AJJ at the Studio at Waiting Room (11/05/16)

Earlier this month,  Andrew Jackson Jihad played their first show in Buffalo since their name change, and it was packed.  On tour in support of their new album, The Bible 2, the folk punk veterans played a career spanning set to a full house at the Studio at Waiting Room.   They split the set between a full band set and a stripped down two piece set, performing cuts from their new album, among many others.  AJJ brought along Chris Farren and Diners as openers, and they both killed it as well.  Check out some photos from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery. Touche Amore at the Waiting Room (10/17/16)

Have you ever went to a show and been so blown away by an opener that the rest of the show just feels like a blur?  The band that kicked this show off, Culture Abuse, did just that.  One of the most rocking bands I have seen in a VERY long time.  They’re super hard to describe, but damn, you just gotta give them a listen.  Fear not though, Tiny Moving Parts and Touche Amore both still totally killed it.  For Touche Amore’s first show back in Buffalo in two or three years, what seems like every die hard TA fan in Buffalo took to the front of the stage for a set full of scream-alongs and crowd surfing.  Check out some shots from the night below, and click HERE for a full gallery. The Wonder Years at Anthology in Rochester (10/16/16)

This past Sunday, Anthology was packed to the brim for a sold out show featuring some of the biggest active pop punk bands.  Headlined by The Wonder Years, the stacked lineup also featured Seaway, Moose Blood, Knuckle Puck, and Real Friends.  The show was absolutely wild from start to finish, with audience participation through the roof.  Check out some photos from the insane night below, and click HERE for a full gallery. Basement at the Studio at Waiting Room (9/09/16)

This past Friday, UK pop punk act Basement made their way back to Buffalo for an incredible show the Connecticut 4 piece Ovlov, and Brooklyn indie act Eskimeaux. This was Basement’s first time back in Buffalo since they played the old Sugar City, on their first ever US tour.  Buffalo showed them a great time, and every band that played was stellar.  Check out some shots from the night below, and click here for a full gallery. Motion City Soundtrack at the Town Ballroom (08/01/16)

Monday night, Motion City Soundtrack bid farewell to Buffalo on their final tour.   The band’s final tour spans the United States, and we were lucky enough to get a stop at the Town Ballroom to send them off right.  They played a career spanning set list containing all the hits and even a request or two.  What made this show extra special was the opening acts MCS brought along on the tour, Rozwell Kid and A Great Big Pile of Leaves, who both played totally incredible sets.  While it sucks to see them go, the show served as a perfect Buffalo sendoff.   Check out our photos from the night below, and click HERE for a full gallery. Edgefest 2016 (07/31/16)

Local radio station 103.3 the Edge came back this year with another stacked lineup for their annual one day festival, Edgefest.  This year, the fest took place in Canalside opposed to the outer harbor, which I’m sure was a welcome change to many. With rain in the forecast, the crowd still showed  up in huge numbers, and lucky for them, there wasn’t a drop of rain in sight all day.  With blistering sets from Detones, Joywave, Tokyo Police Club, and more, this is sure to stand up as one of Edgefest’s best showings to date.   Check out some photos from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery The Joy Formidable Tokyo Police Club Joywave Sam Roberts Band City and Colour Deftones

Pitchfork Music Festival: Sunday

While I’m sad to see it go, Pitchfork Music Festival was without a doubt one of my favorite music festival experiences of all time.  There wasn’t a band all weekend that I was disappointed by, and I was blown away by multiple bands I hadn’t heard before. With a forecast filled with rain and thunderstorms almost all weekend, somehow the rain held off, making it near perfect. Basically, for the next year, you’ll find me in my room listening to Broken Social Scene counting down the days until next year’s festival. Saturday featured performances by Porhces, Kamsi Washington, FKA Twigs, and many more.  Check out some of the photos below, and if you want to see more than just 4 or 5 shots of each band, click HERE for a full gallery. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds @ Artpark (7/6/16)

Last Wednesday Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds made a stop in at Lewiston’s famed summertime mecca, Artpark. Gallagher, formerly of Oasis, brought his giant Brit-rock sounds to a crowd of thousands. We sent contributing buffaBLOG photographer Ashley Schaffert to snap some magic. Charles Bradley @ Canalside (6/9/16)

The 2016 Canalside season kicked off in extraordinary style on Thursday, June 9th. One of the more interesting shows at the venue over the past couple years went down as Charles Bradley & the Extraordinaires provided a soulful experience for the enthusiastic crowd. Bradley’s set started with a sharply dressed backing band laying down a midtempo soul-funk foundation while the frontman was introduced by the bandleader and sashayed on stage. The set was littered with autobiographical tales hitting on heavy subjects: the songs played on Thursday hit on heartache, social injustice, and his lengthy, humanizing struggle to make for himself the blessed life he now leads. Bradley knows how to work an audience into a frenzy using all of the natural tools at his disposal: his serpentine arms and legs, his always-in-motion ass, and, oh yeah, a voice that could stop a bulldozer in its tracks. Let’s hope this is[...]

Frank Turner at Canalside (6/16/16)

Last night, Buffalo showed up for folk / alt rock act Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls. Frank Turner’s ability to work the crowd shined through,  as by the end of the night, everyone near the stage at Canalside seemed to be having the time of their lives.   While a ton of people showed up, not TOO many people showed up (looking at you Matt & Kim), making the show a pleasant experience for all. With an opening set from alternative rock act July Talk, this was another stellar free Canalside show for the books.  Check out shots from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery. The Soft Love EP Release Show at Mr. Goodbar (6/4/16)

This was the first Buffalo local show I’ve attended in quite some time considering I’ve been on the road so much. I’m glad I went to this because I’m truly stoked in the direction the music scene is heading in right now. I felt like I was in Brooklyn. Check out the photos below to see what I mean. Tiny Moving Parts at Waiting Room (05/31/16)

This past Wednesday night, the emos came out in droves to see Tiny Moving Parts at Waiting Room. The band has played Buffalo more than a few times over the past couple of years, and have built a strong local following. With relatable lyrics and a boisterous live show, the crowd was on its feet and singing along the whole show, partly due to some stellar opening sets from Buffalo’s own Alleys, as well as touring acts Free Throw and Prawn.  Check out some photos from the show below, and click HERE for a full gallery. Protomartyr at Mohawk Place (5/10/16)

After my introduction to Protomartyr last year at Pitchfork Festival, I was immediately hooked.  The dark, churning, yet insanely catchy style of post punk that the band boasted caught my ears, and after buying their commercial debut, Under the Color of Light, I had it on repeat for months.  The band also release a new record last year, titled The Agent Intellect, which was not only just as phenomenal, but the way the songs translated live was nothing short of fantastic.  While the band kept it quite serious on stage with minimal crowd interaction,  they were able to create a live sound that was damn near perfect. Check out some photos from the show below, featuring Buffalo act Facility Men, Philly post punks Psychic Teens, and Protomartyr.  Click HERE for for a full gallery.
