Makeout Tactics

Buffalo-based indie pop quintet Makeout Tactics has been making their name for themselves since emerging onto the scene in 2021. The band has an ability to switch directions and sounds based on who is taking lead, and combines into a Los Campesinos meets Say Anything megazord with their end product. The band dabbles in jangle-pop and indie rock and is quickly becoming a must-have name on bills with their live show performances.

Matches Laces

After more than a decade of writing and performing with indie rock band, The Tins, Mike Santillo is creatingmusic under a new moniker. Primarily a recording project, Matches Laces combines electronic and natural elements, including moody sci- synths, dark acoustic guitar, retro drum machines, eld recording samples and layered vocal harmonies to create a mix of somber and upbeat pop-leaning songs. In an interview with1120 Press, Santillo says, “everything I’m writing, I kind of write and record as I write. The songs kind of write themselves as I’m recording and adding layers. “These recorded layers have come together to form an 8 song EP. In the self-titled debut, Santillo explores heart break by examining past relationship dynamics, contemplates the nite nature of existence while re-solving to focus on the love there is in the moment, and tracks time just existing in mundanity, “sitting down by the water to pass the[...]

Addisyn Logan

Addisyn Logan has been another one of our post-COVID favorites. A mix between Clairo and Phoebe Bridgers, this singer/songwriter truly delivers with her iconic sad girl energy. If you’re going to break up with someone, double check that it’s not Addisyn Logan with an alias, because she will make a biting song about it… And worst of all, it will have a really pretty melody.

Spiria

Indie-pop duo Spiria has been blowing us away over the past couple years after we discovered them on Nickel City B-Sides. The band is a sibling act, performing fairly stripped down sets with a lineup of just keyboard and drums. Lead singer Mikayla Manke’s dreamy delivery is both enchanting and mesmerizing, so if you’re a fan of Regina Spektor or Laura Marling, then make sure you catch Spiria.

Marella – “Rock and Roll Phase”

The track created by San Jose California native Marella titled “Rock and Roll Phase” serves as the third track on the 13-track LP titled Posterboy. The song is a charming, indie pop song that beautifully encapsulates the journey of yearning for an unrequited love. With its whimsical melodies and heartfelt lyrics, the song takes listeners on a captivating adventure of self-discovery and discovering love. Marella opens the track with the line, “She’s in a haze, in her rock and roll phase,” seizing the thought of finding true love with a scene-adjacent individual. The bittersweet-yet-hopeful vocals tell a tale of searching through the vastness of Marella’s experiences, only to stumble upon that one elusive connection that changes everything.  The irresistible blend of shimmering guitars, ethereal synths, and pulsating beats creates a soundscape that mirrors the excitement and anticipation of a newfound romance. As the next line in the chorus after “in[...]

Paul Cherry (featuring Kate Bollinger)- “OBO”

Los Angeles, California native Paul Cherry brings an uplifting vibe on his latest single release “OBO” with a feature from fellow California native Kate Bollinger. The opening of this track gets your attention immediately by a couple of quick drums followed by Kate’s beautiful vocals. The instruments used in the beat makes you picture yourself on a beach surrounded by palm trees sipping on your favorite drink. One of my favorite elements of the track is the storytelling within; as soon as Paul starts singing, his first lyrics are, “Hey, thanks for your reply, let’s meet tonight.” The storytelling is executed perfectly, as you feel like you are eavesdropping on their conversation, but in reality, that’s exactly what they want the fans to think. The delivery of the track is done extremely well as it’s not only a lovey conversation, but also an uplifting buoyant vibe.  “OBO” is an enchanting[...]

Glass Animals – Zaba

It was just this past April that the promising Oxford-based quartet Glass Animals cemented themselves a tight little niche in the psychedelic indie-pop market with their beaming EP Gooey. Now they’ve returned with their debut album, Zaba, to prove that beyond the Radiohead reminiscent grooves or the minimalist pop production, they are in fact an inimitable, contemporary pop creation. It’s only fitting that they hit the mark right out of the gate even with a ton of pressure riding on this up-and-coming group’s premiere effort. Glass Animals’ sonically forecasting Gooey EP brought about one of the quartet’s most unrestrained singles in “Gooey,” again found on Zaba. Oozing basslines all on top of Dave Bayley’s smooth, sleek falsettos make it one of their most authentic feeling cuts to date. The track isn’t without its fair share of sexual innuendos as unorthodox uses of pet names get that across, especially when referencing Winnie the[...]
