Tonight: Justin Roeland & the Nightswimmers

Buffalo’s newest and coolest venue, Duende at Silo City, sets the mood tonight with a evening of chilled out, ambient tunes. Taking the proverbial stage are Justin Roeland and the Nightswimmers. Roeland (The Fling) is an Ithaca-based singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who leads this band of indie folk rockers with lethargic, ethereal vocals and catchy, atmospheric melodies. Expect tracks from their latest album, Doomed to Bloom, as well as oldies. Be sure to gather ’round like a campfire under a starry night for what will be an outstandingly scenic set. Performing and flying solo is Emily Finlan, singer, songwriter and guitarist of the Buffalo bedroom folk quartet, heave. Tonight: SMUG Release Party

There’s a punk rock party tonight at Nietzsche’s in Buffalo as local favorites, SMUG, celebrate the release of their hotly anticipated debut album, Gorgeous. Formed in 2017, SMUG is a trio that’s been heating up the scene all year with addictively apathetic and high voltage punk tracks. Their combination of snobby vocals, kinetic riffs and hopscotch drumbeats is backed up with an infectious “fuck you” attitude that’s earned the trio a reputation as Buffalo’s baddest influences. Tonight: The Joy Formidable

Tonight The Joy Formidable takes the stage at Buffalo’s Rec Room to rock your faces clean off as they wrap up their North American tour. This North Wales trio means business with their wonderfully deafening and melodic indie rock records. Badass lead singer and guitarist Ritzy Bryan leads the charge with beautiful, ethereal vocals and emotionally charged and dictated riffs. Supporting Bryan and adding their own textures to the captivating soundscape are buzzing bassist Rhydian Dafydd and calamitous drummer Justin Stahley. Tonight prolific singer-songwriter-guitar wizard, Ty Segall, unplugs for a special set as part of his solo acoustic tour at Buffalo Iron Works. Legendary greaser punk rockers, Social Distortion, roll through Buffalo’s Main Street tonight to rock Town Ballroom as part of their cross-country tour. Having stood the test of time since their inception in 1978, Social D is the Cadillac of the original SoCal punk movement. The seemingly invincible singer and guitarist, Mike Ness, has led the group through a storied three decade run and pioneered an invigorating throwback punk rock ‘n’ roll sound with rockabilly style. Tonight: Yo La Tengo

Cancel your plans and hold onto your butts because living indie rock legends Yo La Tengo will be gracing Asbury Hall in Buffalo tonight. Debuting in 1986, Yo La Tengo are heavyweight cult heroes whose music is so beautifully emotive and engrossing-ly atmospheric it will bring a tear to your eye. Their eclectic records range anywhere from Lynchian instrumentals to lazy river folk and make up 15 studio albums and countless additional material. This year, the resilient Hoboken, NJ trio released their latest lucid full-length, There’s a Riot Going On, adding to their impressive repertoire of celestial bedroom grooves. The 9th Ward at Babeville in Buffalo is going to be rocking tonight as it hosts the legendary livewire power pop trio, Shonen Knife. These candy-coated cult heroines from Osaka, Japan have an amazingly storied and accomplished history over their rocking 40-year career. Shonen Knife first found US underground success during the 90’s with sugary sweet pop rock melodies that delight the ears and make heads rush. During this decade, they toured the country with Lollapalooza, appeared on Beavis & Butthead and counted Sonic Youth and Nirvana among their fanbase, even opening for the latter in one of their early gigs. Tonight: The Curls

Squeeze the last drop out of your weekend with a show hosted at Electric Avenue in Buffalo tonight. Topping the bill and fresh off last month’s Pitchfork Festival are Windy City art-rockers, The Curls. This amorphous musical ensemble experiments with psychedelic bubblegum melodies and some of the quirkiest sounds you’ll ever hear. The day is finally here. It’s a punk Christmas in Buffalo tonight as the Accidental Fest goes down at The Mickiewicz Polish Library, the same spot where Torn Space Theatre puts on their performances. The venue is the perfect spot to house the absolute chaos that erupts when 10 different bands, 6 out of town touring bands and 4 local acts, all gather together under one roof. Coming from St. Louis are weirdo pop stars BB Eye; Janitor Scum from Calgary, Alberta; Big Ups and Meneka from NYC; Pandemix from Boston, and Spell Runner out of Albany. Local powerhouses Radiation Risks will be representing Buffalo alongside Tines,  and Becca Ryskalczyk. This won’t be a show you will want to miss. Doors are at 5:30pm and it’s $10 at the door.

Mohawk Place hosts a hotly anticipated hodgepodge show of wonderfully unique music that promises to be the biggest party in Buffalo tonight. Headlining and making a stop on their summer march up the Northeast is the awe-inspiring, What Cheer? Brigade. More rock n roll than marching band, this twentyish piece badass brass collective from Providence, RI is going to change your life; you just don’t know it yet.
