Nxghtshade – “Death By Desire”

It’s not often we get an emo house tune in our inboxes, but LA-based producer Nxghtshade has done it with their latest single, “Death By Desire.” Carried by itchy guitar stabs; a super danceable synth backbone; and a vaguely love-inspired lyrical package, this one had us in our feels and bobbing our heads simultaneously. As Nxghtshade says, “Even sad kids wanna dance sometimes.” Super clean production and nu-disco sentiment doesn’t hurt – this one’s one you should hear for yourself. Preview “Death By Desire” via YouTube below – it’s also on Spotify and Apple Music.

Together Pangea – “Nervous”

buffaBLOG loves Together Pangea – we saw them play Buffalo in 2018 and recently raved over their song, “Nothing To Hide.” They’re back with another jaunty indie rocker called “Nervous” – the LA rockers have a fantastic ability to inject their songs with the same nervous energy that inspired the song. Expect jangly guitars and sneering vocals, perfect for fans of PUP, The Weakerthans, or Superchunk. Check out Nervous via the YouTube lyric video below – you can also find it on Spotify.

Caleb Peters – “Carousel (Remix by Devault)”

Caleb Peters and Devault teamed up for this spicy collab of Peters’ original song, “Carousel.” What started as a fun indie pop song by Peters has been turned into a jammy, deep house vibe by Devault. Peters is somewhat of a wunderkind – as just a teenager himself, it’s hard to imagine that this tune might be bumped in clubs he can’t even get into… But it bumps nonetheless. It was even used in an Urban Outfitters ad – nice. If you want to listen to “Carousel,” preview it using the YouTube widget below, or visit their Spotify for streaming purposes.

Thunder Jackson – “Colors (The Knocks Remix)”

Thunder Jackson really knows how to write a dancefloor banger – “Colors” is the latest, and wow, does it make us want to move. This particular version, an electric remix by The Knocks, straddles that fine line between indietronica and nu-disco – with galloping basslines and a captivating performance from Thunder himself (love that falsetto), this is a thunderous return to form for… Thunder. Puns certainly intended. Check out the retro-filled splendor of the music video for “Colors” below – if you’re enjoying it, be sure to check it out on Spotify too.

Connor McCoy – “Geode”

Connor McCoy hit us up with this stunning new single he’s affectionately titled “Geode.” With unique percussion choices; simple acoustic guitar riffing; and Connor’s uniquely ghostly voice, “Geode” stands out with a creative sound that’s both gentle and engaging. It’s set off by a powerful music video set in the Mojave Desert Lava Tube – topical AND beautiful. Fans of Sufjan Stevens, Radical Face, and Bon Iver are going to absolutely adore this one. Watch the music video for “Geode” below – you can find it on Spotify too for all your streaming purposes.

Mazey Haze – “Headspin”

Loving this sparkly tune from Amsterdam-based Mazey Haze. “Headspin” lives up to it’s name – with a frantic-paced drumbeat; shiny synth plunking; and twirling, twinkling guitar melodies; “Headspin” embodies it’s title while also being the perfect vehicle for Mazey’s dreamy and endearing vocals. With touching lyrics about doubts and fears about spreading one’s wings, this one is a perfect fit for fans of Alvvays, Hazel English, or Jay Som. “Headspin” is available for purchase via Bandcamp below – you can also find it on Spotify, if that’s more your thing. red martian – “use”

Red Martian is a unique trio who has been kicking around since 1999 – they’ve caught our ears with the nu-shoegaze stylings of their latest single, “use.” It’s a noisy, guitar-driven tune with a bouncing bass line, frantic drums, and far-off vocals. Fans of My Bloody Valentine (but played by your favorite band at a packed basement show) are gonna love this one – it’s charmingly lo-fi in the absolute best way. Preview “use” via Soundcloud below – it’s also available on Spotify, if that’s more your speed. red martian · use

FLOWVERS – “Far Away”

It hasn’t been too long since we’ve checked in with Portsmouth-based indie rockers FLOWVERS – we just featured their previous single “When It Comes To It” earlier this month. They’re back with another amazing alt-rocker, this time in the form of “Far Away.” Propelled by the juxtaposition between a gentle harmonic riff and obscenely huge guitar tones, “Far Away” seems destined for greatness – it was recorded with Richard Woodcraft of Arctic Monkeys/Radiohead fame after all. Fans of 90s alternative are gonna love this – but this could also sit comfortably on the shelf next to any of today’s modern rock radio all-stars. This one really spoke to us – preview Far Away via Soundcloud below, then head over to Spotify to add it to your favorite playlist. FLOWVERS · Far Away

SPACED – “Spinning”

SPACED is a Buffalo-based hardcore band with a brand new EP that you should be checking out now – they’re a veritable supergroup, featuring members of Talking in My Sleep, Funeral Coat, Post Prom, Calloused, and more. They’ve self-described their new EP as “far-out hardcore” with an “accessible sound, unique groove, and different perspective;” we can’t help but agree. You can feel the magic in debut single “SPINNING” – expect rip-roaring guitar solos, phasers, and a powerhouse performance from singer/screamer Lexi Reyngoudt. You can preview “SPINNING” via YouTube below, or, you can check it out via Spotify.

Lauren Dejey – “Just Because You Said You Said You’re Sorry Doesn’t Mean You Are”

Here’s a sultry, alt-pop banger all the way from South London, courtesy of 23-year-old singer/songwriter Lauren Dejey. It’s a song about avoiding negative energy in your life; conversely, it’s also full of expletives and Lauren’s dark and moody vocals. It certainly sends a powerful message, one that fans of Billie Eilish and Grimes are gonna love. Expect minimalist instrumentation, a brooding tempo, and lots of sweet harmonies. Preview “Just Because” using the Soundcloud widget below – if you dig it, be sure to add it to your favorite Spotify playlist. Lauren Dejey · Just Because You Said You’re Sorry Doesn’t Mean You Are

Acid Dad – “She Only Eats Organic”

Digging this urgent psych-y rocker from NYC based trio Acid Dad, who has been kicking around the city since 2016. Lyrically, “She Only Eats Organic” is a “tongue-in-cheek look at the trendy vegan/vegetarian lifestyle combined with the day-to-day nonsense you might come across in NYC.” Musically, the band uses a noodly, psyched-out guitar riff to evoke the urgency and anxiety of the city. It’s a gritty, grungy good-time and an apt juxtaposition – one that seems perfect for Bushwick basements (and our hearts). We think you’re gonna like “She Only Eats Organic” too. Check it out on YouTube first – you can also find it on Spotify.

sleepyhead – “Centrefold”

Manchester-based duo sleepyhead (aka Seb Reid and Matt Davies) create urgent indie pop with amazing energy – case-in-point, their latest offering, “Centrefold.” Bringing to mind CASTLEBEAT or Say Hi with a hint of The Smiths, “Centrefold” pairs a frantic drumbeat with equally neurotic guitar strumming and ties it all together with an almost post-punk approach to vocals. We’re definitely digging it. Keep your eyes peeled for their upcoming LP, Blue. Until then, preview “Centrefold” via YouTube or stream it on Spotify.

Luxury Mane – “Dumb Luck”

St. Petersburg band Luxury Mane hit us up with this fantastic tune done on a Tascam 388… Maybe it’s the reel-to-reel recording, or maybe it’s Luxury Mane’s fantastic songwriting… But either way, we think their version of “Dumb Luck” turned out stellar. Expect plenty of swimmy, swirly guitars; frantic, upbeat drums; and an overall 2021-flavored approach that is as refreshing as it is sincere. You can find “Dumb Luck” on Bandcamp (below) or Spotify. Best of Lux by Luxury Mane

RIVER – “Inappropriate”

RIVER is a German-based, California-born, road tripping duo whose debut single, “Inappropriate,” caught our ears with it’s unique brand of dark indie-pop. About the song, the duo says: “This song is like traveling back in time to when we were still kids living each day to the fullest, not a care in the world. Not taking life and ourselves too seriously can be a lot harder than expected but with just the right bit of distance it’s a lot less drama than you think.” Beyond the nostalgic approach and lyrics about high school and ice cream (take us back!), we appreciated the bouncy basslines and unique synth textures throughout “Inappropriate.” If you like it too, you can check it out via Spotify.

Basement Revolver – “Skin”

Hamilton-based quartet Basement Revolver are no strangers to buffaBLOG – we’ve already shown our love for three (!) of their previous singles, “Baby;” “Tree Trunks;” and “Wax and Digital.” They’re back again with their unique brand of slow-burn shoegaze, this time with a song called “Skin.” With their trademark reverb-soaked sound, BR dive into themes of body image and mental health with a chorus refrain that’s stunning in it’s simplicity. The brooding refrain of “I want to feel at home in my skin, in my skin” has been haunting us for weeks. Check out the equally powerful music video for “Skin” below – you can also find them on Spotify.
