Tonight: Diarrhea Planet

If we move past the obvious party metal comparison and the unpleasant imagery of the name (sorry if you’re not already picturing an entire planet of diarrhea), Diarrhea Planet is a hardworking band with a more-than-devoted fan base that has successfully transitioned themselves from a “buzz band” to a mainstay in the rock scene. The sextet from Nashville, TN consistently owns and stays true to their image and sound, one that is eccentric, a little droll, but never hackneyed. They are a well-oiled arena punk machine with classic riffage and the energy of a loaded bottle rocket. Think Andrew W.K. meets The Afghan Whigs meets Heavy Cream. Buffalo’s own psychedelic blues rockers Sleepy Hahas will also be gracing the stage, along with punk rock outfit Left & Right from Charlottesville, VA. Last time Diarrhea Planet was in town, the guys played Mohawk on a Monday, and it looks like they’re[...]

Tonight: Harmonica Lewinski

Harmonica Lewinski first played Buffalo almost a year to the date at our fourth birthday party last March. A last minute dusting of snow made driving pretty difficult that night, and the Rochester based band nearly didnt make it off the I-90. Luckily, the garage/surf/punk outfit showed up just in time to play maybe the best set we have featured in the blog’s near five year existence. If you weren’t lucky enough to catch the group at our bday last year, you get another chance this evening. Later tonight at the Hoyt House, the group will return to Buffalo in support of its newest tape, Naked Brunch. Opening for Harmonica Lewinski is the ever evolving psych garage act, Sleepy Hahas, and Dead Wolf, the latter have absolutely no info listed on them, so your guess is as good as mine. The event page lists the start time at 8pm, and[...]

Lesionread Releases NSFW Nail Polish Commercial

Local troublemaker and art polymath Lesionread released a hilariously NSFW nail polish commercial teasing his album release party next month at Dreamland (rescheduled due to arctic weather) with the recently added Brimstone Blondes, Planet Three, and Joe Bap. This clip is assuredly uncool for viewing at your desk, in church, or at the day care center, but if you get off on flaunting societal convention or can lock the stall door, go for it. As far as the much anticipated show at Dreamland, word on the street has it that not only is there a secret installation is in the works, the long running “feud” between Lesionread and Sleepy Hahas’ Pat Butler will finally be settled by a rap battle. The show starts at 8pm and cover is $5. Meanwhile…. Lesionread Merchandise 2015 (NSFW) from Shawn Lewis on Vimeo.

Guest Post: Pat Butler

For our Best of 2014 coverage, we once again decided to reach out to some friends of the blog to get an idea of what made the year in music so great for them. For the next installment in the guest series, Pat Butler, singer/guitarist for the Sleepy Hahas, submitted his year end list. The Sleepy Hahas will ring in the new year next Wednesday night, beginning at 10pm, at the Gypsy Parlor. Favorite Albums: 10. Death Grips – Niggas on the Moon I’m not going to lie. I wept deeply when I heard they were breaking up this past July. I hate to see a truly groundbreaking band die prematurely, but at least we’ll never have to listen to a crappy Death Grips album. Niggas on the Moon popped up out of nowhere for free, and boasted a slightly tamer side of the band, while maintaining all the psychotic ferocity that[...]

Tonight: Terror Pigeon

Tonight, Buffalo’s newest arts space, Dreamland, is going to be pulsating with weirdness and wildness when local art electronica giant Lesionread and ambient rockers Humble Braggers collide with Nashville’s Terror Pigeon and Halifax Nova Scotia’s Rich Aucion. The pushing of limits will be the order of the night, with all acts on the bill being noted for their sonic adventurousness, and with Dreamland being a space with no rules. It could truly be a night to remember, especially with regards to an unfettered Lesionread (aka Sean Louis), currently in a social media “beef” with Sleepy Hahas’ Pat Butler, who will be in the Dreamland audience. Will he be more than an audience member? Will this critique of the War On Drugs vs Mark Kozalek feud boil over? We’ll find out tonight. There’s a $5 cover and the show starts at 8pm. And here’s a salvo from Lesionread at Sleepy Hahas.[...]

Tonight: Zak Ward EP Release Show

Join Niagara Falls native, and former Son of the Sun front man, Zak Ward at Nietzsche’s tonight for the much-anticipated release party of his latest EP, That’s What You Get (think Woods, M Ward, early Wilco). Ward, who calls the record “his best work to date,” will be accompanied by a live band, featuring guitarist Sonny Baker and SOTS drummer Brandon Delmont. Tonight’s show, also features two openers, including an acoustic set by Buffalo’s own Sleepy Hahas. Rounding off the bill is folk/rock Chicago duo Joyeux. Doors for the show are at 9pm, with Sleepy Hahas slated to perform at 9:30pm. Ward and crew take the stage around 11pm. Don’t be late for what the Buffalo News is hailing as one of the four best club shows of the weekend.

Sleepy Hahas Release Music Video For “Nooses”

Buffalo psych-garage four piece, Sleepy Hahas, have released the latest music video from the quarter’s debut LP, Dull Days.  The clip for “Nooses,” the strongest track from the Dull Days, finds the white clad group being hunted down throughout various locations in Bidwell and Delaware Park by some sort of Grim Reaper. Directed by Quiet Country Audio’s Andy Deluca, the video can be viewed in full below. Also, if you get to tonight’s Man Man show at the Tralf Music Hall  on the early side, you may catch a live version of the track as the Hahas are set to open.

Quiet Country Audio

If you follow buffaBLOG at all, you should be familiar with Quiet Country Audio. Although it functions as a full-blown recording studio, the men at QCA specialize in high-quality live video sessions of local and national bands. As one of our curators for Herd Fest, they have picked several local artists (and one out-of-towner) with QCA sessions under their belts. Their showcase will be held on June 20th at DBGB’s beginning at 10pm and mostly features bands from the emo and pop punk spectrum. Ghost House is QCA’s pick from NJ and fits in nicely with the other emo/punk heavyweights from Buffalo. Cedar Kites is next up, reminiscent of Brand New and Balance and Composure. Rust Belt Lights is the punkiest of the bunch, riding fast tempos and crunchy guitars. The Traditional are just coming off finishing their new album, and will probably have plenty of new, heavily-emotional material to show off. Wrapping[...]

Sleepy Hahas – Dull Days

Dull Days, the new LP from Buffalo’s own Sleepy Hahas, is likely to be one of the most diverse, consistently entertaining albums you’ll hear out of WNY this year. The sound is all over the map, as the band explores different styles and genres on each track, from Mudhoney-esque sludge metal to more gentle, acoustic numbers. It never stops being interesting, and the end result is an endlessly fascinating debut from a wildly creative band. If Sleepy Hahas sound had to be pinned down, they are somewhere in the middle of psych rock and sludge metal, with elements of Mudhoney, Queens Of the Stone Age, and 13th Floor Elevators all emerging at various points in the album. This is especially apparent on “I Hate My Body (And It Hates Me Too),” an engaging psychedelic rant that certainly wouldn’t feel out of place on Rated R. But these are not the only[...]

Tonight: Sleepy Hahas Album Release Show

After some minor lineup tweaking, the Buffalo psych garage four-piece, Sleepy Hahas, is set to celebrate the release of its debut LP, the heavy and driving Dull Days, tonight at Buffalo Iron Works. The coming together of the album has been a bit of a communal effort, with the Victory Gardens handling some impressive album art work and Lesionread jumping behind the camera for a couple videos (see the lyric video below) to a couple of Dull Days‘ tracks. As for our thoughts on the album, check back with us next week for a proper write up. Joining the fun tonight will be Fredonia fuzz rock threesome Zealot, the darker pop sounds of Strange Acres, and crunchy college rocking Bearhunter. Tonight’s show kicks off at 8pm with a $5 cover.

Sleepy Hahas Debut Lesionread Directed Music Video

Just yesterday, Buffalo garage rock foursome, Sleepy Hahas, debuted the music video for their heavy new single “I Hate My Body (and It Hates Me Too),” taken from the band’s forthcoming LP, Dull Days. The trippy clip, directed by Shawn Lewis aka Lesionread, would be a perfect way to spend a few mins during an upcoming shroom trip. The band will be celebrating the release of Dull Days on Friday, May 16th at Buffalo Iron Works. Full show details can be found here. Watch the video for “I Hate My Body (and It Hates Me Too)” below.
