Best Behavior – “Say”

For the frontman of Best Behavior, Alex Gruenburg, pop has always been an indulgence. The band’s latest single, “Say,” is all about giving in to that guilty pleasure and embracing what you love. The foursome was drawn together by an affinity for eclecticism, bringing in the groove of hip hop, the liveliness of surf rock, and the neat composure of Britpop. They clearly have their formula down pat, pumping out guitar-driven sunshine with every beat. Plastic Picnic – “Berkeley”

The Brooklyn transplants in Plastic Picnic serve up their best cinematic indie rock with their single “Berkeley.” This track is at the forefront of the band’s debut EP, set for release this fall. Combining soaring 80’s guitar lines, dreamy falsetto, and some soulful gusto, “Berkeley” comes across as equal parts moving and soothing. Formed from two Seattle duos who met up in the Empire state, the four-piece fit together like a perfectly cohesive puzzle, bonding over a love of stirring lyricism, soundscaping guitars, and analog synth. Inner Wave – “Eclipse”

If dreamy synth-wave is your desired soundtrack for a day in the sun, look no further than Inner Wave’s latest single, “Eclipse.” Combining elements of Latin jazz, psych-rock, and dream pop, the L.A. five piece bring something new to the table to sink your teeth into. The band has been together since their preteen years, and with that comes sense of unity and self-awareness only to be found in a group of friends that survived the tedious awkwardness of middle school. Taking cues from the likes of Tame Impala and Lil Ugly Mane, Inner Waves pair soaring falsetto with ponderous guitar lines, groove bass and luminous synths. “Eclipse” is the prequel to the release of their upcoming album Underwater Pipe Dreams, due out this August. Forgotten Sons – “Blackened Heart”

Forgotten Sons, hailing from The Shetland Isles, Scotland released “Blackened Heart” in between work on projects. The band first dropped their debut EP Just So You Know in 2015, and are in the process of working on their second EP Changed Days, which is due out in late 2017. Full of raw energy, “Blackened Heart” blasts loud with distorted riffs and gritty vocals that are reminiscent of punk and hard rock. Henry Nowhere – “Don’t Care Where”

Los Angeles-based Henry Nowhere is gearing up for the release of his digital 7″, due out on September 1st. Originally from Oakland, Nowhere moved to Los Angeles with Day Wave, a band he has worked with for the past few years as a bassist. Both songs “Don’t Care Where” and “come Back From LA” were recorded in Nowhere’s Oakland apartment. The single comes as a warm experience, with light vocals and rolling, gently picked guitar riffs. Smoke Season – “Good Days”

Los Angeles-based Smoke Season released a new music video for their song “Good Days.” The duo has done a ton in terms of activism on social issues including traveling to Standing Rock, North Dakota to support DAPL protests and releasing music videos focusing on topics including the bullying of LGBTQ youth, support for veterans, and immigration reform. “Good Days” deviates from the social activism and focuses more on the past.  Vocals from Gabrielle Wortman come as meaningful and aim straight for the heart. The backing instrumentals give the feeling of passing time as they come in slow and melodic. CHUCK – “New Yorker”

Bedroom indie rocker CHUCK gives us his satirical take on life as a New York City dweller in his recent single release, “New Yorker.” The song provides a story-like retelling of his move to the city and day to day life in the metropolis famous for restlessness and sullen strangers. Blending a host of influences from alternative, emo, and new wave, CHUCK nails down a sound that’s uniquely feel-good and genuinely entertaining to listen to. He keeps things light with playful horn lines, shooting synths, and spirited vocals, simultaneously poking fun and pointing out some of the city’s highlights. New York City producer/singer/songwriter Lissa Lo proves she can hang with the best of them with her latest single “All I Need.” The track, featuring Patrick Dunn, shows off her affinity for electropop with layered vocals, flowing synths, and a bumping back beat. Any indication of her self-taught beginnings are long gone, as she masters song structure with natural progression and ebb and flow. Inspired by artists like Lana Del Rey, Lorde, and The Weeknd, Lo shows she has an understanding of pop that runs deeper than a catchy hook or energetic beat. Pure Mids – “These Days”

Los Angeles-based trio Pure Mids just released “These Days,” their second single as a group. The new act is composed of multi-instrumentalist William Gonzalez, multi-instrumentalist Steven Martinez, and drummer Daniel Jurado. “These Days” comes packaged as a mixture of classic indie technique, neo-psychedelia and shoegaze. The guitars on the track are effect-laden, but sound smooth and on point as they roll onward. Paired with the relaxed lead vocals of Gonzalez, the combination becomes an easy-going experience. Somehow – “While the Days Go By”

Somehow released the first single “While the Days Go By” off the project Hidden Memories, a new album released by the band on June 9th via Toolong Records. Following up the release of The Desert of Wasted Time, “While the Days Go By” carries a similar energy to the 2016 album. Erwan Pépiot and Aurélie Tremblay prove to be a nice contrast with her light vocals backing his bass heavy voice. The diversity of sounds on the track bridge the gap between indie and pop.
