Must See Shows (9/18/24-9/24/24)

Wednesday, 9/18 @ 7pm STRFKR w/ Happy Sad Face @ Electric City Ever-evolving Portland electro-pop act STRFKR returns to Buffalo mid-week to deliver ear worms from the band’s deep catalog. Since forming in 2007, the outfit has seen massive success on the indie scene with their knack for melodies that live inside your head and never seem to reach an expiration date. STRFKR is touring in support of their seventh album, Parallel Realms, released via the band’s long-term partner Polyvinyl Records. If STRFKR isn’t already a staple on your playlist, then it would be recommended for fans of Passion Pit, Toro y Moi, or the synth-heavy side of of Montreal. Also sharing the stage will be Joshua Tree-based psych-pop act, Happy Sad Face. Tonight: trunkweed

Baltimore based DIY indie pop outfit, trunkweed will be bringing their flavor of brash pop melodies and emotive lyrics to Mohawk Place tonight. This is the second stop on their first tour for 2017 and it’s likely not one to miss. Their newest record, you are a nice surprise has a subtle yet intense quality to it, like a compact, white hot flame that at times lashes out with a scorching intensity. Joining them on stage throughout the night will be Buffalo’s stripped down punk folk group, Velvet Bethany, psych rockers, Bold Folly, psychpop from Moody Cosmos, and some hardcore punk from The Drains. Doors are at 8 pm. and it’s $5 to get in.

Tonight: Quilt

Tonight, New York-based four-piece Quilt bring their dreamy folk pop to Buffalo. The band are fresh off the release of their latest album, Plaza, which earned them much critical acclaim at the start of the year. Their latest album perfectly encapsulates the sound of this psychedelic folk band who at once sound like they could be from any era of pop music and yet like no other band in particular. Newcomers can expect a plethora of glorious layered folk sounds and beautiful harmonies, where long-time fans can expect lots of new material as well as old favorites. Quilt will also be joined by fellow New Yorkers/ Baroque indie rockers, Mutual Benefits. It all goes down tonight at Mohawk Place and should be one well worth checking out. Doors at Mohawk are at 7pm and tickets are $14.

Tonight: Failures’ Union

Tonight, the Mohawk Place will be hosting a once in a lifetime gig.  In celebration of Buffalonian Tim Turcott’s 40th birthday, he will be reviving a few of his bands for a rare night of music.  The show will feature The Exit Strategy, who will be playing their first show in seven years, as well as Gathering Ground, who will be playing their second show in 17 years.  In addition to these two rare performances, Buffalo staple Failures’ Union will be kicking the show off.  Even if you have never heard of these three bands, you have without a doubt seen their influence on the Buffalo music scene in one way or another, with members of not only that band, but all three, playing in various other bands in Buffalo over the years.
