Tonight: The Tins w/ Applennium

The rebirth of Larkinville over the past five years has been a beautiful thing to witness. The once desolate business park in Larkin Square has become a hub for life and culture, and has even inspired the birth of further restaurants and bars in the area. Adding to the life in Larkinville is this summer’s Live in Larkin concert series which has showcased a plethora of local talent throughout the summer. That said, I’d be remiss if I didn’t stress just how special tonight’s showcase is, featuring two of Buffalo’s best acts in Applennium and the Tins. If you haven’t been lucky enough to hear Applennium, then you’ve missed out on perhaps the most intriguing bands in Buffalo. The band’s songs are rich with layers and harmonies, inventive but still completely melodic. Applennium is one of those groups that’s garnered a lot of local praise despite its limited live appearances,[...]

Tonight: Zak Ward

One of Buffalo’s newer summer music traditions, Larkinville’s Live at Larkin series, kicks off this evening down at the revitalized business neighborhood. Niagara Falls singer/songwriter and former Son of the Sun front man, Zak Ward, will be opening the night for long time Buffalo folk outfit, John & Mary & the Valkyries. John Lombardo, the “John” of John & Mary, is a founding member of 10,000 Maniacs, by the way, while “Mary,” that is Mary Ramsey, replaced Maniacs’ singer Natalie Merchant two decades ago. The more you know… Ward will be joined by fellow SOTS band mate and current Soft Love member, Jeremy Franklin, plus a backing band, and (hopefully) will be tackling tunes from his most recent release, the stellar, 2014 EP, That’s What You Get. Make sure to head right down to the Square as soon as you punch out this afternoon. Ward and Franklin kick the evening off[...]

Tonight: Alan Evan’s Playonbrother

Come check out some interstellar, funkalicious grooves as supplied by Playonbrother tonight at Larkinville, USA. In this melting pot of soul-steeped talent, band-leader (and Buffalo’s own) Alan Evans exhibits the visionary freedom to do more than lay down his traditionally explosive backdrop of drum work—though you can damn well bet he does. In the studio, he demonstrates a variety of instrumental talent, taking guitar, bass, and even mic in hand. He envisions, he records, he mixes, he produces. And perhaps most remarkably, he is able to bring his broad range of talents into the live arena under an umbrella of direction that successfully blends a fiery fusion of Scofield-inspired guitar licks (Danny Mayer) with whirling strokes of organ meanderings (Kris Yunker) as they tactfully improvise their way in and out of focus. It’s an electric wall of funk-rock clamor, one that screams a skill and style to easily separate itself[...]

Live at Larkin Announces Summer Lineup

If you have yet to head down to the new Larkin Square, now would appear to be a good time. The revitalized business district’s Food Truck Tuesdays kick off this evening, and just yesterday, the Live at Larkin series announced its summer lineup. Beginning June 18th and running every Wednesday until September 17th, the series once again touches on a wide range of local artists and genres, from folk and jam to party pop and soul. Some blog favs, including Aircraft, Forealists, and everyone’s favorite subtle ladies man, Lance Diamond (if you didn’t know he was Buffalo’s best entertainer, just wait for him to tell you), are a part of this year’s lineup. The series will kick off on June 18th at 5pm with Neville Francis. You can view the entire Live at Larkin lineup here.
