Kerfuffle at Canalside (6/16/18)

Buffalo’s indie leaning radio station, Alternative Buffalo,  has successfully done it again. Last Saturday, the radio station hosted its 5th annual incarnation of their growing music festival, Kerfuffle. After a long day of fist bumping, it was abundantly clear that the crowd loved the programmed bands along with the adorable puppies offered by the SPCA . Nobody does it quite like this radio station when it comes to hosting a giant crowd at one of the most scenic spots on the Buffalo waterfront. Throughout the day, a roaring crowd of 10,000 people enjoyed a bill with nine of the most exciting active alternative bands in the music scene today. These bands include: Mainland, Mansionair, Family of the Year, Robert DeLong, Marian Hill, Manchester Orchestra, Taking Back Sunday, Matt and Kim, and last but not least the headliner, Awolnation. See the gallery below for a visual representation of these performances. Mainland[...]

HRVST Festival at Riverworks (10/14/17)

Last Saturday, local radio station, 103.3 The Edge partnered with After Dark Presents to threw their inaugural HRVST Festival. While the show was original slated to take place at the Cumulus Festival Grounds, it was moved to an outdoor festival stage at Riverworks due to production issues. This may have been for the better, as the covered, open air stage at Riverworks served as a great fit for the autumn themed festival. The lineup was eclectic and great, featuring a whole day full of music, including sets from PVRIS, Joywave, Brian Fallon, Manchester Orchestra, and Phoenix. Check out some photos from the festival below, shot by blog photographer, Brendan O’Connor. PVRIS Joywave Brian Fallon Manchester Orchestra Phoenix

Andy Hull and Robert McDowell – Swiss Army Man Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull and Robert McDowell are broadening their horizons with their latest project. The pair were enlisted by experimental film directors Dan Kwan and Dan Scheinert (known professionally as The Daniels) to record the score for their newest film, Swiss Army Man. Hull and McDowell were given one caveat; every sound must be made solely by the human voice. Though lacking any instrumentation, the soundtrack is unlike any acapella you’ve ever heard. After initially reading the script, Hull immediately recorded the song “A Better Way,” which appears as the final track. It is the only song to feature acoustic guitar, and serves as the anchor for which he and McDowell pulled musical motifs from for the rest of the score. Throughout, repeated “dahs” and “wahs” as well as droning, reverb-laden choruses and layers of various vocal noises define the soundtrack. Stars Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe even make[...]

Tonight: Manchester Orchestra

Town Ballroom has been positively on fire this year, and the momentum will continue tonight at the Manchester Orchestra show. Skip ahead real quick and watch the clip below: they’re playing one of their new songs, “Cope,” on Letterman, and they just go after it. They’re playing loud as hell in front of a dead studio audience; yes, they are still on national TV, but after watching this, you can’t help but get excited about tonight’s show. It’s just not possible. I first heard Manchester Orchestra’s “I’ve Got Friends” back in 2009 and it quickly became one of my favorite songs. I don’t normally “do” angst, but there was an underlying substance and grittiness about the band that I loved. Unfortunately, having just graduated from college and still carrying around a good bit of residual laziness, I didn’t bother following them any further. Then they released Simple Math in 2011 and[...]
