Hooray For Earth at Sugar City (8/20/14)

Wednesday night, New York City’s Hooray For Earth returned to Buffalo after a four year absence for a special yet sparsely attended show at the newly reopened Sugar City art space on Niagara Street. I don’t know exactly what happened that contributed to a show for an up and coming band being attended by 15 people, but that’s basically what ended up happening. That those 15 people were treated to a magnificently loud and blisteringly gorgeous performance is almost beside the point; Hooray For Earth made good on their promise to get here after cancelling in January of 2013, and I want to thank Hooray For Earth and opener Grooms for making the trip. It was one of those shows where the bands start early so they can get on their way to the next stop, hopefully with a bigger crowd. Grooms, a power trio from Brooklyn, started before the[...]

Tonight: Hooray For Earth

Originating as an alias for the home recordings of multi-instrumental Noel Heroux, New York-based experimental rock band Hooray For Earth have released five studio albums since 2008. Their most recent LP, Racy, was released back in July on Dovecote Records and includes the blissfully experimental single, “Keys,” and features an atmospheric pop-rock sound. The latest single from the album, “Say Enough,” had its’ video premiere on Stereogum earlier today. The clip follows the band’s tradition of pairing their work with equally experimental visuals. Tonight, the band plays Buffalo all-ages venue Sugar City in support of Racy. Doors open at 7pm. Show starts at 8pm.

Hooray For Earth’s Noel Heroux

Upfront, I just have to tell you that I’ve been dying to see Hooray For Earth since Janauary of last year. A Johnny Come Lately to their 2011 debut, True Loves, after somebody on the blog (probably Mike Moretti) flagged them as a band to check out for their “M83 but weird” vibe, their show at the Ninth Ward was high on my list after 2012’s M83 blowout. Formed in 2005 as the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Noel Heroux, Hooray For Earth became a hit with music bloggers thanks to the incredibly solid True Loves, which earned the moniker “cult favorite” and marked the band as one to watch. Unfortunately, fate cruelly intervened to scotch the show. Fast forward to this July and the release of Hooray For Earth’s sophomore effort, Racy. Guitar driven and more in your face than its predecessor, Racy represents something of a departure for Heroux and Hooray[...]

Just Announced: Hooray for Earth

With Sugar City’s official grand opening weekend just around the corner on Friday, August 15th, the newly relocated DIY collective is wasting no time in locking in some great shows to lead another great Buffalo summer to its triumphant finish. On Wednesday, August 20th, the new Niagara Street home base will be hosting NYC pysch-tronic act, Hooray for Earth. The band will be on the road promoting their at-the-time newly released album, Racy, set to drop next Tuesday, July 29th. Keep an eye out for tickets prices in the very near future.

Hooray For Earth – “Keys”

New York psych-electronica band, Hooray For Earth, recently dropped a video for “Keys,” the first single off Racy, their upcoming follow up to 2011’s excellent , True Loves. Featuring crunchy guitar licks,  Wolverine’s motorcycle, and a bike ride through the woods (and warp space), the video, directed by Beau Burrows and Tucker Bliss, is stylish, evocative, and points to big things for Noel Heroux and company, who just announced dates for an August tour. No Buffalo date announced so far, but Hooray For Earth owe WNY a show, and hopes are high for the Fall. Stay tuned. Racy hits stores (and the Interwebs if you like your music in 0 and 1 form) July 29th.

Hooray For Earth – “Keys”

Yesterday, NYC’s Hooray For Earth released the first single from Racy, its highly anticipated follow up to 2011’s True Loves. Featuring crunchy guitars and a soaring ethos, “Keys” is ambitious, smart , pleasingly accessible, and one hell of a teaser for Racy, due out July 29th.
