Dead Horse Beats – “Dive”

We stumbled upon the video for Dead Horse Beats‘ new track, “Dive” and we think it’s worth a watch. The video was created over a two year period; the visuals to the track tell a somber tale of heartbreak. A vintage camera shot paints a picture of a relationship past – then the video takes a turn into the HD present. Not to mention, the trio has a contemporary sound that sits somewhere in between the dance stylings of Cashmere Cat, with a folky tinge a la Bon Iver. Who says music videos are dead? Not Dead Horse Beats – check out “Dive” Below.

Shy Luv – “Joyrider”

If you’re a fan of disco meets funk-punk meets electronic, we recommend listening to UK duo Shy Luv. They are a perfect musical mix-up of a plethora of influences – from Talking Heads to Hot Chip and anywhere in between –  while still feeling distinctly 2016/17. “Joyrider” is where you should start… It combines clacking percussion with funky bass lines and breathy vocals. If you dig it, stream “Joyrider” on Spotify. Jake Cook – “The Raging Twenties”

Don’t be fooled by Jake Cook‘s shouts – his latest project is actually a poignant analysis of what it means to be a struggling 20 something. In 1:58, “The Raging Twenties” makes use of barely-tuned guitars, a Casio keyboard beat, and disgusting fuzz tones in a sardonic, face-melting look on the adult blues. Fans of Atom & His Package, Prince Daddy & The Hyena, or Touche Amore would find Jake irresistible. Give Jake a visit on his Tumblr. Whales & This Lake – “World B”

Norwegian act Whales & This Lake have been on fire lately, landing on Spotify’s big Viral Hit, Weekend Buzz, and several other playlists. We’ve caught the itch too – “World B” is an infectious synth-pop jam that makes use of deep bass synths, a driving beat, mysterious vocals, and an inescapable chorus. Fans of Bombay Bicycle Club or Passion Pit will feel right at home. Check out the music video for “World B” here. TEN FÉ – “Overflow”

London act TEN FÉ charmed us with the 80s synth vibes in “Overflow.” Fans of The Smiths, Tears for Fears, or The National will appreciate this particular duo – they mash together danceable beats, Morrissey-esque baritone vocals, and overall good vibes… Not to mention, there is something about this track that is quite hypnotic. “Overflow” is available for streaming on Spotify. Dakota – “Icon”

Amsterdam act Dakota hit us up with their latest single, “Icon,” and we’ve been hooked ever since. A countless number of bands have been described as “indie pop with an edge” – while this is an apt description for Dakota, the quartet really excels at writing the kind of chill out music that makes you want to melt into your couch. Fans of Warpaint, Tancred, or Hop Along would be into Dakota. Check Dakota out on Spotify. Psychic Shakes – “Wasting Time”

After discovering “Wasting Time” in our inbox, we discovered that it’s about, “feeling overwhelmed from the everyday responsibilities of life, not having enough time, and a general fear of growing older too quickly.” Beyond an immediate ability to relate to this song, we dug UK act Psychic Shake‘s use of funky lo-fi grooves, surfy vibes, and mystical vocals. Fans of HALA, Parquet Courts, or Tame Impala might dig this tune. Check “Wasting Time” out on Bandcamp too. Jordan Moe – “Bridges”

Californian solo artist Jordan Moe finally struck out on his own and “Bridges” is what resulted… Good move Jordan! “Bridges” is an ultra-sincere track that makes use of twinkling acoustic guitar, reverby atmospherics, and Jordan’s oh-so-relatable musings about following your dreams and pursuing happiness. Fans of The Front Bottoms, Head North, or early-aughts emo would love this tune. Moe’s stuff is available on Bandcamp for a “pay what you want” rate. Special Thumbs – “Leave Home/Get High”

Special Thumbs recently released an EP called Pollen, upon which “Leave Home/Get High” resides. Perfect for any stoner (or simply a lover of indie rock), “Leave Home/Get High” boasts true indie rock hooks, vintage organ tones, and lyrics that speak to any connoisseur of mary jane. Fans of The Growlers, The Dodos, and Kurt Vile will be pleased. Check out “Leave Home/Get High” via YouTube below.

Michael Hollis – “Oh October”

Michael Hollis is a prolific musician, but recently struck out on his own to record his own solo debut. “Oh October” is the culmination of this journey, inspired by the loss of a few friends and the end of an increasingly dysfunctional relationship. The result is a twangy folk offering reminiscent of Fleet Foxes or Balance Problems with a touch of angularity like Weatherbox. Keep an eye out for Hollis’ debut EP, due out January 2017. Husky – “Late Night Store”

Melbourne duo Husky caught our attention with their latest single, “Late Night Store.” After spending some time living in Berlin, the duo has returned to Australian shores with a new single and a new outlook. We dug “Late Night Store” for it’s light indie rock vibe, Husky’s relatable vocals, and background atmospherics. Fans of Phoenix or Foster The People will like this tune. Learn more about Husky via their website. Luke De-Sciscio – “To Carry You”

Luke De-Sciscio’s latest, “To Carry You,” is the perfect compliment to the bleak days following the warmth of Thanksgiving day. De-Sciscio’s powerful falsetto most certainly carries this song, riding high and delicate atop his folky singer/songwriter guitar strumming. Fans of Bon Iver, Thom Yorke, and Fleet Foxes will find solace in his down-home vibes. Luke’s latest offering, Gossamer Rose, is available on Bandcamp for a “name your price” option. MELT – “Rewind”

MELT’S newest single “Rewind” off the band’s new album is the current earworm for emo enthusiasts and lo-fi lovers alike. The New Jersey-based foursome tells the tried and true tale of youthful restlessness coupled with nostalgia over lost love. Through waves of hazy, layered vocals, singer Dylan White laments the best of times over a bedrock of powerful guitar arpeggios and a steady drumbeat. This song has all the makings of the soundtrack to a good Friday night existential crisis. If you’re hungry for more, the full album Riffer drops today via Danger Collective Records. Father John Misty – “Holy Hell”

Funny story: went for my long overdue physical the other day (it’s been a few years, and the one I had scheduled in March got postponed after my heart attack… d’oh!) and the nurse had a few recently added extra questions at the end. “These last 2 weeks… have you felt depressed or unable to feel joy or enjoyment? Anxious and unable to sleep? We’re asking everybody.” I had to bust out laughing and respond “well… those are some loaded questions…”* Clearly the last two weeks have been a little rough, and unlike anything I can remember (fact: I’m in my early 40’s and I ain’t ever seen fecal matter like this before), probably because two weeks ago the course of this country was set for DANGEROUS WATERS, and folks are trying to cope with the new now however they can. Some folks are probably still on the couch staring into[...]

Governor – “Headphones”

Boston act Governor just released their debut single, “Headphones,” and we think it’s worth your time. “Headphones” is just one of the songs on their most recent release, A Commonwealth Songbook, which came out earlier this month. The band uses straight forward indie rock with tinges of wonk to sculpt a style similar to Death Cab for Cutie or Modest Mouse. Check out Governor on Bandcamp.
