Tonight: Contemporary Color at the North Park Theatre

Tonight, the North Park Theatre will be hosting a special screening of the Ross Brothers’ documentary Contemporary Color in collaboration with Cultivate Cinema Circle. The 2016 film documents the 2015 concerts organized by David Byrne to celebrate the highly “sophisticated folk art form” known as color guard, the athletic dance routines featured during high school and college game halftimes that accompany marching bands, in this context substituting indie bands for the marching bands. Featuring performances by 2017 Record Store Day Ambassador St. Vincent, Nelly Furtado, tune-yards, Dev Hynes, How To Dress Well, Lucious, Zola Jesus, Beastie Boy Ad Rock, and color guards from across the country, Contemporary Color looks looks musically, visually, and emotionally intense, and worth checking out on the book screen with the sound turned up like they do it at the North Park. Tickets are $10.50 and show starts at 7pm.

Record Store Day 2017 is Tomorrow

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Record Store Day, the international celebration of vinyl, physical media and the indie record stores that sell returns tomorrow with celebrations happening locally at Buffalo’s surviving record shops. Whether you brave the early morning lines for the Record Store Day special goodies you’ve scouted in advance or plan on some leisurely shopping, bonhomie, and live music later in the day after the rush subsides, enjoy yourselves (“It’s a celebration!”) and be sure to spend some money to keep these treasured local resources going: Record Theatre will be having their annual Record Store Day blowout at their remaining location at Main and Lafayette from 9 AM til 9 PM with the line forming Friday night I imagine. Grammy Award winner St. Vincent returns to Western New York less than a year after her spectacular show last April at Babeville for a sold out show tonight at Rochester’s Water Street Music Hall, and I can’t lie to you, I am vibrating at a higher frequency with anticipation. St. Vincent, aka Texas native Annie Clark, has been steadily building momentum ever since her debut in 2007, and with her eponymous album last year, she found commercial and critical acclaim while confirming that she’s today’s Bowie; ie an ever evolving and shape-shifting artist willing to take her art apart and build something new and better (or at least interesting) with each iteration (until you put out Glass Spider). St. Vincent – “Bad Believer”

In advance of the release of a deluxe edition of her eponymous 2014 album, St. Vincent aka Annie Clark, just dropped one of it’s four bonus tracks, “Bad Believer.” Soaring, accessible, and a tad victorious, “Bad Believer” makes for a fine coda to an incredibly successful 2014 for Annie, which included a critically acclaimed album and tour (including a memorable stop at Asbury Hall) and an excellent appearance on SNL. The deluxe edition of St. Vincent arrives in stores February 9, and Annie returns to Western New York March 5 for a show at Water Street Music Hall in Rochester.

Saturday night, the packed house at Babeville was privileged to experience a magical night of music and art when indie wunderkind St. Vincent returned to Buffalo with Brooklyn ambient guitarist Noveller. Folks from far and wide (a few blokes were up from Dallas specifically for the show) and local devotees converged on the re-purposed old church on Delaware and Tupper for worship of a different kind and were given ample reason to from start to finish. Brooklyn based guitarist Sarah Lipstate, aka Noveller, took us to church early with an enchanting set of ambient guitar rock, building a sea of sound with her lone guitar with loops, effects, drone, and reverb that took full advantage the acoustically vibrant space. The emotion drenched and deeply melodic compositions swirled and mesmerized while building to an impressive climax reminiscent of Sigur Ros at their most dramatic, with Lipstate deploying a bow to get[...]

There’s nothing quite like seeing an artist’s bold vision come to fruition as they carve out a space for themselves that feels comfortably unfamiliar, defying traditional genre classification, and most importantly, forcing us to think about music in a novel way. Through four albums as St. Vincent, singer/multi-instrumentalist  Annie Clark has consistently kept listeners guessing, crafting a vividly experimental sound that often juxtaposes celestial arrangements with jarring, manic guitar solos. A supremely talented  musician and visionary, Annie Clark has always had a “future is now” vibe about her, and on St. Vincent’s eponymous current album, she’s never been more daring. St. Vincent returns to Buffalo 2 years after her magnificent show at the Town Ballroom for a hotly anticipated and totally sold out show tonight at Babeville’s Asbury Hall.
