s heavyweights from the Holy Trinity of Jackson, Madonna and Prince to Van Halen, Bananarama, The Bangles, Fleetwood Mac, and Billy Idol, damian is simultaneously merciless in his minimalist approach yet keen to get to the melodic and human heart at the center of each song. Unabashedly retro, Hazy 85 conjures memories of ancient home computers, vintage video game consoles,  and FM hit radio while reconfiguring his 80’s favorites into bit and byte soundtracks. It’s almost hilarious how thoroughly effective damian is at conjuring David Lee Roth’s growl or the otherworldly sweetness of Stevie Nicks through his vintage synth. In fact his cover of the 1982 Fleetwood Mac hit “Gypsy” is one of the clear highlights of the[...]
