Tonight: Lockedown

Katie Locke, better known under the moniker Lockedown, is no stranger to the electro-pop scene in Buffalo. Her debut album Taste is a convincing expression of sensory driven memories. The wide array of synth tones, vocal effects and rhythm explore both space and depth within the sound, which I really appreciate (best experienced out loud through quality speakers). Though the instrumentals bring a sense of lightness and whimsy, there’s enough backbone in the core melodies and vocal styling to really take hold of you. My favorite track off the album ,”Cracked”, illustrates this perfectly. Catch Lockedown tonight at Milkie’s alongside The Nigh and Nate Cox. Doors are at 8pm, $5 entry.

The Nigh – Fluorescent Sun

The Nigh is secretly sneaking into your midnight streams, already too close for comfort, of course. Hailing from Buffalo, New York, The Nigh does our music scene certain justice with their dark release, Fluorescent Sun. The LP as a whole is grey, bleak, and watery. The cover art depicts a “white hole” rather than black, prompting the onlooker/listener to wonder if, sarcastically, that bright something was something always to be out of reach. “…” ushers the wondering wanderer from that thought to a blissfully black fifty-second track that ends in an exciting synth flourish. Quieted, “I’ll Go Missing” kicks in. It’s a spacious, slightly funky track. The vocals bounce between each headphone. “We could run away just long enough to say I’d go missing,” is the lyrical lick of the song. It’s delivered as if the singer’s ready to run. The chorus is a solid mix of distorted guitar, ringing[...]

Tonight: Rustic Radio, The Nigh, Cosmic Shakedown

Musical diversity is the name of the game at Gypsy Parlor tonight. You wouldn’t want to eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner (unless that thing was pizza) and you wouldn’t want to see the same band with different faces playing three sets in a row. Tonight, each band will bring their own unique style to the stage and do whatever they can to rock your bones. Rustic Radio takes the stripped down feel of rocking around a campfire and mates it with deep, soulful lead vocals that pierce into your being. Dipping their brush in the blues and spraying it over a canvas of rock, they flay audiences blazing originals, and supplement them with unique takes on cover songs. You will be drawn to the stage, and if anything, the vocals will never let go of your ear. You can call it shoegaze, but you’ll be doing[...]
