Wombo – “7 of Cups”

Last time we checked in with the dark energy of Louisville trio Wombo, we were praising their single, “One of These.” They’re back with another dirge, full of intentionally sour-sounding notes (e.g. Pile) and haunting vocals, this time called “7 of Cups.” It’s impossible not to bop along to the trudging bass anchor – it’s similarly difficult not to sway along to the spindly guitar work that hangs like a thick fog over the rest of the track. About the song, Wombo says: “The song is about losing time, forgetting/ being forgotten by time, and feeling trapped by time. The hourglass I found at an antique mall and it gave me the idea to have myself trapped inside a room as a clay version of myself by it.” Check out the music video on YouTube below – you can also find “7” on Spotify.

Blue Cove – “Soothe”

We’re loving the energy coming out of Blue Cove, especially on latest single, “Soothe.” The Chicago-based duo offer a modern take on 2000s emo/pop-punk – with plenty of spring-loaded guitar riffs and catchy, impassioned vocals, this would fit comfortably on any playlist anchored by Soccer Mommy, Charly Bliss, and The Beths. About “Soothe,” Blue Cove say: “A toxic lover can drain you. Crooner – “Better Ways”

Crooner from our kinda-neighbor city Erie, PA, caught our ears with their latest offering, “Better Ways.” Self-described as “nostalgia-pop,” the trio brings acoustic-driven indie folk flavors with omnipleasant bass and drum accompaniments. On top of it all is a quasi-falsetto vocal line that evokes feelings of longing, but we were particularly drawn to the bridge that combines the otherwise organic instrumentation with subtle electronic flourishes. LonelyTwin – “More Than On My Mind”

Stockholm’s LonelyTwin (aka Madelene Eliasson) just released her debut album, This End Had No Beginning, via Ultra Records. The song “More Than On My Mind” is on the album, and it’s our latest recommendation for good reason. Expect light and airy indie pop vibes with themes of heartbreak, love, and strained relationships. About the song, Eliasson says: “It’s about being stuck in a loop of thinking that things might be better next time, even though you might know deep down that it’s never gonna happen.” You can also find “More Than On My Mind” on Apple Music and Spotify. The Demos – “Streetlight Glow”

Our Rochester neighbors in The Demos just released a new single, “Streetlight Glow,” that shows off their penchant for writing hooky indie-garage riffs. With its synth-laced choruses; smart pop sheen; and angular indie rock guitar stabs, “Glow” reminds us of The Strokes; Cold War Kids; or even their fellow Rochesterians in Joywave. About the song, The Demos say: “Youthful love under the glow of a streetlight. FNTN – “Impossible Summer”

We’re checking back in with our buds in FNTN and their surfy new single, “Impossible Summer.” You might remember our feature of “Crypto Vegan” from a few months ago, but it’s time to open your ears again for this irresistible number. The juicy intro guitar riffs were enough to sell us, but this beachy tune has enough melody and good-time vibes to have us head bopping all the way through. Week Neez – “Shiny Leopard”

The “business-punk” band Week Neez (their words, not ours, although v applicable) recently caught our ears with their hooky new single, “Shiny Leopard.” By this point, any dedicated readers of buffaBLOG know we’re suckers for strong pop hooks and big energy… Let’s just say “Leopard” is full of both. The Wollongong, Australia-based act is headed out on tour this summer in support, so while we can’t join them (because we’re stuck in Buffalo), anyone in their area should make any effort. Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts – “Somewhere Else”

Brooklyn act Old Fashioned Bleeding Hearts (aka songwriter/musician Colton Tracy) caught our ears with the 90s-esque slacker rock on his latest single, “Somewhere Else.” Sludgy guitars and siren leads pair well with the aloof vocals to pierce through your speakers in a way that brings to mind genre luminaries like Built to Spill, Pavement, and early-era Weezer. Tom Sundog – “Night on My Mind”

London-based artist Tom Sundog is on a mission to create sounds no one has ever heard before and we think the rapid-fire delivery on his latest offering, “Night on My Mind” checks all those boxes. An electrified beat and squelchy synth sounds give this an otherworldly sound, certainly refreshing on the ears while offering a challenging new sonic palate to explore. poolblood – “twinkie”

Our Toronto neighbors in poolblood just released a cool new song called “twinkie” and we’re hooked. “Twinkie” is jangly and gauzy – enough to appeal to fans of anyone from Phoebe Bridgers, to Girlpool, to Goon. The accompanying music video (directed by guitarist/drummer Shamir) captures the mood of the song perfectly; a nostalgia-inducder, full of frolicking, flowers, and imagery that generally brings to mind happier times. About the song, singer Maryam Said says: “‘twinkie’ is a song I wrote about the tenderness of time, time as a source of love, and the way time is the ultimate parent. Starting over is as sweet as a golden sponge cake.” You can find “twinkie” on Spotify and Apple Music too.

Paolo Nutini – “Acid Eyes”

Paolo Nutini seems to be on fire lately (a recent performance with Liam Gallagher can confirm), and that energy is evident on his slow-burn new single, “Acid Eyes.” “Eyes” is a hopeful but bittersweet love song with a haunting refrain of “I never told you I loved you.” While the song starts out as a simple bass thump, it eventually blossoms into something beautiful, atmospheric, and orchestral – not unlike a perfectly-executed acid trip… Unless we’re mistaken and Paolo’s referring to something a bit more caustic. Knightingale – “Big Wave”

All the way from Singapore, Knightingale are making waves (get it?) with their latest single, “Big Wave.” Huge punk rock energy pours over you right from the get go – an absolutely huge guitar sound swells to tsunami heights while the vocal presence sounds surfy and distant, even though they still crash over you. Ciao Lucifer – “So Good It Hurts”

Netherlands-based duo Ciao Lucifer are at it again with new single “So Good It Hurts.” Propelled by powerful falsetto crooning, spindly guitar leads, and an infectious 3/4 beat, “Hurts” would fit comfortably on a playlist next to your favorite Vampire Weekend or Phoenix songs.
