Tonight: Sonny Baker

Sonny Baker is set to celebrate the release of his new EP tonight at Mohawk Place. Baker’s Flesh it Out is soulful like, well, Pavement meets Ryan Adams. Baker (member of lots of bands) will perform will perform with his new trio which features members of Lazlo Hollyfeld, Rhubarb, Gravy, and more. I’ve loved Softlines from first listen and they don’t play enough shows. On the other hand, the ever prolific Newish Star just dropped a newish album and will be playing this gig too. Bright Eyes-esque Andy Pothier will also be there. Honestly, I heard him at Herd Fest and thought he was Conor Oberst. Mohawk opens its doors for the gig at 8pm and its $5 to get in.

Tonight: Pleasure Leftists

I was able to see Pleasure Leftists for the first time last year at Buffalo Iron Works as an opener for Cloud Nothings. The venue was jam packed and teeming with anxious attendees awaiting their opportunity to thrash around to the nihilistic, lo-fi punk of the headlining band. The members of Pleasure Leftists were a quiet presence while setting up and playing, mentioning only that they were from Cleveland and throwing polite thank you’s in between songs. But they had this way of commanding the entire room as soon as they struck a note. The dark, but alluring howl of lead singer Haley Morris worked in perfect harmony with the steadfast rhythm section and somewhat ominous guitar parts. The blend definitely had me (and everyone else) deeply entranced for their entire set. Hang tight Buffalo; we’re slowly but surely rounding this hellish corner of freezing temps and heading toward springtime and sanity. If you’re feeling a little cabin feverish lately, consider expending some energy (or pent-up aggression) with some heavy jams. Catch Cincinnati-born band, Knife the Symphony, at Ocean Garden Oriental Foods tonight. These guys deliver discordant post-hardcore reminiscent of 90’s bands like Unwound and Jawbox, through a rhythmically driven punk filter. It’s dense and intense in all the right ways. Opening the show are locals Softlines, Alien Three, and Blobs. Doors are at 7pm, music starts at 8pm, admission is $5. You can check out the Facebook event here.

Tonight: Teenager

“Going back to school, or already went to school” blues got you down? Why not blow off some last minute steam tonight at Hoyt House? The young bucks who run the joint have a very relaxed attitude on life, where punk time is still alive and well. Tonight on the line up with be Toronto’s Teenager. Teenager is a garage blues punk outfit who could even foil Lester Bangs into thinking that they are the love child of The Sonics, Iggy Pop, and the Washouts, because in the music world it takes three to make a baby. Also on the bill tonight are Buffalo weirdos Alpha Hopper and fairly new lo-fi guys on the block Softlines. Show time says 7pm, but who knows. If you don’t know where Hoyt House is, you already know the drill: ask a punk.

Tonight: Cheap Girls

Mohawk Place is a venue with more than a lot of history for Buffalonians and since it reopen last month, many bands will add to the esteemed venue’s history. That said, few bands better reflect both where the venue has been and where it is going than the showcase of bands gracing it’s stage tonight. That starts with Cheap Girls, a trio hailing from Lansing, Michigan with a sound that reflects everyone from The Replacements to Gin Blossoms to the Gaslight Anthem. They’ll be hitting our fair city in support of their latest album, Famous Graves.  The band has been quietly been making a name for themselves among retro-rock enthusiasts for awhile and with their realist blue-collar lyrics, catchy pop hooks, and classic guitar riffs, should put on quite the show. You know your band has to be good when a band as great as Krill writes their best album about how terrible they feel about how good you are. That’s Pile, talented enough to make Jonah Furman feel bad and bastard enough to come to Buffalo while I’m out of town. So please, enjoy this for me. Check out Dripping to get a taste of where Pile has been. It’s the most fun you’ll have while fighting off the creeping suspicion that your heart has been replaced with dust and spiderwebs. Then, check out “Special Snowflakes” to get a taste of where Pile is going. It’s more expansive, more ambitious and still gets stuck in your head. Hot Tip, Del Paxton and Softlines are all playing. Tonight: Potty Mouth

This may be a bit last minute, but hey, it’s a punk show. Sugar City is hosting an eclectic mix of punk acts from all over the East Coast tonight, starting at 6pm. Potty Mouth, an all-female punk quartet from Northhampton, MA will be headlining tonight’s gig with touring support coming from DIY queercore charmers Aye Nako, of Brooklyn. Throw weirdo-punks Secret Tombs (Pittsburgh) into the mix, and it’s a party. Buffalo’s Softlines and Newish Star will be bringing the local support, making tonight’s Sugar City punk-stravaganza a total no-brainer. Bring a good attitude. Sugar City, 6pm, $7, Alcohol free.
