Herd Fest 2015: Day 3 (Part 1)

Day 3 of Herd Fest proved to be the young festival’s biggest day yet (so big, in fact, that we made the photo galleries two parts), featuring five loaded showcases spread all over town. The afternoon saw local record shops Record Theatre (along with Steak & Cake Records) and Black Dots host in-store and, in the case of the latter, outdoor patio bills. Candace Camuglia was once again on hand to shoot all of the action. Check out some select shots below and for a full gallery, visit the festival’s Facebook page. Keep an eye out soon for a part 2 gallery from Herd Fest’s Day 3.

Herd Fest 2015: Day 2

Herd Fest 2015 officially kicked into its second gear last Friday night with three loaded showcases littered over Allentown. First off, though, long time local photog, Michael Mulley, opened up his “People That Rock” exhibit over at Sugar City on Niagara St.. The 20 + years in the making gallery featured photos of Henry Rollins, David Bowie, Social Distortion, and more. Later on that night, Nietzsche’s, Duke’s and Hardware were taken over by showcases from Harvest Sum, Deep Thinka Records, and the Cool Dad crew, respectively. Our festival photographer, Candace Camuglia, was once again deep into all of the action. Check out some select shots from the night below, and for a full gallery of Day 2, visit the festival’s facebook page.

This past Monday, Vancouver punk outfit, White Lung, brought its frenzied live show to the Mohawk Place. Local punks Utah Jazz kicked the night off with a short but sweet set, followed by some blasting hardcore tracks from Obliterations. White Lung commanded the show with its squealing guitars and piercing vocals, keeping the crowd moving the whole time. Check out our photos below. Tyler, The Creator at Town Ballroom (6/14/15)

With the Odd Future collective in flux, the group’s clown prince ringleader, Tyler, The Creator, returned to Buffalo Sunday night for a sold-out performance that saw the rapper dig deep into his latest record, Cherry Bomb. Contributing blog photographer, Candace Camuglia, was on hand to snap some pics of Tyler, opener and fellow/former Odd Future member Taco, and a somewhat subdued (for an OF show at least) crowd. For a full recap of the show, check out our review here.

Diarrhea Planet w/ Left and Right, Sleepy Hahas at Mohawk Place (3/30/15)

If you missed last night’s show, I am so, so sorry. Monday night, soon to be rock and roll legends, Diarrhea Planet, absolutely ripped apart Mohawk Place. You may remember when Nashville group did the same last year, being hailed as one of the best performances in Buffalo in 2014 by buffaBLOG writer Michael Morretti. DP definitely did not disappoint this time around either. Sleepy Hahas opened up the show with a very jam oriented set, featuring lots of psychedelic elements, as well as a lot of electronics and synthesizers. The set featured amazing custom lighting done by Shawn Lewis, aka local electrofreak, Lesionread. Following the Hahas was touring Philadelphia rock and roll act, Left and Right, who also put on an incredibly entertaining set of raucous garage rock While both opening acts were impressive, its no surprise that Diarrhea Planet commanded the night. There is just a certain energy[...]

buffaBLOG 5th Birthday Party @ Nietzsche’s (3/28/15)

The blog crew ringed in our 5th birthday this Saturday night with a packed house and a bill full of Buffalo’s (and one of Utica’s) very best acts. On hand to shoot the evening was blog friend and local photographer, Nate Peracciny, capturing sets from Zak Ward, Comfy, Applennium, and many more, in addition to candid shots of many of the night’s supportive audience members. I say this after every one of our parties, but this was my favorite yet. Check out a handful of Nate’s pictures below, and for the full gallery, please click here. Photos by Nate Peracciny

Torche w/ Nothing and WRONG at Mohawk Place (3/23/15)

It’s shows like this that really make me happy that Mohawk Place is back in action. There is just a certain vibe there that other venues downtown can’t really recreate. This past Monday,  Florida sludge rock titans, Torche, brought their tour to town, along with WRONG and Nothing. Torche and crew were one of the loudest shows I have ever been to, and it will also go down as one of my favorites. Not only was this the first show that I shot for the blog, but every single one of the bands seemed to be having a blast, even more so than usual. WRONG and Torche put on two of the heaviest sets I have seen in a long time, while Nothing put on easily the best live set of shoegaze music I have seen, period. Toronto’s resident romantics, Stars, continued their North American tour in support the band’s latest, and very danceable new album, No One is Lost. The band recently performed at San Franciso’s famed venue, The Fillmore, and west-coast contributor, photographer Sean Mikula, was on hand to shoot the band. Check out some photos and the complete set list below. Setlist “From The Night” “Ageless Beauty” “We Don’t Want Your Body” “Backlines” “You Keep Coming Up” “A Song Is a Weapon” “This is the Last Time” “Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It” “Look Away” “Dead Hearts” “Trap Door” “One More Night (Your Ex-Lover Remains Dead)” “Elevator Love Letter” “Take Me to the Riot” “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” “No One is Lost:” Encore: “Are You OK?” “Nothing I Can Do”

buffaBLOG Rochester Showcase @ the Bug Jar (11/22/14)

A little over a week ago, the blog luckily escaped #snowvember to put on our first showcase in Rochester at the Bug Jar. On hand for the evening were three of the 585’s finest in the Absolutes, Buffalo Sex Change, and Harmonica Lewinski, in addition to Buffalo’s Mallwalkers and DJ Tight Mike. If you happened to miss the show, or are still a little fuzzy on the details, check out blog photographer Greg Jones‘ full gallery here.

CHVRCHES/Interpol/Lykke Li @ Oakland’s Fox Theater (9/18/14-9/20/14)

Our former contributing photographer, Sean Mikula, sadly left town a couple years ago. After a stop in Chicago, he eventually settled in the Bay Area in California. While we won’t be seeing him shooting at the Ballroom any time soon, we are happy to have him back, submitting some great shots from his concert travels on the west coast. He recently shot a triple feature over a September weekend of CHVRCHES, Interpol, and Lykke Li at Oakland’s Fox Theater, and we are happy to share some of his pictures. Keep an eye out for future photo spreads from Sean. To check out some of additional work, visit his website here. Photo Credit – Sean Mikula

Edgefest at the Outer Harbor (8/10/14)

103.3 the Edge’s annual Edgefest put the cap on a successful season of the Outer Harbor Concert series this past Sunday. Headliner Weezer played a welcomed, mostly old-school heavy collective of songs, much to the audience’s nostalgic pleasure. Brand New played a messy, yet fun set, while long time cult act, the Sheila Devine, and the home town heroes of Pentimeno provide stellar early support. For a complete write up of the show, check out Ron Walczyk’s full review here, but if you prefer a more visual reminder, then take a peak the gallery submitted by contributing photographer Andy Deluca below. Kerfuffle at Canalside (7/26/14)

This past Saturday, Buffalo’s infant radio station, Alternative Buffalo 107.7, debuted their inaugural Kerfuffle on a crowd of thousands down at Canalside in spectacular fashion. The one-day music festival had a lot going in its favor that day: nearly rain free weather (Artpark was shaking its head all night), a bill of fresh and relevant acts (something that normally does not go hand in hand with summer music here in the city), and a revitalized waterfront that continues to provide the perfect back drop to many summer nights in Buffalo. Now, for a full review of Kerfuffle, read Ryan Wolf’s review here, but if you prefer a more visual recap, contributing photographer Andy Deluca was on hand capture all of the action and energy on Kerfuffle’s stage. Last Saturday at the Gypsy Parlor, Fredonia-bred, steam folk foursome, Mr. Boneless, celebrated the release of their debut LP, Cutting Teeth, a ten track collection of backwoods blues-punk. Joining them was crust-Americana act, Pine Fever. Staff photographer Robert Emhof was on hand that night to shoot the show. Check out his pictures below. The Tins Album Release Show at Buffalo Iron Works (7/11/14)

The beer, poutine, and local bands were on point at Buffalo Iron Works this past Friday night. A ticket got you a free copy of the Tins’ new EP, Young Blame, in addition to a view of the baseball game’s fireworks from the back patio. Energetic frontman Matthew Lippman of Brimstone Blondes revealed upcoming LP release plans as the four-piece kicked the evening off. Guitar pedal eccentric duo Eric Kendall and Nick Gordon of the Actors played two sets in between openers, while Airctaft lead singer Justin John Smithhad not one, but three mics attached to his stand to optimize sound quality. As for the Tins’ performance, their hyper fans bopped along to the new songs all night long. Check out our gallery below of the entire evening. Written and Shot by Taryn Alper.
