Must See Shows (11/6/24-11/12/24)

Thursday, November 7th @ 7pm Cursive w/ Gladie @ Rec Room Legendary Omaha indie rock act Cursive returns this Thursday for a trip down memory lane, much to the delight western New York’s aging scenesters.  Cursive broke through to many fans with 2003’s critically acclaimed album The Ugly Organ. The album has influenced thousands of projects and has been a mainstay in hundreds of thousands of fans playlists. Lead by Tim Kasher, the songs are brooding and angsty yet in a mature way that is self-reflective and poetic. Undoubtedly Cursive will sprinkle in tracks from The Ugly Organ, Domestica, and Burst and Bloom. If you’ve sat out on Cursive’s newest material, please catch yourself up because it’s on par with the past catalog which is both exciting and promising. Opening the bill will be Philadelphia indie act Gladie. $25 at the door + fees. Exeunt.  Devourer by Cursive Friday, November[...]

Top 20 Rochester Tracks: 10-1

It’s that time of the year again where we rack our brain, scan our playlists, and check all of our posts for all of the songs that we’ve covered from the 585 from the past year. It seems like just yesterday we were jamming out to Kitty Snowpants and discussing when JOYWAVE was going to break (spoiler: they did). This is our fourth year of tracking our favorite songs of the year out of Rochester. Now, I am sure there are amazing songs that we’ve brushed over or haven’t even heard coming out of the city. This list is subjective obviously, this is a blog. Regardless, I think Rochester’s scene this year has been the strongest it has been ever, pumping out consistent jams which is giving Buffalo a run for its money. On Tuesday, we posted our first half (20-11) of our favorite tunes. Here are our top ten songs[...]

Tonight: Rochester Invasion Pt. 2

In what is shaping up to be one of the hottest weekends of local music since Herdfest, there exists a bill so Rochesterian, it just might work. Well—actually—it has worked already once before. Tonight, Nietzsche’s will host part two of our Rochester Invasion series, featuring more of the finest talent our neighboring city has to offer. Joining us tonight we have 60’s-tinged party-all-the-timers Harmonica Lewinski, tongue-in-cheek lounge crooners Passive Aggressives Anonymous, multiinstrumental virtuoso Sam Snyder (or OHS, his endearingly shortened project name), and stone-cold rock and rollers The Ginger Faye Bakers. Each of these four acts bring their very own compelling flavor to the table, so don’t miss out. Swing by after Porchfest, the party doesn’t start until 9pm. This lineup is stacked, so bring five bucks so we can get our Rochester friends home safe and sound after closing time.

OHS Releases Video for Alternate Take of “Coma”

Maybird and Thunder Body’s Overhand Sam Snyder, or OHS, just released the music video to his song “Coma,” a track from his Album of the Week selected EP Long Legs. The video is actually soundtracked by the tape version of the slow burner, which is a touch more organic and stripped down than its celestial Grizzly Bear-esque counter part featured on Long Legs, and finds Snyder sounding rather Sam Beamish. The clip doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, and I suppose it really shouldn’t as its a collection of sometimes eye catching found footage with some minor connections (rocket launches and crashes, flower blooms and decays) taken from Archive.org. Snyder is set to finish his month long residency at Rochester’s Flour City Station this evening. For those in the area, stop by at 8:30pm. Watch the video for “Coma” below. OHS – Long Legs

It stands to say that Sam Snyder is about as DIY as they come. The Rochester-based musician, commonly referred to as “Overhand Sam” on the local band circuit, is the emblematic jack-of-all-trades—writing, playing, recording, and engineering his own sonic outpourings. But his musicianship is not the only facet that defines him—Snyder also runs a local record label / production team hybrid called Turtle Phonic that records artists in his attic studio and subsequently promotes the shit out them. (Have a look at #turtlephonic on Instagram.) Snyder’s latest release under his OHS moniker—a “mini LP” titled Long Legs— is a stylistic potpourri, drawing influence from a grand multitude of artists and ultimately cohering into his most stimulating material to date. It’s tough to lay down an all-encompassing classification on such an eclectic bunch of tracks, though most of the songs share elements of psychedelia at its most basic of definitions. Sam[...]

Tonight: Overhand Sam

Tonight Allentown will be treated to a pretty eclectic mix at Dreamland (387 Franklin St. Set to perform is Rochester-based OHS (Overhand Sam), aka Sam Snyder who might look familiar from his other gig in Maybird. OHS’sound is full-bodied, sounding like a mix between a Jack White project and college radio hit. Also on the bill is fairly new to our radar, Different Planets, which sounds like if Casiotone for the Painfully Alone took hallucinogens accidentally after his wife left him and subbed in  an industrial band.  Certainly not to be left out is Iowa’s best atmospheric rock troubadour, Bob Bucko Jr. and sludgy weirdo outfit, Pappy Stardust and & the Eclectic Moon Sandwich. Doors are at 7pm with kickoff at 8pm. $5 donation goes to Bob Bucko Jr., because he traveled 13 hours to get to Buffalo. Trust me, that drive sucks. I’ve done it way too many times.
